Congratulations to Joshua Liabres and Ralph Daniel as one of the champions in Coach Paul's Badminton Tournament held in Pagsanjan, Laguna last March 23, 2024!🎉 The pair clinched the gold medals in Men’s Doubles Level E while Liabres had another entry in Non-Gender Category. Liabres teamed up with Ms. Jaila Urgel of SmashBox Badminton Court and secured the 1st runner-up spot.🌟

Your dedication, skill, and relentless determination have truly paid off, and your victory shines as a testament to your hard work and passion for the sport. 🙏🏆

As we enter a new academic year, the 𝗨𝗣𝗟𝗕 𝗕𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 participated in their first tournament of the semester. Held last September 9, 2023, the Smashbox Anniversary Tournament was participated by numerous players around Laguna. It was a new experience for the team as they paired up with players they do not usually play with. Nevertheless, the team still proved triumphant by bringing home multiple medals.

In the Women’s Doubles, Loise Lezada and her pair managed to clinch the bronze medal🥉 after a thrilling battle for bronze. Meanwhile, Kristine Berdin and her partner settled for the silver medal🥈 after their final match.

In the Men’s Doubles category, Lorenz Zapanta and his partner challenged Level E, wherein they secured the first runner-up spot with a silver medal🥈. In Level C, Zyg Edralin, together with his pair, dominated the bracket and brought home the championship title🥇.

In the Mixed Doubles division, Loise Lezada successfully obtained two bronze medals🥉: one in Level D, where she served as a substitute player, and one in Level C, where she paired with Nathan Reyes. Lastly, Zyg Edralin and Lindsay Reyes went on an all-out match with Kristine Berdin and her pair, with the former settling for silver🥈 and the latter taking home the crown🥇.

Also, some team members participated in the tournament but fell short of obtaining a podium finish.

This tournament has been an excellent opportunity as we go back to training since it provided new insights and allowed us to evaluate ourselves in order to know what aspects to work on.

“A break from the practicalities of the world”

That is what the name Ivory Space suggests as a café-restaurant that offers a tasty menu, aesthetic interior, and tranquil ambiance—a perfect place to pamper yourselves after an arduous semester.

Just as the UPLB Badminton Varsity did, they gathered at Ivory Space in Calamba, Laguna, last 20 June 2023 to celebrate the semester's closing and express farewells before returning to their hometowns.

Additionally, this place is owned and managed by one of the team members, Francis “Elmo” Quintana.

CMBTC 1st Badminton Cup in Marikina City🏸

Before officially going on vacation, Lorenz Zapanta returned to his hometown and participated in the Coach M Badminton Training Camp (CMBTC) 1st Badminton Cup. Held on 18 June 2023 at the Marikina Sports Center, the tournament was attended by various players of different age groups from Marikina City and adjacent municipalities.

Lorenz and his partner settled for a 2nd runner-up finish in Level D among ten participating pairs, divided into two brackets. They placed second in their bracket with a 3-1 standing, but due to the tournament’s mechanics that only the top 1 in each group will advance, their ranking was already determined after the round-robin.

This only shows that wherever they may go, the team members still possess the perseverance to garner experiences that will hone their skills.

Meet and Play with Alums🏸

Seniors and juniors played with and against each other in a friendly match-up last 02 June 2023. Six alumni varsity members returned to the badminton courts of Copeland Gymnasium wherein the current team got the opportunity to meet and play with them.

This occasion has been a chance to establish a connection between the current and former players through games. Additionally, gratitude was expressed as the alums treat the current varsity to dinner wherein stories of struggles and triumphs were shared around the table. The seniors also did not fail to impart their experiences and lessons to the younger generation which can help them prepare for what’s ahead in this path they have already ventured.

🏅INDUCTEE TO THE PI GAMMA MU INTERNATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY🏅

Congratulations to one of our team captains, Uriel Ian "Uan" D. Coronel, who was recently inducted into the Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences. Pi Gamma Mu is an international organization that aims to encourage and promote excellence in the said field.

This proves that aside from Uan's badminton skills and leadership qualities on the court, she also astoundingly excels in Social Sciences.

It is truly an honor that you are part of the team.

🏸WHACKERS’ 1ST SMASH FOR A CAUSE🏸

As the end of the second semester approaches, the UPLB Badminton Varsity Team participated in one last tournament for this academic year. Held on 28 May 2023 at the Whackers Badminton Academy (WBA) in Victoria, Laguna, the team took part in Whackers’ 1st Smash for a Cause - a fundraising badminton tournament for the Hemophilia Advocates Philippines - Laguna Chapter. The team clashed with various players from different clubs as well as against some of their own teammates. Despite battling with the scorching heat which proved more challenging than some of their opponents, the team successfully brought home multiple medals.

In the Women’s Doubles Level D, UPLB players faced each other in the finals. Bianca Pagkalinawan and Lindsay Reyes went head-to-head with Irish Junio and Trixy Velasco with the former winning the championship🥇 while the latter settled for first runners-up🥈.

In Mixed Doubles, the team conquered two different levels. In Level D, Francis Burias and Kristine Berdin perseveringly went all out in their final match clinching the silver medal🥈. While in Level C, the only category with a round-robin format, five UPLB players sought action in this group. The pair of Karl Echano and Bianca Pagkalinawan topped the bracket with gold medals🥇, followed by the duo of Neil Buso and Irish Junio who grabbed the silver medals🥈, while Trixy Velasco and her partner from WBA got the bronze medals🥉.

Lastly, in the Men’s Doubles, the team dominated in three different levels. In Level E, Lorenz Zapanta and Blue Mosqueza consistently won all their matches and took home the championship title🥇. In Level D, Nathan Reyes and Tofie Falcon faced a series of nerve-wracking matches and courageously acquired the bronze medals🥉. In Level C, Neil Buso and Francis Burias exceptionally bested all the players in their bracket and prevailed as champions🥇. On the other hand, Zyg Edralin and Jefferson Rebancos, with their respective partners from SmashBox, settled for second runners-up🥉.

This tournament has been a great opportunity to try out fresh pairings among the varsity players and put into action their learnings from the training sessions while contributing to a noble cause.

PALARONG UPLB 2023

As the Palarong UPLB commenced once again after the pandemic with the theme “Balik Sigla, Balik Saya”, the UPLB Badminton Varsity members teamed up with their respective colleges to vie for the championship title. With the College of Engineering and Agro-industrial Technology (CEAT) serving as the host for this year’s event, a total of seven teams for the students and five teams for the faculty and staff were to battle for the title. Held on April 29, 30, and May 6 at the Copeland Gymnasium, the varsity members played and officiated the games, contributing to the success of the event.

In the women's student division, Irish Junio and Trixy Velasco led their CAS Team to clinch the championship title. They were followed by Bianca Pagkalinawan and her teammates from CEM-SESAM who paired up to secure second place. Meanwhile, Uan Coronel, Andrea Gonzalvo, and their teammates from CDC-CHE-CPAf managed to climb up the ranks and have their bronze medal finish.

In the men's student division, the defending champions, CEAT, added another year to their 4-year winning streak, led by Karl Echano, Neil Buso, George Labitigan, and Blue Mosqueza. The silver medal was seized by Lorenz Zapanta and his teammates from CFNR who courageously challenged the defending champions. Meanwhile, Andre Sy, Elmo Quintana, Sam Latoza, Nathan Reyes, and Dan Gamala united with their CEM-SESAM teammates to win third place.

Besides the varsity members, the team’s coach, Coach Morê Santander, also prevailed in the men’s faculty and staff division wherein their team, Blue Champs, won the championship title.

The Palarong UPLB 2023 has been a great platform to exercise the competitiveness of the team as they battle each other with a goal at hand. But at the end of the day, the spirit of camaraderie remains and everyone will continue doing their best to improve as a team.
