Inspirational Cabin Crew Journey of Mr. Gabriel Nerbes Siat of Philippine Airlines✈️💙

📍THE BEGINNING

It wasn't really much of a dream when I was a kid but It all started way back when I was in high school when I dreamt of traveling the world because of my History subject. Weird isn't it? Well those were the times I was exposed more of the world cultures, traditions and origins. And the United Nations week, do you still remember those events in your school too? If you can follow, your memory is awesome! Haha anyway, to cut the long story short, it started right after graduation.

I'm a graduate of Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English at Bicol University way back 2018. I left home right after graduation and worked as a part-time call center agent in a local company in a nearby city from my hometown, Libon Albay. And during weekends I did my self review for the board exams. Few months later, I got my license, and it was my first win to be a Licensed Professional Teacher. Because it was my lola's dream for me to continue her legacy as a teacher. But there's something in me that I want more than just making my family and especially my lola to be proud of me that I'm already licensed to teach. So I told her my plans of becoming a Flight Steward.

📍THE PLANNING and PROGRESS

I saw this online post from a Facebook friend that they are hiring flight attendants for this company so I urgently edited my resume for submission. I sent my application last January 19, 2019 and guess what?! I received a phone call from that company a month after my application! And I was like... uhm ahm...(screaming from the inside)..I don't know how to respond to that call. All I did was to say "YES" and "THANK YOU" It was February 19, 2019 that time and it was one of my happiest reactions ever! Moving forward... my scheduled interview was March 19, 2019 (My aunt's birthday too) so it's "19-19-19"

📍THE INTERVIEW

Two weeks before my scheduled interview, I went to Manila and stayed at my friend's house to prepare myself more and be familiar with the nearby places. It was also my first official travel to Manila so I got culture shocked because it's way different from my province life in Albay, Bicol. I bought myself a nice interview outfit for me to be more presentable and have that professional look that they are looking for. (There's a back story for this outfit that I will share on the next chapter)
The moment of truth has come! 03-19-19 0730H I was the third one to arrive at the venue. While waiting for the others, I mingled around with the other applicants and I found out that we were all part of the mass hiring of the company. Some applicants are from far away provinces too and from other airlines as well. I also found out that we were about 600-700 applicants on that day!
I arrived early so I was part of the first batch to be interviewed. At first I was very nervous but I realized that it will not help me if I let myself get into my nerves. After that initial interview, I was one of the lucky applicants that made it through to the next round of interview. I didn't even know that it was a series of interview for the whole week! So I prepared myself even better for the next round. To cut the long story short, I passed, passed again and passed again and jumping to the final interview...
The final and highlight question was "What is something that needs to be improved in you Mr. Siat?"
"I think it's my skin color because I don't have that fair, white and glowing skin like the usual flight attendants..." And someone from the Panel cut me from uttering words... "What if we want to hire you because of your skin color?" And the rest was history.

After passing all of the interviews, I processed all of the documents needed before our training. It took me two months processing and settling everything. I got a delay from my medical because my wisdom teeth needs to get extracted. Lucky me it was after my birthday (April 9) when my dental appointment was made haha.

📍THE TRAINING

June 17, 2019 — The start of my dream turning into a reality! Day 1 it is and everything was surreal! I'm wearing my corporate attire and I felt the joy and excitement in me. There, I have met my co-trainees. We shared our different stories on how we made it that far, some of them waited for months to be called, multiple rejections, transfer to a new workplace but everything falls to one goal, it is to be a National Flag Carrier of our Country. My whole training experience was a roller coaster ride. Because I have no idea about aviation at all. To cut the long story short, the biggest thing you need to take care of is your "lifeline" We are only allowed to have 3 fails in exams and practicals. And guess what? In a matter of 2 weeks out of the 3-month long training, I already consumed 3 so that means one more fail and it's goodbye. But God didn't let me down so I made it through. I can't tell further details anymore because the rest will be your experience in the future.

📍GRADUATION: Pinning Ceremony

September 30, 2019 — The magic begins! It was one of my emotional moments in my life ever! I've finally earned my wings! No more dramas because you can watch our graduation and batch video on my YouTube Channel: Gabriel Siat

Hello FA Aspirants 👋
Some of you here are messaging me every few minutes regarding.. What are the Qatar Airways Cabin Crew rules and regulations?

When starting a career as Cabin Crew, there will be a number of new rules that you will have to follow. However, if you become Qatar Airways Cabin Crew you will need to follow rules and regulations that are specific to the airline. These will mainly be because you are required to relocate to Doha, Qatar. Since you will be living in Qatar, you will have to follow the same rules as any other citizen – these are mostly put in place for religious or cultural reasons!

What are the Qatar Airways Cabin Crew rules and regulations?
*Curfew
Qatar Airways provide all of their Cabin Crew with free accommodation in Doha. One of the rules that is put in place within the accommodation is a curfew. Cabin Crew have to be inside their accommodation between 4 am and 7 am every day. There are security situated at the entrance of every Qatar accommodation to ensure that this rule is enforced. Cabin Crew are allowed to stay in another Qatar accommodation, but they must stay with the same gender.

If you decide to travel outside of Qatar during your days off, you will obviously not need to stick to this curfew as you will no longer be in Qatar.

*Minimum rest
You must be in your accommodation 12 hours before your flight, this is your minimum rest period before work. In this time you are only allowed to leave your accommodation for 90 minutes. In this 90 minutes, you are free to do whatever you want. For example, you could go shopping, to the gym or to see friends.

*Accommodation
Since you will be staying in Qatar Airways accommodation, you have to follow a number of rules that are set in place. The main rule is that you are only allowed the same gender to stay in your accommodation. So, if you are a woman you can either have female crew members or your mother or sister.
If you are a man you can either have male crew members or your father or brother stay in your accommodation. If your family is visiting you will have to let Qatar know by making an online application.

You are also not allowed to have any candles within your accommodation. This rule is set in place to minimise the risk of fires. Each accommodation will be equipped with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

*Alcohol
Qatar Cabin Crew are banned from bringing alcohol into their accommodation. However, they are not banned from drinking alcohol completely. You are allowed to drink it inside clubs, bars
and restaurants in Doha. However, you are not allowed to bring any alcohol back into your accommodation with you.

*Smoking
You are not allowed to smoke at all when you are Qatar Cabin Crew. Qatar Cabin Crew are banned from smoking at all when they are working for Qatar Airways. This includes smoking in and outside accommodation and when off duty.

*Pork
You are also not allowed to bring any pork into your accommodation. Since Qatar is a muslim country, pork is banned and you will not be able to find pork in any supermarkets. However, this doesn’t stop you from eating pork when you are on
lay overs outside of Qatar.

*Visitors
While you are working for Qatar Airways and living in accommodation, only certain people are allowed to visit you. These are other crew members, anyone with a residence permit, and your family. All of your guests have to leave your accommodation by 10 pm.

You are allowed family members of the opposite gender inside your accommodation, but only family members of the same gender will be allowed to stay the night.

*Clothing
Qatar Cabin Crew are not allowed to wear jeans when they are in the office, technical building, aviation clinic or when they are traveling with Qatar Airways.

However, if the jeans are of good quality and black, then they may be acceptable. Cabin Crew must wear business attire, and women must wear skirts that cover their knees.
*Phones
Cabin Crew are not allowed to use their phones, or any other electronic device, when on the bus to and from work. Qatar want all of their Cabin Crew to maintain a professional image that reflects the airline, while they are in their uniform.

*Photos
Qatar also have a number of regulations based on posting pictures of yourself online. Cabin Crew are not allowed to post pictures in their uniform, in a bathing suit, or with other crew members/friends when there are ci******es or alcohol in the picture.

Again, this is to preserve the image of the airline. Qatar don’t want any disreputable images of their Cabin Crew circulating on the internet.
*Behaviour on flights
There are also a number of rules that Qatar Cabin Crew have to follow while they are working. Firstly, Cabin Crew are not allowed to chew gum while at work. They are also not allowed to have religious or political debates with either passengers or colleagues. They are also not allowed to talk or gossip about their management team.

*Other rules
When Qatar Cabin Crew find out they’re pregnant, they must resign immediately. Also, if a crew member wants to get married they need approval from management.

They will be given approval if they have been working for the company for at least 5 years.

As you can see, Qatar Airways have a lot of different rules and regulations for their Cabin Crew! Most of these rules are in place either to keep a good image of the airline or to adhere to the rules of Qatar culture and Muslim religion.

If you have more questions please feel free to message me again. I’m always online except if I have a flight po.. So, that's it guys 💕 God bless and Stay Safe Everyone. 🤗
