FIVE LESSONS FROM SAINT MONICA
Saint Monica (AD 331-387) spent much of her life consumed with the afflictions and deviance of those closest to her but ultimately succeeded and saw both Patricius and Augustine baptized as Christians while converting many others in the process through her perseverance, prayer, patience, self-sacrifice, and courage.
1. PERSEVERANCE IN PRAYER
Monica, with a faith that was formed at an early age, gave her trust to the Lord through intercessory prayer for both her husband and her son.
2. PATIENCE AMIDST CONFLICT
Monica held her tongue during bouts with Patricius, his husband not because he was right but because responding when he was illogical would be of no use.
3. SELF-SACRIFICE
Monica was taught that making small sacrifices would ultimately help her achieve greater sacrifices.
4. EXPECTANT FAITH
Monica displayed a certainty that the promise of God’s love would not disappoint, even though it took a very long time for the results to take place.
5. SEEKING HELP FROM OTHERS
Monica sought the help of authorities and experienced men on the path of her son’s conversion.

We are strong if our goodbyes are done with, in, and for the Lord. “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid."

As Jesus was crucified between two thieves, we, too, in life can be crucified between the regrets of yesterday, and the worries of what may come. These "thieves" rob from us precious and meaningful moments of this beautiful time called today.
Indeed, let us live well, love much, and laugh often.
A MOMENT WITH THE LORD
Lord, help me to trust in You. Save me from useless worries, useless heartaches, and useless anxieties. Amen.
A MOMENT WITH THE WORD
"Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God your needs, and don't forget to thank Him for His answers." Philippians 4:6
A good reminder for all of us: Take the road of giving, and you will experience a life filled with joy and meaning.
MOMENTS by Fr Jerry Orbos, SVD
The story is told about a wife who called her senior citizen husband who was driving on the freeway, frantically saying: “Honey, I just heard on the news that there’s a car counter-flowing on the freeway! There was silence on the other end, and then, the husband said: “Gosh, Honey. There’s not just one car. There’s hundreds of them!”

In today’s Gospel (Lk. 3,1-6)) We hear about the appearance of John the Baptist in the region of Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, coming in with a message that counter-flows with the sinful and worldly situations at that time. He was prophet, a voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.”

Today is the Second Sunday of Advent. We light the candle of peace in the Advent wreath. We honor men and women who work for peace, and are persecuted for doing so like John the Baptist. We have modern day prophets who go out, take the risk, and go beyond their comfort zones to carry out their mission for God. May we all do our mission for our God, to become instruments of His peace and His love.

I have been doing some gardening during pandemic, and one of the lessons I learned is the preparation of the ground, the soil. The Latin word for soil is “humus”, hence, the word “humility”. Getting one’s hand dirtied, and to sweat on one’s brow is a humbling and a cleansing experience. Advent is the time for us to be humble to our God and to be humble to one another. And then, peace will come. The key to true peace is humility.

The Preface of the Mass of the Second Sunday of Advent reminds us to be “watchful in prayer, and exultant in His promise”. May we have moments of quiet prayer, and be filled with thanksgiving and praise. Advent is the time to count our blessings, and also the time to share our blessings.

Just when we thought that the night of Covid-19 is already over, the “omicron” variant comes out. Let us continue to be vigilant, and not lose heart. It is with the help of prayer that we can continue to be patient and persevere. Prayer, Patience, Perseverance. We need these virtues so much these days!

December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mama Mary gives us hope that it is possible to overcome sin and sinfulness. We all are sinners, but we all can change for the better. We are not hopeless and helpless as we journey towards goodness and authenticity. Mama Mary is the hope of us sinners. Let us follow her and take the road of humility.

Let us not give up our desire and efforts to become better persons, a better nation, and a better world. In moments of discouragement or desperation, sing the song “God will make a way, when there seems to be no way.” End it with the song, “In His time, He makes all things beautiful in His time”! Let us continue to believe, trust, and surrender (BTS!)

Together with the psalmist we pray: “Show me the path where I should walk o Lord; point out the right road for me to follow.” (Ps.25)

Sharing with you something I read: “God never sends you into a situation alone. He goes before you. He stands beside you. He walks behind you. Whatever situation you have right now, face it with
the confidence of knowing that God is with you.”
A Moment with the Lord:
Lord, teach us where to go, and when to flow, and when to counter-flow. Amen

Angels Explained: What You Should Know About the Nine Choirs In this Lighthouse Talk audio, Dr. Mark Miravalle, Professor of Theology and Mariology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, teaches on the fascinating subject of Angels. Why did God create angels? How are they different from humans? Are guardian angels found in Scripture? Discover the answer...
2nd October: Feast of the Guardian Angel
• According to Dr. Mark Miravalle, Theology Professor at Franciscan Univ. (Steubenville, Ohio), “there is an entire civilization of beings far more numerous, intelligent, and higher in the created order than we are waiting to help us.” Those beings are the angels of God.
• Angels may lack bodies, but that doesn’t mean they have no relation to matter. Those that passed their great test, before the creation of man, were entrusted by God with the governance of the universe in all its particulars.
• The 6th century theologian Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite explains that there are 9 choirs of angels – each choir has a specific job and is grouped into one of three hierarchies:
o First hierarchy – Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones – they do the work of praise and adoration to God
o Second hierarchy – Dominions, Virtues and Powers – they govern the universe, movements of planets, manage the seasons and battle demonic powers.
o Third hierarchy govern human events – Principalities (direct countries/continents), Archangels (guide nations) and Guardian Angels (protect individual human beings).
• The 9th choir of angels (Guardian Angels) is intimately involved in individual human affairs. They are exclusively assigned to each one of us, forever, to carry out their divine commission.
• Angels do not impose on us, and there is a catch – to fully intervene on our behalf, our angel needs our permission. Therefore we must pray to our guardian angel daily. You can also call upon the guardian angel of your children, spouse, friends, loved ones, etc. and ask for protection and help.
• How do you thank your angel for all his hard work? Dr. Miravalle recommends going to Eucharistic adoration.
• Dr. Scott Hahn, Catholic theologian and writer, explains, “In your angel, you have a best friend who is wealthier than Bill Gates, more powerful than the president, and more intelligent than Einstein...we need to remember the angels who’ve been waiting for ages for the opportunity to help us get home to God.”
Prayer to your Guardian Angel:
O my good Angel, whom God as appointed you to be my guardian, enlighten and protect, direct and govern me, you who have been entrusted by the Divine Mercy, Amen.
Happy Feast!!
