Patience- Job

Job can be a rough book to read for a lot of reasons—its contrasting arguments, its unanswered questions. Then there's Job's ability to endure indescribable physical, emotional, and spiritual pain. His personal losses are compounded by his know-it-all (or "don't-know-it-all, " to be accurate) friends. An extended silence from God is a challenge to us as we try to make sense of our pain. Job sets what seems an impossible standard for suffering. Are we too supposed to just sit back and let life slaps us around?

One helpful reminder is that being patient doesn't mean being silent. In between his friends' philosophizing, Job defends himself more than that, on several occasions, Job lets God have it. For example, "Oh that I might have my request, and that God would fulfill my hope, that it would please God to crush me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!" (Job 6:8-9). Here Job cries out for God to just end his misery instead of letting him limp along in pain. Further on Job laments, "he will not let me get my breath, but fill me with bitterness. If it's a contest of strength, behold he is mighty! If it matters of justice, who can summon him?" (Job 9:18-19). In other words, Job is being beaten down by God, so who is he going to go to for help? It's not a happy prayer; in fact, it's one that indirectly accuses God of acting monstrous and arbitrary.

Job isn't the only person who prays like this. The various writers of the Psalms say some pretty dark things, directly to God. In Psalm 137:9 one of the Judeans exiled Babylon relishes the idea of killing Babylonian children. Yikes. The point here is that in times of trial it's helpful to know that we can direct our pain at God. He isn't intimidated, easily offended, or unable to understand. After all the pain of the universe was directed at Jesus, and even He cried out, "Why have you forsaken me?"

We can be honest with God, and while that doesn't alter physical circumstances, sometimes it helps us process our internal realities. You are not the only follower of God to know pain, and like others who cry out and endure, you will find redemption in His time.
