219th ADPhils Toastmasters Club Meeting
Toastmaster of the Day: Toastmaster Reylahn Galler
Theme: “Voice of Resilience: Words that Save Lives”
Special Observance: National Disaster Preparedness Month (July)
The Philippines is renowned globally for its resilience in the face of calamities. This theme highlighted the significance of resilience and effective communication during crises.
TM Reylahn shared sobering statistics that underscore our country's vulnerability and resilience. A significance number of 20:
20 typhoons annually
20 earthquakes daily
20 active volcanoes
TM Reylahn also discussed the profound impact of disasters on lives, how they challenge our resilience, and the importance of preparedness. For instance, Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded, struck the Philippines in November 2013, causing catastrophic damage, particularly in the Visayas region. Poor communication before and after the calamity exacerbated the impact.
Key Takeaways:
Improve communication strategies
Enhance disaster preparedness
Foster resilience through planning and learning from past mistakes
General Evaluator: TM Allan Uy
TM Allan introduced his TAG Team and highlighted the importance of their roles:
Timer: Immediate Past Area Director Mercy Meriales
Ah Counter: Sergeant at Arms Toastmaster Arvie Vidal
Grammarian: Secretary Toastmaster Alecx Latina-Isla, who introduced the Word of the Day: “surmount,” meaning 1) to overcome a difficulty or obstacle, and 2) to stand or be placed on top of.
Table Topics:
Led by Toastmaster Ken Salve, this session featured the “Pecha-Kucha” format, where speakers had to give a continuous speech connecting eight images, each shown for 15 seconds, for a total of 2 minutes.
Birthday Celebrant: Distinguish Toastmaster Berns, the founding father of ADPhils Toastmasters Club, gave a polished impromptu speech. He creatively linked one image (the contact between two index fingers) to Michelangelo’s painting The Creation of Adam, symbolizing mankind's technological achievements.
President of ADPhils Toastmasters Club Toastmaster Ara: Delivered a humorous impromptu speech, starting with a shell containing a pearl, followed by images of a turtle, canned sardines, and pearl jewelry. Her unexpected and engaging narrative captivated the audience.
Toastmaster Nicko: A first-time guest, spoke about how our connected society races against time and how, despite time's pressures, we should continue to enjoy and move forward. His speech was both reflective and inspiring.
Toastmaster Kevin: Also a guest, discussed how nature provides for us and what happens when it is damaged, emphasizing that life always finds a way to recover.
Evaluations for Table Topics:
Immediate Past President TM Lite evaluated President Ara, Vice President for Membership TM Arcef evaluated TM Nicko, and Vice President for Public Relations TM Andeng evaluated Toastmaster Kevin.
Evaluations for Toastmaster of the Day and Prepared Speeches:
VPM Arcef evaluated the Toastmaster of the day TM Reylahn, VPPR Andeng evaluated Vice President for Education- TM Ivy Dianne Tolero’s prepared speech “How Penny Made Me Wise”, IPP Lite evaluated TM Kim Libarnes’s prepared speech “Let’s Settle This!”, and DTM Berns evaluated President Ara Gumangan’s prepared speech “1,2,3.. Let’s Go!”
Evaluations are crucial for improving speaking skills, focusing on both strengths and areas for growth.
TAG Team Report:
Timers Report:
IPAD Mercy Meriales congratulated the team for an efficiently run meeting, noting that the session was ahead of schedule. She emphasized the importance of time management in ensuring smooth and timely meetings.
Ah Counter Report:
TM Arvie Vidal reported that the most frequently used filler words were "ah" and "uhm." He highlighted the importance of the power of pause—taking brief silent pauses to gather thoughts, which can help avoid the use of filler words.
Grammarian Report:
TM Alecx Latina-Isla congratulated DTM Berns and TM Andeng for effectively using the Word of the Day, "surmount." She also noted some exemplary uses of the English language by fellow Toastmasters. TM Alecx suggested replacing vague terms like "really hard" with more precise words such as "complicated," "difficult," or "exhausting." She encouraged everyone to continue expanding their vocabulary to enhance clarity and cohesion in their communication. She concluded with an inspiring note: "Together, let's surmount our obstacles."
General Evaluator TM Allan Uy commenced his evaluation by highlighting the relevance of the theme chosen by TM Reylahn. He praised how "Voice of Resilience: Words that Save Lives" effectively addressed current events and issues.
Evaluation Highlights:

Table Topics Evaluation: TM Allan gave special recognition to TM Ken Salve for his inventive approach to the Pecha Kucha format. He praised TM Ken for the creative challenge that encouraged participants to speak coherently while connecting a series of images.
General Evaluations: TM Allan appreciated the structure of the evaluations, noting that they began with commendations before moving on to recommendations. He highlighted the effectiveness of pointing out specific areas for improvement and providing concrete examples to help speakers refine their skills.

Introduction of New Division Director
Division Advisor, DTM Nomel I. Gilongos, introduced our new Division Director with a memorable description. He highlighted that behind her sweet and caring demeanor lies a profound seriousness regarding leadership success. He described her as the embodiment of a true Toastmaster, committed to excellence and dedicated to our shared goals.
Inaugural Speech
Division K Director TM Sheryl Lantican is a registered dentist by profession, with a strong advocacy for providing quality dental care to all Filipinos, especially those in marginalized sectors. She recognized the need to improve her communication skills to advance this cause. Fortunately, DTM Trixie Esguerra introduced her to the Toastmasters Organization, which helped her become an eloquent speaker. Sheryl knew in her heart that she had already found her “why” in this journey. That’s why, when offered the opportunity to lead Division K, she accepted.
Initially, she had some doubts, but these were dispelled when she met Toastmaster leaders in Cebu. Through meaningful conversations, she realized that effective leadership doesn’t require high-level skills but rather a genuine heart for service. With this understanding, she felt confident that the support of the organization would follow. She also shared that what truly matters is not the titles she holds but how she can serve others and contribute to the best of her ability. What she can offer is her TIME. She has Talent, willing to Interact with anyone, can Motivate her fellow members and will be fully Engaged. She challenged everyone to do the same.
T –Talent: Are willing to share your Talent?
I – Interaction: Are you willing to interact to fellow members and be more Interactive?
M- Motivation: Are you willing to motivate your fellow Toastmasters?
E- Engagement: Are you will to be fully Engaged not only on activities within your club but also to Division Activities?
Are you also willing to give your TIME to Division K?

DTM Cruz shared a personal anecdote from DISCON 2019 in Cebu, where DTM Chiongbian assisted him with a registration issue. This act of kindness reinforced the belief that "titles and ranks are limited, but the way you treat people will always be remembered."
Keynote Address
DTM Josef Chiongbian delivered a straightforward yet impactful keynote address with the message: “Work Hard, Play Hard, and Avoid All the Drama.”
The ceremonial toast 🥂was led by the new Division Club Growth Director, TM Francis Carlo. The event concluded with closing remarks from DTM Luisa Joren.

Start Strong: Ready Set Go! (The Analogy of a Runner)
The Toastmaster of the Day, Immediate Past President of ADPhils Toastmasters Club TM Aireen “Lite” Guarin shared the “Analogy of a Runner”.
At the start of the race, the leader says, “ready, set and go!”. It is vital Be Ready and to Set our Goals. Ask yourself, “What do I want to achieve at the end of the race?”
Sustain –is difficult, along the way you will encounter challenges. Project load, overwhelming activities, deadlines. Reminding us to always go back on your why’s? Set your goals according to your facing and Being gentle to Oneself.
Finish Strong- TM Lite reminisce TM Alecx’s speech saying, “be consistent and when you are near at the finish line you must hurry to end it.”
Which kept the fire burning as the Club members aim to finish their goal on time in achieving 37 Educational Awards, 4 Pathway Completers, 10 Triple Crown Awardees and being 3rd Place at the International Speech Area Contest! 🏆
TM Arcef the newly elected Vice President for Membership as our very entertaining Table Topics Master, showed us some famous quotes with 3 remarkable leaders in history.
TM Andeng volunteered to be the first Table Topics Speaker shared to us that taking the first step can be one of the hardest but eventually she herself and the others can see her progress so Trust the Process.
The second Table topics Speaker is TM Ken sharing to us that we do not know what can happen in the future but what we can do is what’s happening now.
Lastly, TM Rayniel one of our brave guest raised his hand. The quote was, “Success is not final, failure is fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” -Winston Churchill. TM Rayniel leave us a message that You should not listen to your inner saboteur. You should invest in the future that you want. And he even used the word of the day “robust”.
The meeting ended with a wrap from TMOD Lite in one of DTM Christine Tamboique speech- "Make excellence a habit".
We Started this year Strong and We will go stronger! 💪
