On Friday, August 16, 2024, the WVSU-College of Dentistry held an orientation at the College of Dentistry Building for 4th-year students. The Orientation to Clinical Dentistry & Pre-Clinical Skills Exercises was designed to provide an in-depth overview of the pre-clinical courses that students will be taking in the academic year 2024-2025.
This event, a tradition since 2021, aimed to prepare students for their upcoming pre-clinical courses through lectures and hands-on demonstrations. According to Dr. Liza Assumpta Jover, the College Dean, this orientation began with the pioneer batch when they first started taking pre-clinical courses.
Esteemed guest lecturers Dr. Patrick Jerry Dizon and Dr. Paulett Marie Pamonag led the sessions. Dr. Dizon focused on removable partial dentures, while Dr. Pamonag covered complete dentures. Their lectures and demonstrations provided valuable insights, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
The event was an essential preparatory step for the students, laying the foundation for their upcoming clinical courses.

COD's Pagyuhum highlights college's history, feats in maiden issue
The Pagyuhum Publication of West Visayas State University College of Dentistry launched its first-ever print issue during the University Freshmen Orientation yesterday, August 16.
Despite taking three years in the making due to problems in organizing the publication and being short-staffed brought about by the neophyte college's small population, the broadsheet showcases articles about the college's biggest achievementsโfrom its establishment to its partnership with local and international institutions for simulation-based dental education.
In an exclusive interview about the COD's development, College Dean Dr. Liza Assumpta Jover emphasized the importance of "serving areas deprived of dental services," to future graduates of the program for having their school fees paid by the taxpayers.
Additionally, the issue explores deep into dental medicine topics such as proper hygiene and malpractice, meanwhile tackling the controversial budget cut faced by the university last academic year.
Lastly, the publication introduced its new mascot, Habbit, and models, Ivory and Damon, who will grace its future online and print issues' entertainment section.
Headed by Dr. Ma. Rosvia B. Bagaforo and College Dean Dr. Liza Assumpta M. Jover, the editorial board of Pagyuhum during its first issue is as follows:

In a media conference earlier this morning, the West Visayas State University-Little Theater Teatro Dagami unveiled some ideas about 'Maria Labo: The Missing Chapters,' their upcoming play on March 21, 2024, at WVSU Cultural Center. This event marks the first time in history that the famous urban legend from Panay will be brought to the theater stage.
Maria Labo, a legendary figure known for provoking horror in the Visayas region, was once only a proposed thesis topic of some of the organizationโs members but has now been turned into a minor production. This play explores the historical and cultural significance of Maria Labo's narrative, shedding light on the struggles faced by women in today's society and the social injustices they endure within a misogynistic and patriarchal environment. To add, the retelling of Maria Labo's story aims not only to entertain but also to promote the richness of Filipino folklore literature. Thus, it has been a challenge to the directors and production managers to conduct extensive research and resource mobilization to ensure the authenticity and effectiveness of the narrative.
The journey to bring Maria Labo to the stage is fraught with challenges. โBalancing academic or work responsibilities and theater work really posed a significant challenge for the team because the members belong to different colleges and some of us already have jobs, but our passion for theater drives us forward,โ said by Jingkie Pendronio, one of the directors and playwrights of the play.
The team also emphasized how crucial the process of bringing the story in to a theater play just by using the elements of theaterโ dancing, singing, lighting, sound effects, etc.โ which is way different from the film adaptation of Maria Labo. Nonetheless, they ensure that no stone is left unturned, and every ticket spent will be worth it because it is their tradition to always deliver their best, living up to their motto: โKabalan pero kabaloโ.
From folklore richness to women's rights advocacy, the portrayal of Maria Labo transcends mere entertainment, aiming to provoke thought and awareness among its audience.
