Each year, around one hundred million animals are bred and killed on intensive fur and animal skin farms to supply the fashion industry. Several crocodile farms have been exposed due to the agonizing deaths of animals to make exotic leather items (PETA Vietnam, 2016). It was discovered that "workers electroshocked crocodiles then cut their necks and thrust metal rods down their spines.” The neck incisions would have been very "painful and inhumane" as crocodiles remain conscious for over an hour after their spinal cord has been severed and their blood vessels cut.

In the Philippine context, the Crocodylus porosus and the Crocodylus mindorensis, both listed as CRITICALLY ENDANGERED animals, are bred and raised in captivity for their skin. Unfortunately, the government has promoted crocodile farming as the Philippines is the number one exporter of crocodile skin to luxurious international brands that produce leather bags, shoes, and fashion items.

More often than not, we hear stories of animals being wild and violent to humans. However, behind those narratives is a crueler world to animals.
