HAPPY WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY 2021!
04 OCTOBER 2021
The UAP Commission on Education wishes you a most meaningful celebration of the World Architecture Day, 04 October 2021!
Let us do our best in working for a Clean Environment for a Healthy World!
While Gubat, Sorsogon is veritably a paradise, due to extreme weather, life stops at certain times of the year especially for children who need to go to school as their learning spaces are used by evacuees as shelter. The Marurugi Project is a heartfelt solution proposed by educator architect Jojo Yujuico Gutierrez and Ma. Bernadette Margallo and Alexandra Regina Morales, his two former students who are now architects themselves, to provide temporary shelter so education is not disrupted.
The "Temporary Mobile Barangay Health Station" is a highly relevant proposal that harnesses the collaboration between the barangay and its constituents, which should be explored especially now at the time of the pandemic. It is inclusive and progressive in its view of delivering health services to the whoe community. The prodigious concept is put forward by architect-couple Rowell Reyes and wife Belle.
"Mangroves Bioremediation Built Ecosystem" is a proposal submitted by Ar. Anthony D. Sarmiento. For coastal risk reduction, it is proposed to help recover mangroves if appropriate ecological eco-systems are restored.
"Pugad" is a proposal for a resilient and sustainable community in Bulacan put forward by GRIT BULSU, made up of Architects Melanio Martinez, Elena Javier and Angelo Plamenco. It echoes the challenge of so many of our coastal communities, rendered even more vulnerable in the pandemic, already having to contend with natural threats.
One of the 7 finalists at the Beyond Grit Competition is this hauntingly, mesmerising entry by Ar. Ronnie Yumang.
He painted a picture of the anthropocene age changing much of the earth's systems and how we might repair the damage done by the proposal for Regenerative Architecture - Systems Thinking. A powerful concept, so relevant in what we are currently experiencing and we just know: mistakes may be worth it when lessons are learned.
Pass it on.
Competition Participants will receive individual information.
Hello.
We had wanted to posted the video of the Orientation we had for the Competition Participants but there have been various challenges that has made it difficult for us so I am sharing here the slides presented.
Should you have questions or need clarifications, please let us know.
Please note that so much of what we are doing is being affected by our current global crisis, that has hit closer to home with the passing of the National President. But we are forging on.
Thank you for your patience, participation and attention.
The problem has been etched forever in our minds. We see this challenge of solid waste management all over the city.
The discussions have been going on for some time but it took us two weeks to firm up the architectural solution and come up with the narrative.
The concept is strong. We need public spaces to learn values in the community that cannot be taught with words alone.
These design narratives are what will push forward our architectural solutions to societal problems for our people to understand our message.
PATHWAY: The Power of Public Spaces The state of of our solid waste MISmanagement along our esteros, beside our informal settlements in the city is our eternal cause of desperation and inspirat...
Deadline for the digital submission of entries is on the midnight of June 10, 2021.
Blind judging will be conducted to prevent a conflict of interest — so each entry will be assigned a registration number and emailed to each competition participant. No markings should be made on the collaterals to reveal or hint the identity of the participant on the boards or the video.
ARCHITECTURE + RESILIENCE >> It is time.
The ORIENTATION of the participants to the National Conceptual Design Competition took place today, May 8, 2021, at 4-6pm today.
It was an amazing time to review the guidelines and entertain questions that enriched us all!
Architects ought to be in the frontlines in building resilience in society along with the other professions and certainly the stakeholders - fired with grit and inspired by the opportunity for nation-building.
For this competition of ideas, we look forward to the entries which would specify a societal problem, a responsive solution and the collaterals which include a 2-minute video of their design narrative.

Most approaches to mitigate Climate Change have been a top-down approach. There is a need to change the language and approach, if we want sustainability to take root in the Philippines. We need to translate scientfic terms to practical acLons. We need a bottom-up approach, where we start with creating sustainable homes for people, that will in turn develop into sustainable communities. It is the role of every one in the building industry to insure that all structures are sustainable.
Mike Guerrero's advocacy is sustainability. In a nutshell, he help us understand how being sustainable is a way to be resilient.
Ar. Guerrero is the Managing Partner of Asian Architects, a firm established in 1986, that continues to deliver institutional, sacred and hospitality buildings, striving to harness appropriate technology to arrive at climate-sensitive, innovative and sustainable design solutions. A passionate crusader of sustainability, he is one of the founders of the Green Architecture Advocacy Philippines, and was its Chairman from 2011 to 2019. He is a member of the Board of Advisers of the Philippine Navy. He is a Fellow of the United Architects of the Philippines, one of the first twelve APEC Architects and the first ASEAN Architect with a specializaLon of Green Architecture in the Philippines.
A frequent resource person and mentor, he generously shares knowledge and experience of professionalism and sustainability with others, with the hope of making the world a better place to live in.
