Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok, play a vital role in the dissemination of information. It has changed the way we communicate, do business, get our daily news fix and so much more. The most obvious pros of using social networks are the ability to instantly connect with people, know real-time news and information discovery, great opportunities for business owners, and for general fun and enjoyment. However, it is no secret that there's also a dark side in using social media platforms. There is the rise of misinformation and fake news. The freedom to post any content given to social media users, paired with the lack of accountability from social media platforms enabled the proliferation of fake news. Samantha May B. Diasnes of Barangay PHHC Block 17, Mandurriao responsibly uses social media platforms and would like to stop or discredit fake news peddlers.
“Ako si Samantha May B. Diasnes, sang Barangay PHHC Block 17. Isa ka grade 9 student sang Mandurriao National High School bilang isa ka modular student naka bulig sa amon pag tuon ang social media ukon facebook when it comes to current events kag daily news, isa pa gid sa gina gamit namon amo ang google tungod dako ang bulig sini sa anon nga naga take sang modular class tungod my mga oras man nga nabudlayan kami sa amon subject tungod wala kami sang discussion dako kaayo ang adjustment when it comes sa self learning so naga search kami sa google para ma klaruhan kami sa mga subject namon nga need sang explanation. Dako man ang bulig sang messenger tungod dira namon mabasa ang tanan nga updates sang amon nga adviser kag subject teachers . Madamo gid nga salamat.”

We must always remember that social media is a powerful tool since its strong influence in the country can shape society’s opinion on any individual or issue. We all must learn how to responsibly exercise our freedom to post content on our respective platforms, in accordance with the right to free speech, and of expression. We encourage everyone to report or flag posts that are considered false or misleading and we must always put in mind to think before we click.
THE CALL FOR LIGTAS BALIK-ESKWELA! 📣📚
COVID-19 pandemic has brought many challenges and one of which is the access to inclusive and quality education. With the inevitable shift to online and modular classes, both have their own share of advantages and disadvantages. Students had to face an overwhelming increase in academic workload, internet connectivity issues, and lack of physical interaction with peers. This has brought a bigger question of what the goal of our education really is: for learning or for mere compliance?
This is why the call for “LIGTAS BALIK-ESKWELA” is at a height. This is an inclusive campaign that considers the welfare of students, teachers, and school staff by encouraging long-term, sustainable plans of action for education. In the simplest term, this pushes for a safe return to school despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Raisene Drake Demegillo of Barangay PHHC Block 17, Mandurriao is one of those who wishes for face-to-face classes to resume.
“Ako si Raisene Drake Demegillo, from Barangay PHHC Block 17. Tama gid kabudlay ang online classes para sa akon kay tungod nadala sang pandemic sa aton Ciudad kag bilog nga kalibutan. As a incoming grade 11 student we need get vaccinated for the safety of everyone. Now that this coming new school year we are all excited na mag ka face to face na. Hope that everyone will be safe. Thank you and Godbless!”
-Raisene Drake Demegillo
Learning should not be equated to the number of tasks submitted on time, rather, it should mold students to reflect on the world around them, to go beyond their echo chambers, and challenge what they already know. Education will always be a right rather than a privilege.
