Speech of Dean Ulan delivered at the 70th Commencement Exercises of SBU College of Law last 23 July 2022 at San Beda University, Mendiola, Manila.

Thank you to Fr. Rembert who, even could not join us last minute, still remembered us and took the time to reflect with us. A truly happy man is one who gives more than he receives. Here is the touching message of our Dear Dom Rembert On Being Happy Let me begin my reflection by sharing to you the short prayer of St. Teresa of Avila. She once prayed, ‘O Lord, save me from these sullen-faced saints, for a sad saint is a sorry saint.’ If happiness is one of the conditions for canonization to sainthood, then my presence in the San Beda College Alabang School of Law will catapult me to the list of candidates for modern day saints. I know I am NOT holy. And I do not want to be called the holy monk. God forbids! I would rather prefer to be called the happy monk. And the SBCA SOL, popularly branded as the happiest law school in the galaxy is the right place to be. How do Bedan lawyers define happiness? For me, happiness is a matter of being in the right place. I can see this in our students who started in Mendiola and ended up in Alabang. Are the students in Mendiola not happy? You bet. They are. They even have a semestral dose of happiness when they see their names included in the enrollment list due to suspension of the two-flunk rule or lowered QPI. In Alabang, it seems to me that their happiness lies in the assurance that they will continue to stay there until the end, no matter what. The endearing and welcoming words of Dean Ulan make them feel that they are at home and in the right place: “Come to Papa.” This is what stability means. A Benedictine virtue that makes every Benedictine monk, every bedan law professor and every law student a disciple of happiness. Another Benedictine virtue that inspires happiness is hospitality. When I go to SBCA SOL office, I am given a special seat in the roundtable. I do not sense any territorial or jurisdictional insecurities.
