“Subaru Wow” Episode 5-SUBARU BOXER Engine More enjoyable experience on the road. Subaru firmly believes that the Horizontally-Opposed Engine is the optimum design for driving enjoyment. The pistons face away from each other in a 180º...more. Balanced & Composed. Greater Stability for Easier Driving Since the Horizontally-Opposed Engine is structured with the pistons mounted horizontally, it has a lower total height and is more compact and lighter than an in-line engine or a V engine. This allows for level cornering and more stable high-speed driving, thereby helping to realize the SUBARU ideal of enhanced driving safety. Cabin-protecting layout. In the event of a head-on collision, the Subaru Boxer Engine and gearbox are designed to slide beneath the cabin for your protection. Related: Passive Safety Enjoyable, Smooth Acceleration The pistons in an in-line engine or a V engine generally move vertically. However, in the Horizontally-Opposed Engine, the opposed pistons move horizontally and the opposing forces cancel each other out, thereby reducing the amount of vibration and providing a more comfortable feel to the engine. The SUBARU BOXER engine, which powers every vehicle in the Subaru line, is renowned for its superior balance, smoothness and power delivery — and has been for 50 years now. This horizontally opposed design boasts a low centre of gravity that helps create more balanced handling, flatter cornering and greater stability on every type of road. It’s also an inherently compact, smooth and responsive design that feeds power directly to the drivetrain with maximum efficiency. Subaru offers a wide range of these engines — 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder, naturally aspirated and turbocharged — to suit a wide range of drivers and driving styles. Powerful stuff, we’re sure you’ll agree. Smooth Acceleration Drivability Ultra-low center of gravity packaging Comfortable ride Most sports cars make adjustments in the suspension system to ensure roll
“Subaru Wow” Episode 4 –X-MODE Subaru models equipped with the Lineartronic CVT transmission feature enhanced Active All Wheel Drive. Select models feature X-Mode. These new safety and performance features help improve vehicle control on low-friction surfaces. When X-Mode is activated, it electronically controls the engine, transmission, All Wheel Drive system, brakes, and the VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) system. X-Mode helps reduce potential wheel slip on slippery surfaces, climbing steep inclines, and navigating rough roads. X-Mode helps increase driving performance, confidence, and control. How X-Mode Works: X-Mode is turned on by pushing the X-Mode switch on the center console. An indicator light on the instrument panel illuminates. When X-Mode is operational, the Multi-Function Display provides the status of steering angle, driving wheel status, and activation of the ABS system (if necessary) and operation of the VDC. While X-Mode can be activated at speeds below 25 mph, it becomes operational at 18 mph and below. When the vehicle speed exceeds 18 mph, X-Mode stops functioning. Subaru X-Mode operates under three principles: [1.] To increase the potential of the electronically-controlled Limited Slip Differential that lies at the heart of the VDC [2.] To apply the SI-Drive technology to the engine, transmission, and other components for optimum control on slippery roads [3.] To give drivers peace of mind by assuring them added driving assistance. X-Mode reduces accelerator input for increased control of engine output, helping control wheelspin for better traction when you are driving on slippery surfaces and rough roads. When X-Mode is activated, wheelspin is reduced and grip is enhanced by controlling the engine, transmission, AWD system, brakes, VDC and other critical components. Activating X-Mode engages 5 different forms of control to limit slipping tires: Engine Throttle In normal driving, when the driver steps on the accelerator, the
“Subaru Wow” Episode 3 –LINEARTRONIC CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION SUBARU’s Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) continuously adjusts the gear ratio automatically, with no loss of momentum. Adaptive Control automatically shifts to the best gear ratio for the conditions and the way you drive. CVT lets the engine run at the ideal speed, increasing power and responsiveness whilst reducing use of fuel. Changing between conventional fixed, stepped gears is slow and inefficient. In normal manual or automatic transmissions, engine power is momentarily disengaged to change gear, compromising performance. Driving a SUBARU is quieter and smoother. LAG-FREE PERFORMANCE Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) uses a chain instead of a belt, offering a greater span of overall ratios. This provides a faster response to throttle input and improves performance and efficiency. Acceleration is responsive, instant and lag-free thanks to advanced torque control. An active torque-split AWD system monitors traction conditions, the transmission and driver inputs, continuously controlling and optimising the torque distribution from front to rear. “Subaru Wow” Episode 1 – Boxer Engine Why The Boxer Engine? The 'Boxer' engine is so called because the movement of the engine's pistons resemble the movement of a boxer's fists in the horizontal plane. However, unlike the boxer's fists that both move in the same direction, half of the 'Boxer' engine's pistons move in the opposite direction. This very important difference provides the key benefits of the horizontally-opposed (Boxer) engine layout where half of the total number of cylinders and therefore pistons lay on their sides in an east-west configuration moving in opposite directions. Contribution to Vehicle Handling and Stability The key benefit of the Subaru 'Boxer' engine's horizontally-opposed layout is not about its power output or environmental performance but its contribution to the vehicle's handling, stability and as a result, safety. Firstly, because the cylinders in the Boxer engine lay on their sides the overall height of the engine is significantly lower especially when compared to the more normal 'inline' engine where all the pistons move in the same direction in a north-south configuration. This results in a low centre of gravity that has very significant advantages in terms of the vehicle's handling and stability, by helping to keep the tyres more firmly planted on the road surface as a result of a lower level of weight transfer from the inside wheel to the outside wheel when cornering. Furthermore, because half of the total number of cylinders is on one side and the other half on the opposite side with a common crankshaft sandwiched in the middle the left-right weight distribution with the engine positioned on the centre line of the vehicle is equal. This also makes a very significant contribution to vehicle balance, stability and handling particularly when cornering or making rapid changes of direction. The overall length of the Subaru Boxer engine is comparatively short compared to a conventional 'in line' or 'V' engine layout as a resul
“Why? SUBARU” Episode 9- Eco Driving KEEPING THE ENVIRONMENT IN MIND WHILE RAISING A CAR’S FUEL EFFICIENCY IS IMPORTANT, MAKING THE DRIVER AWARE OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY DRIVING HABITS IS JUST AS VITAL. ONGOING EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECO-FRIENDLY DEVICES THAT OPERATE AS A COMMUNICATION INTERFACE BETWEEN THE DRIVER AND THEIR CAR. SI-DRIVE SI-DRIVE is Subaru’s own driver-assist system which you can choose driving performance according to your mood or driving scene. “Intelligent Mode(I)” delivers greater fuel efficiency and more environmentally friendly performance, and “Sport Mode(S)” delivers smooth engine performance and better acceleration. Also, “Sport Sharp Mode(S#)” delivers direct response to the acceleration and exciting acceleration for a part of our vehicles. ECO gauge An “ECO gauge” has been installed within the meters to serve as a guide for fuel efficient driving. The pointer on the ECO gauge helps to notify the driver whether they are driving in an eco-friendly manner. By assisting the driver in keeping the ECO gauge pointer in the “+” area, fuel efficiency can be improved by about 5% (in-house measurements). Auto Stop Start Auto Stop Start is the system which powers down the engine automatically when you stop at the red light or stuck in a traffic jam and starts it up again when departing. We focus on direct response as Subaru’s system can start the engine up more quickly, not to mention that it reduces unnecessary fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions in an ordinary drive. Aerodynamic body By designing the shape of the body and bumper to reduce air resistance and adding a vehicle undercover and spoiler (not available for some models), superior aerodynamic performance has been achieved. The whole body contributes to the fuel efficiency. Active Grill Shutter The active grill shutter has the function of improving aerodynamic performance. Much lower fuel consumption is achieved by opening and cl
“Why? SUBARU” Episode 6-Preventive Saety Assist safer drive with advanced technology. We can say that eliminating an accident is the ultimate goal of any car manufacturer. Therefore, Subaru has developed the stereo camera and radar in more than 20 years, making the advanced safety technologies including “EyeSight.” Subaru continues to evolve in future to enhance enjoyment and peace of mind all around automobile. ________________________________________ EyeSight A second pair of eyes. Subaru is committed to driver safety, and that was the key objective behind the development of EyeSight, as avoiding a collision is the best way to remain safe on the road. Two cameras that function similarly to...more. Stereo Camera Stereo Camera Recognition Collision Avoidance Pre-Collision Braking System In case of the presence of collision risk, it warns a driver of danger. If there is not avoidance control, it applies a brake to reduce speed or stop automatically. If there is avoidance control, it applies a brake at maximum force quickly by “Pre-Collision Braking Assist.” Throttle Management * If the driver mistakenly selects drive instead of reverse when the car is stopped or traveling very slowly, and EyeSight detects an object in front of the car, Pre-collision Throttle Management emits warnings, flashes the lamp and restricts engine output. This may help the driver avoid a nasty mishap at the front. * The system may not be activated depending on the shape or visibility of walls or objects in front of the car. Reverse Automatic Braking When driving in reverse, four sonar sensors on the rear bumper detect obstacles. When the vehicle detects a possible collision, the driver is alerted. If the driver fails to respond by pressing brake, etc., the brake is applied automatically to prevent collision or reduce the damage from collision. Driving Support Adaptive Cruise Control * EyeSight has transformed the concept of traditional cruise control. The stereo cameras operate in conc
“Why? SUBARU” Episode 5 – Active Safety The technology that underpins Subaru's Active Safety is the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive paired with the uniquely balanced Subaru BOXER Engine. Empowering you to better avoid danger, Active Safety gives you the peace of mind to enjoy driving without the worry of poor weather or road conditions. Mastering driving helps us deliver safe, reliable vehicles that react exactly as the driver intends. Mastering the elements of driving to make vehicles safer Imagine driving on a highway on a rainy day. In many cars, you may feel uneasy due to surface water. This is because it reduces traction and compromises the steering. Subaru's highly developed Active Safety allows you to control the vehicle as intended, providing greater danger-avoidance capability – even in poor weather conditions. Subaru have fine-tuned all the basic functions of a vehicle – driving, turning and stopping – to develop vehicles that offer exceptional stability and predictable control in the most challenging conditions. Mastering the elements of driving makes cars safer. Stability & Reliability Sturdy Body Frames A rigid body is perhaps the most important factor that is regularly overlooked. Cars with insufficient rigidity suffer from shaking throughout the frame when driving over gaps or cornering, resulting in unpredictable, unreliable behaviour. Subaru uses bodies built with the new Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames concept, giving the driver faithful response and reliable drivability. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system has superior weight balance and gives efficient distribution of traction and load to each wheel to limit the chassis rolling and pitching, increasing ride comfort and making the journey enjoyable for all passengers. The system enables stable driving at all times, on all roads, and in all conditions. Suspension Designed for Stability and Agility The front suspension features a longer stroke design to allow th

“Why? SUBARU” Episode 2 –SYMMETRICAL ALL-WHEEL DRIVE Many vehicles today boast four-wheel drive. But only SUBARU has Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD)*. Symmetrical AWD distributes power to all four wheels for better traction on wet and slippery roads. The entire drive system, from the longitudinally-mounted horizontally-opposed Boxer engine to the rear differential, is mounted in a straight, symmetrical line. Combined with the Boxer engine, this system has a well-balanced low centre of gravity design for a more stable and safer ride. Unlike other systems, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive has driveshafts with similar lengths, reducing torque steer. The crankshaft is also central, providing maximum transfer of power to all four wheels at all times. This symmetrical layout provides exceptional stability, traction and improves performance. The benefits of permanent All-Wheel Drive aren’t seen just when driving off road. It’s the safest and most engaging way to drive on all roads - especially if the weather is bad or the road surface is slippery. AWD is invaluable when traction is important in everyday driving situations - like pulling out at junctions, for example. Power transfer is direct, ensuring an instantaneous, surefooted response if loss of traction is detected. Stay Tuned Everyday To Know Why Subaru?
