August 2024: Hungry Ghost Month

The Hungry Ghost Month is here again. For 2024, it started today, August 4th and then gradually closes until it reaches September 2nd. During this period, wandering spirits and hungry ghosts will roam freely, bringing bad luck, potential harm like conflicts, illness, and other misfortunes to the living.

In the month of the hungry ghost, people are advised to be extra cautious about negative energy, bad omens, and bad luck. It is recommended to be alert and extra vigilant, particularly during nighttime. Children and young adults are advised to stay indoors after dark and avoid wandering alone at night. If you must leave, pay close attention to your surroundings, and drive carefully to avoid accidents.

On the night of August 17 & 18 it is advised to make offerings by burning joss paper or incense and leaving food as gifts in the area just outside of your homes to appease nearby wandering spirits and to discourage them from bringing problems to your family. Make sure not to accidentally knock over any of the offerings made during the night of the full moon to avoid misfortune.

Ghost Month is considered an inauspicious time so postpone moving houses, new business ventures and any plans for renovations to avoid setbacks. There are high chances of accidents, illness, injuries, spirit possession or death so any nature trips like stargazing, camping, or hiking must be moved to a later date. Weddings are vulnerable to attacks from jealous female spirits who may cause mayhem and cast curses on the couple so rescheduling is a must.

At home focus on nurturing the yang energies by making sure all rooms are clean and well-lit. Hang a metal windchime up front or lucky feng shui bells on the main door to attract good fortune. Add tall and healthy live plants near the front door and all over the house to invite positive energy. Play relaxing music as often as you can, clean your aquarium or water fountain once a week to remove stagnant energy, and always keep your living space bright, happy, clean and clutter-free to maintain a positive environment. Display a faceted crystal ball on your window to attract and spread positive energy, tranquility, happiness and camaraderie. Light a candle at the altar and offer prayers to the dead and wandering souls. You may also burn sandalwood incense outside of your house every morning from 6am to 11am to appease all spirits that live inside, outside or near your home.

Wear bright colors when going out, or when lounging at home to increase the flow of positive energy. Cleanse, energize and program your crytals to protect you and your family.
