The Feast of the Sto. Niño is a feast commemorating the holy image of the child Jesus. Considered as one of the oldest surviving Christian relics, it was a gift by Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon of Cebu in 1521. Found to have survived the destruction of Cebu during its colonization, it is believed to be a miraculous image since then. The Minor Basilica del Santo Niño, the oldest parish in the Philippines, was then built on the spot where the Sto. Nino was found, and it still houses the image at present. In 1965, Pope Paul VI, through his Papal legate, granted a Canonical Coronation of the Sto. Nino. And raised its shrine to the status of Minor Basilica on its 400th anniversary. Throughout the years, the Sto. Nino has been a major religious and cultural icon: its feast day is on January 20, and the Sinulog, a festival in honor of the Sto. Niño, is held every third Sunday of January.

The title “Mother of God” goes back to the third or fourth century, but the Greek term Theotokos (“The God-bearer”) was officially consecrated as Catholic doctrine at the Council of Ephesus in 431, thus becoming the first Marian dogma. The doctrine is based on the doctrine of Incarnation, as expressed by St. Paul: “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4).

The Immaculate Conception is the belief that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception. Originating in the 7th c. feast of the "Conception of Mary by St. Anne" Pope Clement XI, in his Bull, Commissi Nobis, established this solemnity for the entire Church (1708) and declared Principal Patroness of the Philippines by Pope Pius XII in 1942.
