The Third Bikol Book Festival

Ekphrasis poetry writing workshop with En Villasis generated a very active participation among our participants yesterday. We are excited to see how these young writers from Bikol develop a new sense of poetic thinking. The Third Bikol Book Festival featured Austrian poet Markus Köhle and the Bikolnon writers who read and performed their works, special thanks to Abdon Balde Jr., Raul Bradecina, Aida Cirujales, Frank Peñones Jr., Mia Tijam, En Villasis, Sonny Sendon, and Elbert Baeta. We thank all participants who cam as far sa Masbate to this art event organized with National Book Development Board - Philippines, the Embassy of Austria in Manila, and other allied groups and institutions.

We will have a poetry reading and jam session tomorrow with CLOUDNINE, local indie trio plus our special guest poet from Austria, Markus Köhle, and Bikolnon poets Raul Bradecina, Aida Cirujales, Enrique Villasis, Sonny Sendon, Frank Peñones Jr. and Abdon Balde Jr. OPEN to PUBLIC. 6PM!

Award-winning poet and TV and Film scriptwriter Enrique Villasis will join us in the third edition of Bikol Book Festival! Come and meet him on September 22, 2024 (SUNDAY) from 1:00PM to 3:00PM and learn the art of writing ekphrasis poetry!

THIS IS AN ONSITE POETRY WORKSHOP. The venue is Kamarin Art Gallery of Savage Mind Bookshop, at 5 Peninsula St. Mayon Avenue, Tinago, Naga City.

Villasis is the author of Agua (Librong LIRA) and Manansala (UST Publishing House), a collection of Filipino poems based on the paintings of National Artist for Visual Arts, Vicente Manansala. He also co-edited the anthology of translation of Hungarian poems to Filipino and other Philippine languages for the Ateneo de Naga University Press. There will be a book signing.

AS PART OF THE 100th CANONICAL ANNIVERSARY OF THE CORONATION OF OUR LADY OF PENAFRANCIA IN BIKOL, a special exhibition and lecture series were organized in Naga City.

The first lecture was given by Dr. Filomeno Aguilar, Jr., a Filipino social historian, born and raised in Naga City, Dr. Aguilar is the former editor of Philippine Studies and serves as professor in the Ateneo de Manila University.

Aguilar together with Jethro Calacday examine oral narratives and historical texts related to this Marian "festival", touted as the largest in Southeast Asia.

The lecture is part of the INA: Power and Intimacy, a special exhibition and lecture series organized with Ateneo de Naga University Press, Holy Rosary Minor Seminary, the Archdiocese of Caceres and the National Book Development Board - Philippines. The lecture is a prelude to the Third Bikol Book Festival.

“… I could tend the small farm that my late father left us in San Roque, Lagonoy. For years, I have only paid the “amilyar,” or the land tax, without truly feeling doing something to the land. I want to change that. I want to dig my hands into the soil, plant seeds, and watch them grow. I want to see if my fat thumb, which has never been particularly good with plants, can transform into a green thumb. I picture myself as a sort of chubby farmer, fumbling though, as I am sure that I would make many mistakes. Then again there is something deeply satisfying about the idea of growing my own food, of living closer to the earth. The farm is a piece of my father’s and lolo’s legacy, and I want to honor that by continuing that connection with the land.”

Markus studied German language and literature and Romance studies in Innsbruck and Rome, and taught German as a foreign language in Tunis. Köhle is the host of the Bierstindl Poetry Slam in Innsbruck. Preferring mid-length prose in addition to his short, lively cross-genre texts, the author has published several books.

His participation to the Third edition of BBF is sponsored by the Austrian Embassy in Manila. We thank Ambassador Johann Brieger for his support to our festival. Organized by Savage Mind: Arts, Books, Cinema and the National Book Development Board - Philippines, the 3rd BBF is the only book festival in the Bikol region that highlights the importance of reading, translation, cross-media, cross-regional collaborations as vital and necessary in the art and creative processes.
