๐ด๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐: Blue ZonesโThe Remaining Frontiers of 100-Year-Olds
As we hit the nail on the head of the first chapter, weโre putting something ironically shortlived into our petri dish to start off the next chapter. But before all that we would like to thank everyone who supports the stories that we believe, are worth telling. Now, weโre taking you on a journey of discovery that involves geography whether it may be barren lands, uncharted territories, or a town hall that changed our livesโ vista.
Following his National Geographic feature on the secrets of living longer in 2005, New York Times bestselling author, Emmy Award-winning producer, and 3x Guinness World Record holder Dan Buettner spent more than a decade doing his research on Blue Zones. It was when he came across the Danish Twin Study that Dan thought of the places where there are more 100-year-olds than the rest of the worldโparticularly in Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, Ikaria, and Loma Linda.
Although these places are wildly different from one another, they share a lot in common. One is the sense of community despite the mileage of walking. Exercise for them is not intentional but ensued in daily life. When we talk about their social support, weโre not talking about DMs and tweets, these are meet-up groups with a lot of dancing and singing. Most centenarians didnโt have to go to the gym because they had so many meaningful activities under the sun. If you ask them โhow to live longerโ they would say that it is because they donโt even try. It was never their goal to live long, it wasnโt a part of any wellness program.
Another key factor to these Blue Zones is the remoteness and isolation that keep out the western food culture. With that being said, they have to grow their own food. Believe it or not, only 1% of the edible food on the planet is being consumed by mankind. A lot of corporations tolerate unhealthy diets to either profit by fixing our problems or get more sales by selling delicious but deadly food. Omega 3 fat is not from the fish but from the algae that they eat. Even microwaving damages the enzymes of the food. The process is something that differs from the food that Blue Zones have. They eat 95% plant-basedโ60-75% astonishingly carbohydrates, mainly fiber, they fast every single day and they follow the 80% rule. You might think of plant-based as something that is expensive. Yes, it is if you don't grow it on your own. As you might have imagined, their routine includes a lot of gardening. Contrary to the health-conscious, they drink a lot of wine and coffee. Not in one seating, but through small amounts daily.
A man in Ikaria aged 106 with no signs of dementia, says that heโs waiting on death without complaining even if he has lived through 2 world wars and 2 pandemics. It could be too simplistic to hear the advice โsmile all year roundโ but honestly, even the mayor doesnโt know the secret if there is even a secret. Many of the similarities are counterintuitive. They are agile because they have to walk up and down the hills. There is no age discrimination so they donโt keep up with the Joneses. With good quality and purpose in life, they pretty much donโt care about the woo-woo of class distinction. It is almost egalitarian. So remember, loneliness is just as bad as smoking ci******es so if you want to age gracefully, get less blue light and be with the right people. Make the healthy choice the easy choice!

๐ด๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐: The Founder of Modern Nursing and Her Victorian Pie Charts
Florence Nightingale, a social reformer, scientist, researcher, and statistician named after her hometown in Italy, wrote a report on the medical failings during the Crimean War with over 900 pages. If that doesnโt keep you at the edge of your seat, the reasons reek why Florence was never a womanโs name until this Lady With The Lamp was recognized as a legend.
Early on, Nightingale was never tone-deaf about the needy. She could hear a pin-drop of suffering from a mile away. As an Aristocrat, she was only expected to marry a rich gentleman instead of going to work, let alone going to university. This is why at a very young age, she doubted herself for wanting things that other upper-middle-class women did not want. Through rigorous education in maths, science, philosophy, history, and classics together with the ability to speak Italian, Greek, and Latin, Florence had the audacity to turn down marriage proposals. She wrapped her head around the idea that affluence and public service are hardly skewered for a balancing act. Her parents wanted to distract her so she was sent on a Euro Tour. It backfired as she only learned more from the pundits of the earth.
With only 3 months of training in nursing, Nightingale changed the world forever. Before her stint, hospitals were outright precarious as nursing was not a profession. It was either a task for nuns or a job for prostitutes and inept uneducated drunkards. Not long after landing a job, she got so good at it that when a conflict between Russia and Turkey broke out, she was summoned to serve a vital role in the Crimean War. A curveball that was one for the books as women were not allowed to enter military hospitals before. Only 38 out of the 200 nurses who applied to join her team qualified.
In shock after witnessing soldiers from the frontline lying on their own excrement with rats and fleas around, she ordered her team to scrub the overcrowded and understaffed hospital from floor to ceiling. She also established a kitchen and a laundry as she knew that hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, and ventilation were essential. She roamed 20 hours a day with a lantern from room to room ministering patient after patient from night to day. They handed clean sheets, sent sympathy letters to the families, unclogged toilets, replaced soiled bandages, and bathed the patients knowing how important nursing is.
Her practice lowered the mortality rate from 10% to 2%. She believed that big data is God's work; it was the measure of her purpose. Since infographics cannot be ignored, she exhibited numbers through pictures. Showing that more patients were dying from infection than from wounds, she established formal reports through statistical coxcomb charts that will later become famous as Nightingale Rose Diagram or Polar-Area Diagram.
Proving that 16K of the 18K deaths were from preventable diseasesโnot the battle, she was the first woman to receive the order of merit from King Edward. She was also given the โNightingale Jewelโ representing a Royal Red Cross from the queen. Her perseverance was believed to have evolved in UKโs National Health Service (NHS). The founder of the Red Cross even admitted that Florence was one of the inspirations why he established the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Military officers were alarmed by her influence but her patients supported him. Over ยฃ44K was raised to fund the Nightingale Training School. Her 1st book in 1860 entitled, โNotes on Nursingโ sold more than 15K copies in 1 month. She also became the first female member of the Royal Statistical Society writing over 150 books, pamphlets, and reports on health-related issues. Florence was the author of โCassandraโ, a book on how men label intelligent women as irrelevant. Last May 12 of 2022, marked the 202nd anniversary of Nightingaleโs birthโa date yearly celebrated as International Nursesโ Day. As the saying goes, care for 1 person, that's love. Care for 100 people, that's nursing. You can find Florence Nightingaleโs one and only voice recording onlineโcaptured by Thomas Edison.

Your next dance challenge could be something meaningful after all. Here's why:
๐ด๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐: Converting a Decade of Dance Sessions to Life and Career Lessons
If a lot of listening and talking could predicate a trainer as someone passionate about doing his job, what more if that teacher involves a lot of visual and physical demonstrations? This is one of my realizations after training over 60 dancers for a citywide competition. We mightโve celebrated for winning silver but the 15-year-old me felt that we couldโve gotten gold. Nobody remembers that 2nd placer! This marks Lesson #1, You can prepare all you want but without character, any form of winning can feel like losing. This taught me Lesson #2, you might feel like you donโt belong to the people who you share a passion with but your passion can always make you feel like you belong to it. In my case, I was not comfortable among dancers if we were not dancing but up to this day, I still know that dance is a part of me.
The learning experience is one of the reasons why itโs best to enroll your children in summer dance camps. Even if you donโt want to, you wonโt be able to stop your kids from dancing anyway. No thanks to TikTok acquiring Musical.ly. Going back, note that everything physical is also cognitive. If memorizing a sonnet sounds like hard work, try learning a backflip. Dangerous, innit? Lesson #3, endure injuries. I literally broke my bones a myriad of times before and though it doesnโt hurt anymore, the memories around it are indelible. Only take calculated risks.
Dancing will bring you out of your shell. You have probably seen the award-winning choreographer, author, and director, Mari Madrid in the music video of Justin Bieberโs Love Yourself. Almost all of her storytelling with her husband Keone Madrid were impacted by her degree in creative writing. Without a background in dance, she cited that her writing would not turn out to be that authentic. Lesson #4, finding your voice.
Dr. Arnel Calvario, being one of the pillars of modern danceโor what we call hip hop as a genre of danceโstarted popping his moves in 1997. Performers who know him understand the importance of looking back at their roots. He is now known as the North Star of SoCal Dance Communityโa society behind your favorite artists' dance routines, especially Kpop groups. It may seem like an overstatement but dancers are agents of change. Without learning and unlearning, performing arts will go obsolete. If you donโt innovate, you would always hear the crowd murmuring โWhatโs new?โ This is why a lot of civil rights movements in the 70s and 80s are associated with a style of dance that defined a generation. Lesson #5, Influence people. Turn passion into purpose.
Yes, there are small big things that we should pay attention to. On the global stage, dance styles such as Krump have already been considered an art form just like ballet. Movements taken literally capture time and history as references to the future. Without small details, you cannot achieve grandeur. A simple knee-jerk could change an โokayโ piece to a remarkable performance.
Lesson #6, stay teachable. With deep work, you can meet your deadlines in a day or two but know that all the creativity that leads to you accomplishing a mission credits to a lifetime of practice. Passion is a waste of emotions if it has no use. The truth is it is hard to sustain a daily life as an amateur. Unlucky dancers like me lived in a bubble where we forget everything outside. So when it pops you realize that you have responsibilities. Ben Chung, one of the Kinjaz and a former member of the Jabbawockeez said that we should hold on to life with a loose grip. If youโre not fortunate enough to make a living out of what you love to do, it is never wasted. Passion alone is not enough. 7th and so far the last lesson, Purpose. They say live a little, I say dance a little. Even if it makes you look like a sore iguana. And by the way, you donโt have to record it.

๐ด๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐: Developing Internal Standards with The Handyman of High Art
Have you ever wondered why dads look like birthday boys in a toy store whenever they visit a home depot? The sculptor and filmmaker named Tom Sachs went a little overboard with his bricolage creations. When I say a little, I mean he created his own Prada toilet, Hermes hand grenades, Chanel guillotine, NASA space program, and his own McDonaldโs. Although his fans-turned-friends include personalities like Adam Savage, Casey Neistat, and Gary Vaynerchuk, his humble beginnings extend back to being a janitor and repairman trying to make ends meet. After making his colleagues look bad as he did too much designing for their company building, his employer hired him full-time to decorate the office. It took him 30 years to get paid to make art. Now, his revered works are being demonstrated from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to the Pompidou Center in Paris. This is probably the reason why he treats his audience at the same level as his.
His version of contemporary art circles around pop culture and consumerism with a belief that beauty, has to have a utility. It is like an intellectual jihad between functionalism and art. He argues that art is done for how it is done and not for museums or art collectors. Itโs a way of looking at the world not the way it is but the way he wants it to be.
One of his newest multidimensional crafts is an NFT with 3,000 pieces. This allows users to build their own mini-rockets with different brands and launch them in space. It belongs to the very few exceptions of non-fungible tokens that are actually not terrible as it encourages its community to participate and contribute. Plus, their Six Sigma rocket factory makes sure that the rockets donโt go to waste as they get recovered after being launched.
Tom knows that the reward for good work is more work but not everything needs to be overtaught, sometimes you just need to trust your gut. Do it fast, do it wrong, and do it again. He proves that shelling out is the key to success. You donโt have to do 100 push-ups because you have to but because you get to. Tom mentioned that if the bad guys don't take a day off, why should he? Output before input but do the task before you improvise. Any 2 things in the world are connected by a 3rd one and finding that 3rd one is the hardest.
Tom thought that people are looking for life outside the planet because we don't fully understand why it started. To his surprise, the best technical people who are working as scientists and engineers at NASA are extremely philosophical. If you would look up Sachsโ Crest, it shows his ingrained Internal Standards which include authenticity, intuition, and transparency. Completing an artwork is a question of character and will not skills. You have to be honest with all your methods. You might just need to make the right "wrong" decision. There is no bad color, only bad application. Tomโs complex yet intimate style is composed of these.
He believes that everyone is a young artist inside regardless of age. Sadly, money is an illusion by which we all live and die. So would you rather get paid well doing things that you don't want to do? Because when you love what you do, it doesn't matter if you get paid or not. This is the importance of a drawing board, notes and sketches could only take seconds or minutes to finish but materializing them could take a lifetime. When creating, Tom reminds us of 3 cornerstones: how it looks: Design, how it works: Utility, and how it impacts: Community. I vouch that his crown jewel is that his fingerprints are everywhere. Not because everybody knows him but because he's using the art and beauty of almost everything that we take for granted. Get out of that creative rut! You can check out Tomโs boring sneaker collaboration with Nike called General Purpose Shoes (GPS).

๐ด๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐: What the Lives of Fireflies Tell Us
On my most recent trip at the province of Sorsogon, I witnessed a phenomenon that almost felt like a plot twist of a suspense/thriller film that turned into a romantic sci-fi. The municipality of Donsolโaside from being the Whale Shark Capital of the Worldโhides a grandiose show of light. As a creaky boat carried us through a journey across the brackish water of Ugod river, an eerie feeling filled the air. With the moon being our only source of light, the vessel's engine was shut, and I heard nothing but the boatmen paddling in the same path where the freshwater from the Mayon Volcano and the saltwater of Ticao Pass are shared. It is almost deafening. A piece of peace that any city boy would buy.
While the stars beamed above us, little challengers flickered from afar. Despite it being a trillion times smaller than tons of celestial bodies, it appeared the same before my eyes. Fireflies! I was โstarstruckโ for the lack of a better term. Then I told myself, โAt last! A picture-perfect view that my camera couldnโt captureโ. The synchronicity of thousands of lights going on and off almost looked like it was Christmas in May. Too bad, it is a celebration that fireflies would rather miss as their larva stage take 1 to 2 years to complete; only to live for 2 months!
This is when the way of life shook me down to my core. These tiny beings reminded me that no matter how small we are compared to the darkness that surrounds us, our glimmer of hopeโregardless of what we go throughโmust never go bust. For a couple of times, our guide tried to capture a firefly but as he kept it in his hands, its light switch off. A successful act of deception! We thought that it died so we had to let it go. This just proves that the most used language works. It is not English nor Mandarin or Spanish. It is bioluminescence. An ability found in many organisms including bacteria, algae, jellyfish, worms, crustaceans, and sharks to name a few. There are more than 1,500 known species that luminesce in fish alone. If we compare the number of mankind to bioluminescent organisms, we may finally look cute.
Firefliesโ light is the most efficient light in the world. Almost 100% of the energy in their bodiesโ chemical reaction are emitted as light. One of the elements that enable them to produce light is Luciferase; a chemical that is proven to be useful in different scientific research including forensic tests and food safety testing.
As much as we want fireflies to be everywhere, light pollution and habitat destruction are two of the reasons why their population is declining. Again, it exposes how manmade marvels can be harmful to flora and fauna. Let us be mindful that if a community of fireflies gets paved over by modernization, they donโt just move and migrate to other places, they fade forever.
Unlike fireflies, our inner light doesnโt ignite and just die out. It will continuously dazzle until it is seen, felt, and understood by fellowmen. Keep in mind that the brightest spotlight may cause stage fright, but the light that comes from within can blind the darkness around us. Not by quantity but by intensity. Not by popularity but by purpose and not by selfish intent but by the selfless driving force.
As I write this part before my flight back to Manila, one thing is for sure. As simple as it seems, fireflies can spark an inspiration to fight for what is right. No combustible cause can spread like a wildfire until we start illuminating someone at arm's length. You call the shots, blaze, and fly firefly!

๐ด๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐: Effortless EffortโThe Paradox of Inaction in Action
A few weeks ago, we dipped our toes in โWu Weiโ as one of Allan Wattsโ core principles. Today, weโll scratch the Teflon off this virtue famous for being the highest form of Taoism. So if someone uses it as an excuse to fail, procrastinate or act lazy, you may take it with a grain of salt and immediately blow up their cover. As Mencius mentioned, in order to cultivate the doing of non-doing, it must be watered and weeded.
Sages like Confucius and Zhuang Zhou were champions of Wu Wei which was also adapted and implemented by Legalism and Zen Buddhism. As Bruce Lee cited, water may either flow or crash. You may try to rule the planet but it will slip through your fingers as that world only exists in your mind. The pursuit of satisfaction is the main reason why we arenโt satisfied. No entity could entirely change the world as you could only gain it without putting it in the palm of your hand. The beauty of flow boils down to resilience and tenacity. The calmness and stillness reject the pressure from the outside without even trying.
People with fair skin love to be tanned yet people with dark complexion rally around whitening products. These are unnatural wastes that move us away from the flow of life. Itโs purely artificial. Conforming to manmade standards only to belong is imprisonment of rigid traditions dating back to the unhinged colonial period. These socioeconomic ideas with rock-solid rules to control the masses make no perfect sense. We should not be consumed by the inevitable and respect natural things that occur and exist. Once you get driven by value and desire, itโs about time that you disrupt the courseโas social learning could affect your personal preferences.
Know that by controlling natural things, you hinder their growth. Thus, don't bend to your will, just be one of it. Birds yet known for their ability to fly, don't fly all the time. Athletes pay a lot of attention to their rest and recovery as much as they do to their grueling training. We get it, you are running out of time but remember how limited your day is; your energy is also finite. On the side of every mountain is another mountain so overthinking is counterproductive. Just hit the vital points to sustain your ax's sharpness and unleash effective blows. Visualize this vignette with your favorite superhero cruising through the New York skyline without crashing into any skyscraper. With flow state, you become the action. When accomplishments become a driving force, it turns people into control freaks working to the bone. Instead of fulfillment, you value perfection. With Wu Wei, uncertainty becomes pleasurable and passion commits no attachment to the outcome. Albeit quiet and patient, not complacent and passive. Once we abandon ourselves and follow the path of nature, consciousness shuts down and the soul takes over. Donโt stretch to one extent so you wonโt always have to keep your cards to your chest.
Imagine the way of Kung Fu, Surfing, and Parkour as it acts like water. With amplitude more than just aptitude. Fast your mind and your heart like a rebel who disrupts the hypnosis of society. Should you calibrate before you push the envelope? Or just try not to try? This time, be privy to nature.
