The duo then consulted the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) to learn more about the issues of the community and discovered that the tribe needed about half a million to a million Philippine pesos to fast-track the processing of their Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) – a process that has been in place since 2007.

“We aren’t millionaires, nor do we have the right connections to make such an amount. So, we decided to use our privilege to be able to make films for a higher purpose and use the power of cinema and Cinemalaya to reach out to potential sponsors and to shed light on the stories of the community,” explains Sumagaysay.

This is chiefly the reason why the directors were in tears when they received the email from Cinemalaya stating that they made the cut. “We have gone through so much crafting this film,” admits Salvadico.

The making of Kat Sumagaysay and Richard Salvadico’s Cinemalaya entry ‘Tumandok’ 'Tumandok,' a docu-fiction film, tracks the life of 'a 16-year-old chieftain’s daughter as she fights tooth and nail with her people for their ancestral land.' It centers on first-time, all-Ati actors, led by Jenaica Sangher and Felipe Ganancial.

The directors also emphasized their film goes beyond the narrative of Sitio Kabarangkalan, covering as well the collective narrative of every indigenous peoples community, "Though this is our debut film, we do not regard it as solely ours. 'Tumandok' is made by the Atis, for the Atis."

The filmmakers hope that "Tumandok" will help the NCIP secure funding for data gathering and validation to substantiate the community's certificate application.

"The Ati is said to inspire festivals like Ati-atihan and Dinagyang. But they have long been marginalized from the festivities and discussions," ended the directors. "It is time to heed their call and illuminate their plight, allowing them to finally call their land their own."

We're excited to announce that our short film, 'One Day, Three Autumns,' directed by first-time short film director Bridget Ng-Ting, has been selected for screening in the SHORTS: THE SUBTITLE SESSIONS section at the 30th SAFILM - San Antonio Film Festival, running from July 30 to August 4, 2024.

Since 1994, SAFILM has drawn film lovers, including the press, filmmakers, industry leaders, and fans. Each year, the San Antonio Film Festival fosters an innovative environment for a few days, providing filmmakers with unique opportunities for networking, idea sharing, and career advancement.

SAFILM has honored notable figures such as Cybill Shepherd (Taxi Driver, Moonlighting), Jackie Earle Haley (Bad News Bears, Little Children), and Kevin Alejandro (Lucifer, True Blood). Sheron Dayoc's The Gospel of the Beast' took home two major awards from a reputable award-giving body in the Philippines, the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino/GAWAD URIAN. Mr. Ronnie Lazaro won the Best Supporting Actor award, and Lawrence Ang, along with Benjo Ferrer, won the Best Editing award.

We hope that soon, this regional film featuring all-Western Visayas actors gets a wider release. 'The Gospel of the Beast' has just won TWO BEST FILM AWARDS from the HIFF - Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival and the Bali International Film Festival - Balinale, as well as the YOUNG CRITICS AWARD in Vietnam.

We sincerely dedicate these awards to the hardworking team behind the film, who have supported us in uplifting filmmaking in the regions.

Sheron Dayoc's 'The Gospel of the Beast' wins at Bali Int'l Film Festival Balinale Director Sheron thanks the jury for the recognition as well as the festival organizers for sharing the Filipino film with the Indonesian audience in Bali

After winning the Golden Star Award for Best Feature Film and the Young Critics Award at the inaugural HIFF - Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival, "The Gospel of the Beast," produced by Southern Lantern Studios and directed by Sheron Dayoc, has now been awarded BEST FEATURE NARRATIVE at the 17th Bali International Film Festival - Balinale (BALINALE) which concluded on June 7, 2024.

The jury citation states: “This film is engaging due to its strong direction, well-written script, and impressive cinematography. The narrative arc, where the protagonist grapples with a moral dilemma before ultimately choosing the right path, is particularly compelling and resonates deeply.”

On behalf of the director, producers, cast, and crew, we would like to thank the jury for this recognition and the festival organizers for inviting our film to be shared with the Indonesian audience in Bali.

The Echoes section, a non-competitive segment, aims to expand the audience's horizons with bold and innovative films. This year, a diverse selection of 49 short films, chosen from over 4,500 submissions from directors around the globe will be screened.

The 20th edition of FEST will take place from June 24 to July 1, 2024.

Two films from Southern Lantern Studios have earned spots in this year's Bali International Film Festival - Balinale - Sheron Dayoc's feature film, "The Gospel of the Beast," and Sonny Calvento's short film, "Primetime Mother," are set to compete during the festival from June 1-7, 2024. Congratulations to the entire team on this achievement!

“Primetime Mother" will be screening at the 23rd Nevada City Film Festival taking place from June 21-23. NCFF is renowned for its emphasis on fiercely independent cinema, showcasing innovative, progressive, and exciting new voices in film. The festival primarily focuses on shorts and short filmmakers, with features included throughout.

The Gawad Urian (Philippine Critics Award) - nominated film "The Gospel of the Beast" is headed to the Czech Republic for the world's oldest film festival dedicated to films for children and youth. Now in its 64th year, the ZLÍN FILM FESTIVAL (International Film Festival for Children and Youth) showcases around 300 films from over 50 countries worldwide, drawing an attendance of over 100,000 children and adults since 2010.

"The Gospel of the Beast" is part of its "Beyond the Childhood Horizon" section.
