As we venture into the future, we witness the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems like ChatGPT, META AI, Bard, DALL-E, Midjourney, and DeepMind. These systems, developed by tech giants like Alphabet, Meta Platforms, OpenAI, and Microsoft, have an uncanny ability to produce entirely new data that closely resembles human-created content. While lauded for their ingenuity, creativity, and potential to enhance human capabilities, these systems raise a crucial question: how far will this AI advancement extend? Will it reach a point where AI seamlessly disguises itself as human, mimicking our works and creations to an almost indistinguishable degree?
The seemingly counterintuitive pursuit of generating AI creations that are virtually indistinguishable from human-made works is puzzling. Instead of surpassing human capabilities, why not focus on harnessing and amplifying human strengths? While generative AI can undoubtedly assist and complement human endeavors, its current trajectory suggests it may transcend its intended role of supporting humanity, becoming a looming threat that could replace human workers and usurp their identities.
A case in point is the controversy surrounding CNET and its sister publication Bankrate's use of AI to generate news articles. This experimental move drew widespread criticism from the media world, highlighting the inherent risks of relying on AI for journalistic tasks. Despite CNET's assurances that human editors review and correct AI-generated articles, the underlying message is clear: humans are now providing assistance to supposedly autonomous AI tools.
Further compounding the concerns are the "very dumb errors" that generative AIs are prone to, as exemplified by an article where an AI miscalculated compound interest. While acknowledging the drawbacks of AI-generated content, media outlets continue to experiment with its use, producing entire stories that send shivers down the spines of journalists and artists alike. These AI-generated works, while requiring human correction, offer undeniable convenience, working tirelessly without breaks or demanding higher wages, unlike their human counterparts, who rightfully advocate for better working conditions and fair compensation.
Another glaring example is GMA News' introduction of Maia and Marco, touted as the "Philippines' first AI sportscasters." This seemingly progressive step sparked outrage among internet users, journalists, mass communication graduates, and students. Given the aspirations and dreams of countless individuals who yearn for such opportunities, this move was perceived as a mockery of human potential, passion, and professionalism.
Despite their uncanny ability to mimic human works, generative AIs lack the spark that distinguishes human creations โ emotions. Human writers, artists, and sportscasters infuse their work with emotion and passion, breathing life into their creations. This fundamental difference between AI and human capabilities is irreplaceable and cannot be replicated by mere algorithms.
Adapting to the ever-evolving technological landscape is crucial, but embracing AI in this manner may hinder human progress and stifle our creative potential. While opposing this approach may be perceived as hindering modernity and suppressing AI advancement, it is equally important to safeguard the artistic and journalistic integrity that defines humanity. Allowing AI to usurp these roles deprives humans of the opportunity to excel and contribute in these fields.
At the end, while generative AI offers undeniable benefits and can streamline various tasks, it is not a panacea. Relying on AI to take over the reins of human endeavors, particularly those that demand emotion and passion, is a misguided approach. Instead, let us leverage AI as a tool to enhance human intelligence, amplifying our capabilities rather than replacing us with AI imposters.

Perhaps youโve heard a similar-sounding remark or encountered instances where common mental illness terms are substituted into sentences like mere adjectives. While there is significant progress in battling the taboo surrounding mental health, a new phenomenon arises: the romanticism of mental illness, a dangerous pursuit of glamour in suffering.
To romanticize, from French romantique, means to describe or treat something as more attractive or appealing than it actually is. The romanticization of mental disorders, according to Anya Marquadt, occurs when one views a mental disorder to be โglamorousโ or โbeautifully painful.โ While the labyrinthine of sadness and suffering has always been inherent to our realities, the false depiction and misrepresentation of mental illnesses in our society today depreciates the gravity of the issue encompassing mental health.
The idealization of mental illness and sadness, in general, can be traced back to 18th and 19th centuries, marking the rise of the โtortured artistโ trope. This advocates the idea that misery and suffering were the driving force of renowned artists such as Vincent Van Goghโthe most quintessential figure for this tropeโSylvia Plath, and Beethoven to create their masterpieces which have endured through generations. This trope perpetuates the proposition that agony is essential to artistry. Through this, we are told that pain is purposeful, and that it will direct us to a path of profoundness through creation thus, causing us to seek more suffering in return. This prompts romanticization of suffering as a coping mechanism and a creative avenue, making sorrow a desirable trait we should conceptualize in ourselves.
In addition, popular culture and media amplifies this message. Cinema, music, literature, and art has sensationalized mental health, massively undermining the real struggles of those who genuinely suffer from it. For example, you need your depressed character to be automatically alright? Add a love interest! Or you need your character to be exaggeratingly violent and harmful? Give them a personality disorder! These inaccurate and stereotypical depictions propel us to conjure false beliefs about psychiatric disorders. According to Das et al., โTo popularize psychiatric themes among viewers, [filmmakers] largely focus on unipolar conflicts rather than taking an overall view.โ
The โtortured artistโ trope and sensationalism of mental health maybe the primary factors that drive this new phenomenon to action. The rise of these types of contents in various social media platforms such as Tiktok or Instagram can cause a resurgence of the stigma surrounding mental health as much as before, which may discourage mentally-struggling individuals to seek professional help. Such portrayals can be extremely damaging to our perception.
Moreover, it has also manifested in real life situations, such as people self-diagnosing through pseudo-psychiatrists on the Internet or by the symptoms as portrayed in films, and ordinary people incorporating mental health vocabulary in their everyday lingo such as:

The glamorization of mental illness may reinforce the stigma a multitude of mental health advocates fought so hard to eradicate, and many may begin to undermine the experience and struggle as being falsely depicted and done just to attract attention. From stigmatization to sensationalism, this phenomenon may significantly hinder global progress towards fostering a more empathic, informed and supportive society for mental health.
To reiterate, sadness is inevitable. There are times in our lives when we feel significantly downcast, irritable, and exceedingly anxious and sensitive, but it doesnโt necessarily equate to us being mentally ill. To describe our feelings out of context is completely unfair to the people who genuinely struggle with a variety of mental illnesses. Maybe there truly is a glamour in the harshness of our realities, but we must not constantly and actively seek to embody it, for it is a perilous pursuit towards existential dread and relentless suffering. It is not desirable. It is not romantic.
So next time you catch yourself slipping and self-diagnosing, stop and think better. You are not so โOCDโ when youโre triggered by a lopsided ruler. The experience of mental disorders should never be romanticizedโto do so in an illness in itself.

CMU President: โAsa man diay mo nagpahimutang sa inyong mga payag-payag ug diin man sad mo nagpugas sa inyong mais?โ
CMU President: โSa pagkakaron, kinsa man na nga property?โ
Buffalo leader: โCMU Sir.โ
Daghang Salamat!

While the Philippines is one of the LGBTQIA+ community-friendly in the world, we see that the journey of being in the rainbow community comes at a high priceโostracization, discrimination, and harassment. Hence, The Gateway, the Official Student Publication of the College of Arts and Sciences, stands in unwavering solidarity with the forefront of the LGBTQIA+ movement. We strongly believe that now is the crucial moment to enlighten society about transgender experiences, challenges, and conditions across various sectors.
In the recently concluded University Press Conference 2023, our very own publication โ The Gateway โ garnered multiple awards and was recognized as the overall champion! Everyone never failed to deliver and produced works that needed to be heard. Truly journalists, indeed! Congratulations!

Behold the eerie submissions for this cursed Halloween gathering, where the very essence of fear itself shall be our judge, gauging the audience's terror through the sinister beats of their quaking hearts. The unholy reckoning approaches on November 10.
Whose malevolent tale shall ascend to the gruesome throne of horror and ensnare the very soul of Halloween? Dare you gaze upon the abyss of fear?
Welcome back, dear students! After that heavenly 9-days โLong Weekendโ, it's time to face reality and head back to school. Did you enjoy it? Of course, you did. But now, let's talk about something that might send shivers down your spine. No, it's not a ghost story. It's the release of your 1st semester grades!
Anyway
Let me present to you Cael, Cael was the ultimate procrastinator. He had a motto that echoed in his head - "Grades are just numbers." He took it quite literally, and his college life was a hot mess. He skipped classes, crammed all-nighters, and submitted assignments with the grace of a sleep-deprived sloth.
Sounds like you? It's because you could be Cael!
Listen up, students. Don't be like Cael. Embrace your academic responsibilities. So, shall we approach the upcoming semester with resoluteness? Strive to excel in your studies and work, and avoid repeating the mistakes that have plagued poor Cael.

Bringing the news up to your home is just the least of it. Journalists unveil the truth, deliver platforms for diverse voices and help build a more knowledgeable and engaged society. With no takes and turns, they go bravely with haste. Aiming to get every piece of information, document every scene, jot down every word of information and be the voice of the citizens in times of crisis. With no takes and turns, went off the field bringing only the armor of a piece of paper and a pen. Soldiers with no right armor in a war indeed.
In todayโs timing, though technology is quite an advancement, the challenges journalists face also more advance โ compared than before. Letโs take the intimidation and harassment they get from various actors. These acts can range from verbal abuse and threats to surveillance and interference in their work. While social media has opened new opportunities for journalists, it also has brought additional challenges for them.
Journalists work to publish news on issues and events affecting the world. They conduct interviews and documentation with expert sources. Visit locations of certain events and search public records to get accurate and /or entertaining facts. With these, journalists are more prone to danger. Theyโre spoon โ feeding their enemies โ enemy of society โ but not knowing which is which.
Bring you friends close and your enemies closer.โ But in this case that doesnโt work out. Journalists risk their lives to bring the truth without them knowing who to trust to. The most prevalent challenges they may face in this hostile environment are the constant physical conflicts or targeted attacks or terrorism. Which represents a direct threat and may have been taken the form of kidnapping or ex*****on threats due to their reporting or them being journalists. The worst is, they may be used as hostage in exchange of something that terrorist asked for. Furthermore, physical threat may include their families and relatives. Physical threats are the most traumatizing part of being a journalist. But in cases like this, it is more like passion over security. Who would ever risk their lives unsure? So, salute to those who use their pens against all the odds to provide platforms for diverse voices and help build a well โ informed society.
The accuracy and credibility of the journalist differs in the details of their content; whether itโs fact or bluff. Whether a journalist is covering whatever type of events or entertainment news it is, they have a collective responsibility to abide by a code to avoid conflicts of interests that may compromise their integrity or impartiality. There was a survey that revealed that 46% of journalists see a lack of trust in the news as the biggest challenge in modern journalism (Acloque, 2021)
Journalism remains a deadly profession, yet the murder of journalists is left unresolved. Other threats against journalists continue to grow. The United Nations (UN) is actively working to protect journalists in the present and those who aspire to be. This is evidenced by an increasing number of declarations and resolutions. The uncontrollable threats for journalists are always a step โ forward. But this doesnโt hinder journalists from producing content about certain topics. Journalists continue in using their pens as their voice for their people. Although, they are prone to threats and justice is not fair at some times. This is why we โ journalists โ have our freedom of speech and freedom of expression which are also protected by them as human beings. To give more justice, UN established the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists way back 2013 to raise attention to the issue of impunity for those who used their voices and to promote the safety of media professionals worldwide. It was established to address serious threats, violence and challenges that journalists face in the course of their work.
Raising awareness about these issues, the dangerous and challenging conditions that journalists may face, and advocating for accountability, the justice UN established this celebration annually. The fact that many crimes committed against journalism such as violence, harassment often go unpunished might come to an end as this celebration seeks to protect the fundamental right to ensure safety of journalists.
