10 MONEY LESSONS I WISH I KNEW WHEN I WAS 20

1. Do not buy things with money that you do not have.

Just because you have a credit card or you have a dependable friend you can borrow money from, you are free to purchase things that you do not really need without impunity. Paying for something in the future just because you do not have money to pay for it at present is not financial freedom. It is slavery. The rule of thumb is, if you cannot pay for an item 10x more with the money that you have at that time, it means you cannot afford it. To resort to debt just to have it is something only a low value person would do.

2. Avoid becoming a victim of lifestyle inflation.

True story, I know someone who I will call Shala. When she was an entry-level employee, her go-to daily caffeine fix is the cheap coffee from 7-Eleven. When she was promoted to a managerial position, her coffee option has upgraded to that of Starbucks. So are her choices of clothes and gadgets which are all luxury brands. From a 5K per month apartment, she transferred to a posh condo unit. But despite having a high-earning job, she is always in debt. Do not be like Shala. Earning more is not tantamount to spending more.

3. Never indulge in a scarcity mindset.

Many are guilty of this as made evident by the petsa de peligro memes and posts that are rampantly circulating on social media as if being short of cash is something to rave about. One should not constantly harbor the thought of lacking money. It attracts negativity. The point is, you will never have more money if you think you always lack money.

4. Do not be financially stupid.

When you are not checking your expenses. When you do not care about your savings. When you do not know how your credit card works. When you are living paycheck to paycheck but are not thinking of increasing your earning capability. These are the traits of a financially stupid person.

5. Do not buy a car unless you really need it.

When a person starts making money, the first thing in his or her mind is to buy a car. Admittedly, I was guilty of this. When I made my first million, I had initially entertained the idea of purchasing a personal vehicle. Thankfully, I shrugged it off and opted to wait until I have more than enough. We live in a country where there are many ways to get from one place to another. Unless you really need a car or you have millions in your bank account, I advise you not get one. It is a fact. Most people who are not well-off struggle financially after getting a car.

6. Follow these three utang commandments.

First, do not lend money to someone who you barely know. Second, when lending money, treat it the same as giving to charity. That is why it is important to only allot an amount you are willing to let go of. In case you do not get paid back, it would not take a toll on you that much. Third, do not make a business out of lending money. Read Exodus 22:25-27.

7. Invest in your health.

Many take their health for granted. They live a sendentary lifestyle, spending hours on social media and on Netflix. They eat from fastfood and consume processed food and drinks high in sugar. They smoke or v**e. Use money for the betterment of your well-being. Go get those running shoes from Nike. Go visit your doctor regularly. Go eat nutritious food by incorporating more fruits and veggies into your diet. Money spent on these are money not wasted.

8. Spend more on books.

Instead of other material things, you should spend money more on books. They are almost always worth spending for. Reading aids you in developing a new mindset and perspective, which changes how you see things, eventually changing your life. By investing in books, you increase your value as person.

9. Surround yourself with the right people.

When you have friends who go on a gimmick or a drinking spree every weekend and you are not allowed to say no to them, it is just right to veer away from them. Connect with people who are substantial and do not engage in surface-level topics. Those who have aspirations and goals and with a sense of purpose. Those who will make you grow personally and financially.

10. Do not base your self-worth on material possessions.

The best example perhaps on this is owning the latest iPhone. I guess there is an inherent need among humans to feel rich and look rich. No one can deny that the iPhone is a status symbol. It is the phone of choice among politicians, celebrities, athletes and the wealthy. For a common person, the iPhone is the most affordable item he or she can procure to be on the same level with the aforementioned people. Do not allow consumerism to solely boost your self-esteem, only to find yourself broke in the end. Instead, work on your internal values and let them be the basis of your self-worth
