Pinoy NASA Scientist Dr. Josefino C. Comiso Highlights His Journey to Becoming an International Scientist at ISPRS TC V Midterm Symposium

At the ISPRS TC V Midterm Symposium held from August 6-8 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, Manila, key figures from the scientific community gathered to discuss cutting-edge research. Among them was Dr. Josefino C. Comiso.

Dr. Comiso, a prominent speaker at the event, shared his extensive experience as an international scientist, emphasizing his significant contributions to climate research, particularly in Arctic sea ice dynamics and ocean carbon research. His influential papers, including "Climate Trends in the Arctic: 1979-2008" and "Satellite-Derived Trends in Sea Ice Extent and Concentration," have earned him 44,200 citations on Google Scholar and an impressive h-index of 85. His ScholarGPS rankings further reflect his prominence, placing him in the top 0.04% in All Sciences and top 0.01% in Satellite.

Additionally, Dr. Comiso has played a vital role as a Coordinating Lead Author of the IPCC 2014 report and a Contributing Author for the IPCC 2007 report, which was awarded the Nobel Prize. He has been honored with NASA's Exceptional Achievement in Science Medal and holds the position of Senior Scientist Emeritus at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

Dr. Comiso’s talk at the symposium also highlighted advances in remote sensing and photogrammetry, technologies that are crucial for enhancing our monitoring and understanding of climate change impacts.

ISAT U Space Society (ISS) Gains Cutting-Edge Insights at International Symposium on Geospatial Technologies

The International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Technical Comission V held a midterm symposium on education and outreach hosted by the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, Manila, Philippines, from August 6-8, 2024. The symposium, themed "Insight to Foresight via Geospatial Technologies," aimed to promote knowledge exchange and capacity building in geospatial technology.

The event attracted leading experts in photogrammetry and remote sensing. The ISAT U delegation, consisting of Dave Gumarang and Carlos Jose Rivera from the ISAT U Space Society, Rosanna Dureza, Rosanna Dureza, Head of the Environmental & Climate Change Unit-SSEDMMO, and Ernest Andreigh Centina, Chair of the BS Computer Science Program, actively participated in technical parallel sessions and plenary discussions.

The symposium focused on advancing teaching methods, fostering collaboration among scientists, and enhancing the use of geospatial data. Key outcomes included the strengthening of international research networks and the sharing of best practices in geospatial technology applications.

The event also set the stage for networking, with potential future collaborations aimed at leveraging geospatial technologies for climate change adaptation and disaster risk management. The insights gained from the symposium are expected to contribute to the development of new educational approaches and practical solutions in the field.

Overall, the symposium highlighted the significance of geospatial technologies in addressing global challenges and provided valuable opportunities for professional growth and networking within the international geospatial community.

It has been five (5) years since Republic Act No. 11363 or the Philippine Space Act was signed into law, establishing the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA).

Today also marks the start of , declared by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. through Proclamation No. 302, s. 2023. This annual event promotes space awareness, honors Filipino contributions to space science, and highlights the benefits of space technology for Filipinos.

Since then, PhilSA has been utilizing , which refers to the collective resources and capabilities of our country in space science and technology applications (SSTA) through people, institutions, policies, environment, and infrastructure. These efforts enable innovations and opportunities in the global space economy for the sustained progress and prosperity of the Philippines.

In the journey towards a Filipino nation bridged, uplifted, and empowered through the peaceful uses of outer space, we thank everyone who is a part of our mission to promote and sustain a robust space ecosystem. Let us continue to create value in space through our for and from Filipinos, and for the world. ✨
