We are at a watershed moment in climate adaptation 04/09/2022

The sobering reality before us is that at no time in history have these various climate and geopolitical pressures and disruptions occurred in succession, with tough overlapping effects. While recovering from one disruption, we will have to face another that is more complex and challenging. Imagine the strain that will be put on public and private resources.

With this, adapting to climate change will not simply be about reinforcing houses and buildings to deal with the stronger winds and rains of typhoons. It will also have to make space for pandemic-related risks, such as having isolation procedures and open air sections for customers.

It will also mean that we are prepared to assure our families of adequate food supplies both before and after climate-related events.

We are at a watershed moment in climate adaptation In the past few years, our newsfeeds have been filled with climate-related events such as heat waves that have sparked epic wildfires, droughts in many areas of the globe, and major storms and flooding in other countries, ours included. The climate disruptions in various parts of the f

“A combination of government guidance and private participation is required to facilitate the growth of green finance in the Philippines.”

🗺 The Sustainable Finance Roadmap will lead the way; ground initiatives include a moratorium on new coal power plants, promotion of renewable energy sources, energy storage projects, and a shift in new investments to clean energy resources and green technology.

🏦 Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has launched the Sustainable Central Banking program to encourage local banks to raise green bonds and to finance green corporate and small and medium enterprise lending.

🌾 The government is also expanding assets and crops to give farmers adequate protection against losses and reinforce risk mitigation and resilience efforts.

🌊The Department of Finance (DOF) is pushing for the passage of a bill banning single-use plastics to end marine pollution and is also finalizing a sustainable finance framework for the issuance of the country’s first-ever sovereign green bonds

VOTE: What should be the order of priority in protecting the environment?

Support for local farmers and the promotion of sustainable agriculture practices ranked first in a poll on the order of priority in climate change mitigation strategies, posted last October 13.

It garnered nearly 500 votes and was followed by banning single-use plastic products and protecting the ocean. Investing in clean energy and green cities came next, while reducing air pollution ranked last.

As Chairperson-designate of the Climate Change Commission PH (CCC), Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez calls on every sector and member of society to act on the issues of climate change.

“Time is not our friend. This could be the last decade that we can address climate change. We have talked enough about what needs to be done. We must act now and move fast,” Dominguez said during the U.N. Climate Action Debate on October 27.

Dominguez leads the Philippine delegation to the 26th United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26), where world leaders and other decision makers will gather to determine how to accelerate action on reversing the devastating effects of the climate crisis.

A new waste to energy (WTE) facility at UPLB is set to expand sustainable waste management research in the University.

The new facility held its soft launching on Oct. 20, which is an output of the project entitled “Establishment of a 25kW Waste to Energy Facility via Direct Combustion process for Municipal Solid Waste.” It aims to explore the potential of WTE technology in moving towards energy independence and environment sustainability for the country.

The project is led by the Department of Chemical Engineering (DChE) of the College of Engineering and Agro-industrial Technology. It is funded by the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCIEERD).
