𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗡𝗦

There are four primary types of coffee beans: A̲r̲a̲b̲i̲c̲a̲, R̲o̲b̲u̲s̲t̲a̲, L̲i̲b̲e̲r̲i̲c̲a̲, and E̲x̲c̲e̲l̲s̲a̲.

𝘼𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙘𝙖 is the most common type of coffee beans. It accounts for over 60% of the world’s coffee production. Arabica beans are grown at high altitudes, in areas that receive steady rainfall and have a plentiful amount of shade. Arabica coffee has floral, fruity, citrus, earthy, buttery, chocolate, caramel, honey, or sugar notes, depending on origin. In the Philippines, Arabica is grown in Benguet, Kalinga, Cotabato, Davao, and Sagada.

𝙍𝙤𝙗𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖 is the second most produced type of coffee beans in the world. Robusta originated in central and western sub-Saharan Africa and thrives on lowlands like Cavite, Bulacan, and Mindoro. It has almost double the amount of caffeine, giving it a sharper flavor and a burnt or woody aftertaste. However, Robusta has more antioxidants and has a lower acidity compared to other coffees.

𝙇𝙞𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖, also known as barako locally, is a coffee bean that produces a distinctively robust and powerful cup. Liberica beans are larger than the others, often asymmetrical, and they’re the only coffee bean in the world that has such an irregular shape. The beans are said to have a unique aroma, consisting of floral and fruity notes, with a full body that possesses a smoky taste. Many who’ve tried the coffee liken the aroma to fruit and flowers and describe the flavor as having a somewhat “woody” taste.

𝙀𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙖 is technically a member of the Liberica family, but its species is actually incredibly distinct. Excelsa grows mostly in Southeast Asia and accounts for a mere 7% of the world’s coffee circulation. It is largely used in blends in order to give the coffee an extra boost of flavor and complexity. Excelsa is said to possess a tart and fruity body—which are flavors reminiscent of a light roast—that also somehow has dark, roasty notes.

Wondering what’s the difference between cold brew coffee and iced coffee?

Cold brew is not the same drink as iced coffee. Iced coffee is simply regular coffee that’s served over ice, either mixed with milk or left plain.


Cold brew is made from coffee beans that have been steeped in cold water for 12 to 24 hours, rather like you would when using an oversized tea bag, but using coffee. It’s time, rather than heat that extracts the flavor, caffeine, and sugars from the coffee beans. The steeping process is more sympathetic to the coffee bean, so you don’t end up with the bitter flavor that roasting can produce.
