Set midst the Evacuation Center in Pambujan, Northern Samar, the grounds reverberated on the 5th of March as the EVRAA qualifying battles unfurled in a stunning display of nerve and skill.
The Elementary Boys group saw an electrifying faceยญoff between Robert Ivan D. Calvadores from Unit IV and Jenice Ruben A. Torres representing Unit III.

Steered by the DM No. 069, s. 2024, the 5-day conduct of the Northern Samar Provincial Athletic Association (NSPAA) Meet 2024 brought together a couple of thousand hopeful athletes in the province. This year's NSPAA Meet breaks the constancy and brings forth several innovative transformations, displaying the commitment to advancement in the realm of athletics within the division/province.
Femi D. Adarayan, Northern Samar Federated Teachers President and member of the Provincial School Board (PSB), affirmed that a three-year Sports Development Plan as roadmaps for all sports-related activities was crafted by Mr. Omar O. Ty, NS-Division Sports Officer and was subsequently approved by the PSB. This is certainly a testament to the proactive approach of partnership between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the provincial government, and the remarkable leadership of Governor Edwin M. Ongchuan and Dr. Gaudencio C. Aljibe, Schools Division Superintendent. This well-structured plan in place guarantees that the sports events and initiatives align with the vision and goals and enhance the quality of the sports activities in the province.
The provincial board convened through DM no. 38, s.2024, at Kamagsangkay Sports Complex, Pambujan, Northern Samar, to discuss the necessary preparations. The notable high turn-out of attendance of the local officials involved was a testimony of support and collaboration in which subsequent planning for the big event surfaced. A bigger budget was allocated this year as the Provincial government puts premium on sports development despite the meager budget that the province generated. Such remarkable collaboration and unity between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the provincial government was highlighted in the speech delivered by the Local Chief Executive of the host municipality, Mayor Felipe A. Sosing, during the NSPAA Meet 2024 Opening Ceremony.

The battleground of the mind clashes head-on with the realm of the body. "A sound mind in a sound body" will once again echo through the sporting venues for this yearโs Northern Samar Provincial Athletic Association (NSPAA) Meet like a rallying cry akin to coaches injecting it into their athletes like a shot of adrenaline. But for the general spectators, what's at stake?
In sports, it is always the physical feats that often steal the spotlightโthe speed demons, the powerhouses, the high-flying daredevils who command attention and applause. But beneath the surface lies a battleground unseen by mostโthe arena of the mind. Here, the real contest unfolds, and the athlete's mentality reigns supreme.
Raw physical prowess may define a fighter, but it is the mentality that forges a champion. The athlete with the right mindset can turn a crucial moment into a victory.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) highlights that mental health disorders impact as many as 35 percent of elite athletes throughout their careers. This underscores the critical importance of psychological well-being in sports. Consider the case of Simone Biles, the globally acclaimed gymnast, who bravely withdrew from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to prioritize her mental health. What is it about mentality that can lead someone to step away from the greatest challenges?
Why does Manny Pacquiao kneel in prayer before his fights? Or why does Hidilyn Diaz unleash a primal roar when she hoists a barbell? And what about the jubilation and belief among Filipinos when Olympian Onyok Velasco clinched second place in the 1996 Summer Olympics?

Nestled along the idyllic location and picturesque coastline, the small town of Mapanas is a charming gem that boasts a rich maritime antiquity and a vibrant community. Between the towering rock formations and vibrant seascape, lies a story of fortitude, and triumph. This is the tale of the Mapanas Footballers, a congregated group of youths who have turned their passion for the alluring game into a testament of their unyielding spirit.
The Mapanas Footballers' journey began on the very streets they often called home. Some of them were typically seen as โbaggage boysโ (tag for those who meet arriving fishermen; help in carrying the boat toward the shore in exchange for fish). Other members of the team help their parents in the farm; while a few were ordinary teens who assist their parents at home and earn income for the family.
From plain, sheer observers, these fledglings decided to join the local tournament organized by their coaches. Initially, 10 of them encompassed the team who were chosen based on their performances during the tourney. Consequently, they found themselves kicking and jolting the soccer ball. From nothing, they were too uncertain and diffident at first to show what they got. Discipline was hard for them to learn but the insistent training from their persistent and equally determined coaches made it happen.

The Menโs Volleyball Team of Unit I did not waste any time in the much-anticipated match against Unit IV, where they handed them their first loss of the tournament with a commanding display of tenacity and discipline, with final scores of 25-17 and 25-18, tallying another point in the win column.
Unit I concluded their second game of the tournament on a high note with a concerted effort. From the get-go, they showed precise ex*****on of plays, banking on their defense and capitalizing on their go-to players to stay close in defending the championship tilt.
Throughout the game, Turla performed well-orchestrated plays with equal distributions among his spikers, confusing the blockers of Unit IV. With an intimidating presence at the middle of the net, Estinopo showed impenetrable net defense and executed unstoppable solid quick and differential plays.
Unit I maintained their lead, not letting the SiSaRoPa hitters catch up, thanks to the commendable tandem on floor defense of Eulin and Estarada, who dug hard hits from Lozano.
Unit IV seemed rattled against the defending champions, as manifested in their net infractions, crossing, rotational errors, and faulty services, which eventually led to a significant gap and their first defeat, making it extra challenging to clinch the elusive gold for their unit.

Staged in the heart of Pambujan, a new boxing ring stood firm at the St. John the Baptist Park flocked by boxing enthusiasts and spectators who waited for the thrilling and most-anticipated bouts in this yearโs NSPAA Meet.
In the blue corner, Carl Donoga of Unit II- BiBoSaLaRo, Palarong Pambansa 2023 Bronze Medalist, defended his coveted title against the red cornerโs Marjum Morallos of Unit III-CRAA, who did not show signs of surrender and even displayed total power and resilience in 52-54 kg. category.
However, given the undeniable boxing skills of Donoga and yet a neophyteโs play of Morallos, the game was cut short through Referee Stoppage agreed by the officiating officials, judges, coaches, and tournament manager, for the safety of the players.
In the spirit of true sportsmanship, Marjum accepted his fate, shook the hands of his competitor, and went down the ring with full smiles knowing that he fought a good fight. Carl, on the other hand, took a bow in front of his opponentโs coach and widened the ring bars as a sign of respect when Marjun left the ring.
