"Wen ngarud" might be tricky to explain as it can be translated to a lot of things, but for these 14 Ilokano visual artists, it is an affirmation and expression of their Ilokano identity.
The group show entitled "Wen Ngarud" expresses each artists' own affirmation and emphasis on individual visual narrative and iconography which are true to each own visual language. Bringing the experiences of Ilokanos into the canvas, these artists share different stories just like how the word “ngarud” encapsulates a range of emotions, attitudes, and interpersonal dynamics that are central to the Ilokano identity and communication.
With “wen ngarud” as a marker of empathy, connection, and more; the featured artists are ready to show and say, “Let’s do this ngarud!”

The "Wen Ngarud" group art exhibit by the YloContemporaryo Artist Collective opened yesterday, July 6, 2024, showcasing artworks from 14 Ilokano visual artists.
As the term "ngarud" is undoubtedly an Ilokano affirmation, "Wen Ngarud" conveys the artists' conviction, acceptance, and assurance, bringing the experiences of Ilokanos into the canvas and sharing different stories on the emotions, attitudes, and interpersonal dynamics that are central to the Ilokano identity.
“Let’s do this ngarud!” and visit their exhibit at 1159 Creative Space, 2F Makati Central Square, Chino Roces Ave., Makati City. Exhibit will run until July 19, 2024.
Wen Ngarud
If there is one word that makes Ilokanos more Ilokano, it is the word “ngarud.” It is present in their daily conversations and is often placed at the end of sentences like “Wen ngarud” (Yes, indeed), “Anya ngarud” (What then), or “Kasta ngarud” (That’s how it is). The word ngarud could be difficult to explain but it conveys conviction, acceptance, and assurance. It may seem to be an Ilokano conyo way of delivering a conversation but it is an honest-to-goodness vernacular expression. In the true sense of Ilokano vocabulary from the old school to the millenial, NGARUD is an affirmation.
For this group show entitled WEN NGARUD, each artist expresses his/her own affirmation and emphasis on individual visual narrative and iconography which are true to each own visual language. Bringing the experiences of Ilokanos into the canvas, these artists share different stories just like how the word “ngarud” encapsulates a range of emotions, attitudes, and interpersonal dynamics that are central to the Ilokano identity and communication.
