Something to try!

Ano ang Occupational Therapy?

2. Batay sa definition ng World Federation of Occupational Therapy, promotion ng health throughout occupation—-anu ba yung occupation? Yan yung ginagawa naten throughout our lifespan:

- kids - occupation nyan, maglaro, mag aral
- adolescents (teenagers)- mag aral, may kasamang leisure
- adulthood - magtrabaho, at may kasamang leisure
- Geria (old) - leisure

3. Sa case ng mga students naten, usually childhood (kids) and adolescents (teens) — kapag hindi magampanan ang paglalaro at pag aaral appropriately (dahil sa mga sumusunod but not limited to tantrums, BEHAVIORS, meltdowns, eye contact, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, cognitive skills, language skills, sensory issues, retained reflexes, social skills, etc.), isa sa mga nirerekomenda ng Devped ay OT para magawan ng plans tulad ng treatment, management, modification, solution, adaptation, support, accommodations, etc..

Holistic and flexible ang OT.

Big movements come first! This is because strong core and upper body muscles are the building blocks for good hand control. Before a child can use their hands well (fine motor skills), they need to develop:

Postural control: This means being able to hold their body steady in different positions, like sitting upright.
Forearm rotation: This allows them to turn their hands over for tasks like grasping a cup.
Strength and stability: This applies to the shoulders, elbows, and wrists for controlled hand movement.
Thumb separation: This lets them use their thumb and fingers independently for more precise tasks.

These skills develop in a specific order, with gross motor skills like rolling and standing coming first. Playground activities like climbing and swinging help build this foundation for future fine motor skills like writing. The weather is nicer so go outside and play on the playground, the perfect place to developing those gross motor skills.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY💜

22/04/2024

"There is research telling us that more hours per day spent on screens is linked to lower psychological well-being, in a way that presents in executive functioning skills as well as social/emotional development. Connections between lower self control, more distractibility, less emotional stability, difficulty making friends, and inability to finish tasks are all depicted.

There is research telling us that increased time spent with digital media in teenagers associated with higher odds of symptoms of ADHD. This may show up as some of they symptoms of too much screen time.

There are reports of increased mental health concerns and mental well-being. There are findings on the overall functioning of the brain that looks like distractibility, frustration, moodiness, and irritability.

You may have heard of the blue light emitted by personal electronic devices. Because children’s eyes absorb less short-wavelength light, more blue light reaches a child’s retina. Children, therefore, may be at higher risk for blue light retinal damage than adults. Blue light emitted from smartphones, tablets, and personal computers before bedtime can delay sleep onset, degrade sleep quality and impair alertness the following day. Limiting those devices before bedtime not only address sleep issues, but can help with overall wellness.

Our teenagers are impacted as well. Hours spent on screens leads to less sleep adequacy, which impacts learning, well-being, and development. Less adequate sleep impacts learning and cognitive skill-building. This occurs right during the age that social-emotional skills develop, executive functioning skill development is occurring, and communication skills are set to develop.

There have been studies completed that show increased depression symptoms, su***de-related outcomes, and su***de rates coinciding with screen use levels.

There is research revealing that brain scans of children who spend more than 7 hours per day on screens show premature cortical thinning of the brain. This is especially significant for our young children who often times, hold phones right up to their face, in a slouched position...."

And so much more! Read more about this research here: https://www.theottoolbox.com/research-on-screen-time-for-kids/

Self-regulation...
💡 "Self" means you or me. "Regulation" means the process of being in control or having management. So, add these two terms together, and you get "self-regulation."

Self-regulation means you or me being in control and having management of ourselves. 🚀

It's a skill that many children find challenging to learn without help. In a day, both kids and adults encounter situations requiring self-awareness, consideration of others, and the ability to exercise self-control. 🌟

Self-regulation involves attaining, maintaining, and changing one’s arousal level, emotions, and behaviors. This skill relies on impulse control, working memory, and, overall, the ability to keep oneself "in check." Making decisions based on feelings and desires requires motivation, willpower, and higher-level thinking. 🧠✨

Be careful where you get your information.

Many, many organisations and professionals are still pedalling a thoroughly harmful narrative about Autism and neurodivergence.

There are plenty of possible reasons:

Because it’s profitable.
Because it suits them to maintain neuronormative superiority.
Because ableism is alive and well.
Because unlearning is hard and people don’t like to admit they are wrong.

For the right info, it’s important to listen to neurodivergent voices.

There are plenty of Autistic professionals doing really great work in this space. Tag your favourite Autistic accounts below.

Who can help me rock this boat?

Philippians 4:6,7
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Heavy work is activity that requires effort from our muscles and these tasks usually involve activation of the muscles and joints of the body through the proprioceptive system by movements such as pushing, pulling or lifting. The movement activities create resistance input to the muscles and this feedback is ultimately what calms and regulates the sensory system.

The sensory system that is activated during heavy work activities is called the proprioceptive system. The proprioceptive system receives messages when the muscles move to do work. These messages flow back and forth to the brain. The brain decides how much force a muscle should use based on the task at hand.
