BARLEY THE PROPHETIC MEDICINE

Talbina is a meal made from barley flour, formed by adding milk and honey to the dried barley powder. It is called talbina, which comes from the Arabic word laban meaning yogurt (milk/fermented churned milk), because of its resemblance to yogurt, as it is soft and white.
In Islam, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) prescribed barley for seven diseases.
Barley is mentioned in about 250 hadiths which showed that it is used as an important nutrition in islamic history. Hadiths show barley taking place in trade life, economic life, health and social life of muslims
Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned in his Prophetic Medicine about the health benefits of the barley grain. He said that a broth of boiled barley in water was beneficial for a cough and sore throat, as well as cleansing the stomach and quenching thirst.
He also described how a broth made from ground barley(talbina) had many healing properties, describing it as nutritious and filling, warming and soothing for the stomach, helping help to regain health and effective in maintaining bowel regularity.
What Is barley?
Barley is a member of the grass family called Poaceae. There are many varieties of barley grown throughout the world and only a small amount is used for human consumption; it is one of the main grains fed to livestock. Barley kernels must first be polished or "pearled" to remove the inedible hull.
Health Benefits of Barley
Barley has numerous health benefits. It is known for its ability to help alleviate diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity. It is also effective against diseases like atherosclerosis,diabetes, insulin resistance etc. Given below are some of the benefits.
• Barley is low in fat and is known to reduce craving some kinds for food and therefore very useful to those who want to lose weight. It acts as an appetite suppressant making people feel like they have eaten more than they really have.
• Barley is high is soluble fiber and can reduce blood cholesterol and blood glucose levels. It helps in reducing the cholesterol level in the body as the dietary fiber in barley binds to bile acids and helps dispose them through the f***s. Consuming Barley is said to soothe and calm the bowels. Dietary fiber in Barley is helpful in making your digestive system run smoothly and maintaining a healthy colon.
