BUTUAN CITY - With growing popularity and importance of online buying nowadays amid the โnew normalโ where people are avoiding face to face interaction and visiting physical stores, consumers are reminded to take extra precaution in transacting online. While netizens enjoy the convenience and choice in online shopping platforms, fraud and abuses are prevalent. These include false advertising and sale of counterfeit goods as forms of deceptive sales practices.
Consumers must remain vigilant in buying through Facebook or social media sites. Like traditional markets, customers should keep in mind the principle of caveat emptor (buyer beware) in their online dealings. It is highly important to be wary of online fraud to avoid the arduous process and inconvenience of recovering losses. Many unscrupulous individuals continue to lurk around and delude innocent people who spend their hard-earned money on goods and services which do not meet their expectations.
Consumers should be careful on these online offers or advertise product packages that, in reality, feature items sold separately, or promote medical products that purportedly have healing benefit that โare rarely properly tested, no health benefits at all and can even be harmfulโ.
Other sites deceptively promote gadget of a particular standard, quality, style, or modelโ when the actual available item is a counterfeit or replica only. Some sellers offer fake discounts to make it sounds that a buyer saves a few pesos.
Watch out for sellers offering very low prices of product as compared to prevailing prices of retail stores. To make it appear they are legitimate, they tend to post business regulatory documents that are fictitious as documents are mere photo shopped or fabricated. These bogus sellers or scammers receive remittance money and then block their customers. They could no longer be contacted or located as address and other contact information about them were all fictitious.
Some say their products are new, but upon confirmation of the order, the supplier replaces the contents of the brand-new packaging with a refurbished or second hand model, reseals it, and then ships it to the unsuspecting customerโ. Other practices deliver or ship other than being ordered at a higher price collected upon delivery. While online sites have Cash on Delivery option there is still a risk that what is being ordered is not what is being delivered. Courier services demand payment first before opening the parcels. Hence, there are incidents that a product handed over is different from what is being ordered. Getting redress to demand for replacement or refund for a faulty or a wrong item takes an arduous process or sometimes no availment of remedies at all as tracing a bogus seller is very difficult. Only NBI, CIDG, PNP Cybercrime have the capability to go after online scammers /fraudsters.
For the protection of consumers, DTI advises consumers to buy from reputable online selling sites. It is important to secure feedback or testimonials from previous buyers to establish online sellersโ trustworthiness. Be prudent and do background checking of the seller before buying online.
And lastly, donโt believe everything you read or watch over product advertisements or offers through the internet. If it sounds too good to be true, it is probably FALSE. Think several times before you use the internet or click your computer before you buy online.
