The last few weeks, we have had to pause our feeding operations in order to safeguard our nanay volunteers. This has left the children in our community more vulnerable to hunger and illness. This week, we will be conducting relief operations in order to give much needed hope and assistance to these families, especially those who have lost their jobs due to the recent ECQ. We would appreciate any help you can extend at this crucial time - when the need is great, and while the kids are at their last stretch of school. Please also spread the word to other generous hearts out there. Thank you!

Taking time to admire these women, who on top of their work and family duties, have carved out time on a Saturday morning to plan and scheme for ways to serve the children of their community

Your beeswax cloth wraps last for 6 months up to 1 year before they need to be refreshed. Refreshing is easily done with an oven and beeswax shavings. (We have refresh pouches for you). Plastic never actually decomposes. It just becomes smaller micro plastics that float in our water, clog our landfills, and leak toxins into our soil. Plastic may be convenient now, but there is a price to pay.

Let’s do our part in saving our environment. Choose to reuse! Choose to refuse plastic!

Kwentong Bayani #5: Mitchel Alegonza Gonzalgo, 36, Coordinator for Children’s Feeding Program

Even before the Covid19 Pandemic, Mitch had already found her calling serving others in her community; providing meals to 110 children during the week. She is an active member in Couples for Christ along with her husband. With the onset of the pandemic, Mitch and her husband suffered a drastic reduction in their income as work dried up; this has left them unable to meet their basic needs. Quarantine has taught Mitch to value the precious time she has with her family, be thankful for their health, and to be even more compassionate to her fellow man. Despite the dangers of volunteering; Mitch put her trust in the Lord to protect her and her husband who put his skills as a warehouseman to use to pack and distribute relief goods. It was their way of sacrificing for their community. Mitch hopes that their efforts inspire others to volunteer and seek opportunities within their own communities. The first thing Mitch wants to do after ECQ is to attend Mass with her family and give thanks and give glory to the Lord, followed by a family meal at Jolllbee which is the favourite of her 4 children.

**These times have brought such overwhelming challenges. But in the face of these great struggles and uncertainty, we also have witnessed overwhelming kindness, compassion and commitment to serve over and beyond the call of duty. We would like to share a few of the many heroes who have shined through in these unprecedented times. This is the first of the series of stories behind our quarantine heroes - the volunteer nanays of Love2Learn Center, Kaingin1, Bgy. Pansol, QC.

Kwentong Bayani #4: Arvie Bagual Quilang Navalta, 38, Community Volunteer

With the onset of ECQ Arvie has lost her regular income. This was a source of fear and anxiety, coupled with lack of reliable transportation, has lead to difficulty in getting her basic needs met. But despite her own personal struggles, Arvie found new purpose in volunteer work. Her resolve is strengthened when she sees families who are in are in even more dire circumstances. These families are faced with impossible choices such as having to nurse their infants with coffee from the free relief packets because they are unable to afford formula. Volunteering has given Arvie a purpose; even the smallest gestures of compassion are greeted with so much gratitude and joy, it brings a sense of peace and happiness within her heart. Arvie prays for a timely resolution to the pandemic, and is hopefully for what the future holds for her and her community. She looks forward to the day she can gather with her friends and neighbours, attend mass, and end the day with a festive boodle fight

Kwentong Bayani #3: Julie Quinones, 52, Coordinator for Children’s Feeding Program & Block Coordinator for Bedridden Ward

Prior to the onset of the pandemic, Julie was already filled with the spirit of volunteerism; during the week she would work at the Chidlren’s Feeding Program, alternating that with caring for for patients in the Bedridden Ward. On weekends she would continue her volunteer work acting as a greeter Mass at her church. As the ECQ has dragged on, Julies heart is broken seeing the growing number of families clamouring for support, at first the number was 25, then 75, then 90. One of the greatest learning experiences that Julie has had was how to remain patient and calm under pressure with her fellow community members, whose emotions run high when relief goods run out or when their names are not on the list. Julie draws strength from prayer, giving thanks to the Lord for her continued good health, and ability to help her community. The first place Julie wants to go after the pandemic passes is to celebrate Mass and give thanks to the Almighty, followed by lunch at Max’s or Gerry’s Grill, her family’s favourite restaurant.

Kwentong Bayani** #2: Analie Mercadal, 36

I asked Ann, what she had to say to those who want to volunteer. Her answer was simple and direct "Kelangan po na merong tiyaga at sakripisyo.” Despite her husband losing his job as an on-call driver for ABS-CBN, and having 2 children to care for, Ann chose to serve her community as a volunteer distributing relief goods. She saw the suffering and needs of her neighbours and felt compelled to act. Ann prays for the continued health and safety of her family, fellow volunteers, and neighbours. She finds peace and a lightness in her heart when she is on the front line helping. Ann is determined continue helping so long as she is able to and there is a need for help. She looks forward to the day her kids can return to school and she can celebrate mass with her family and friends and give thanks to God for shepherding them through this difficult time.

Kwentong Bayani #1: Bonita L Ewe, 38
Pre-covid19 Bonita’s entrepenural spirit and can-do attitude shone through as she ran a successful sari-sari store; along with her husbands income as a security guard and Grab driver, supported her family of 5. She looks back fondly on the times she and her family would go out and bond; it was a very different existence to the new reality she faces. She, like many of us is filled with fear, apprehension, a longing to return to normalcy. Inspite of these concerns, Bonita heeded the call to service; recognizing the need to sacrifice, especially for the helpless children, who give her the courage and strength to go on; seeing how she was able to touch their lives gave her a sense of completeness and belonging. Bonita looks forward to the day she can go the Mass and give thanks to the Lord, and help the children return to school and continue their education.
