EVALUATION OF HATCHERY-PRODUCED GIANT FRESHWATER PRAWN (GFP) AT GINTONG BUTIL AGRI FARM
Exciting progress at Gintong Butil Agri Farm!
Our follow-up field trial of hatchery-produced Giant Freshwater Prawn (GFP) is underway. WPU Hatchery staff are carefully monitoring the growth and survival of the post-larvae, with regular water quality monitoring and sampling to optimize our practices for sustainable production.
This trial is more than just a step toward our goalsโit's an opportunity to grow and strengthen the expertise of both WPU and Gintong Butil teams. Together, we're building a future of sustainable farming through dedication, learning, and innovation.

WPU HATCHERY-PRODUCED GIANT FRESHWATER PRAWN (GFP) FIELD TRIAL
WPU Hatchery-produced post-larvae (PLs) of GFP or Ulangโs growth performance and survival in pond will be monitored through initial field trial using the aquaculture facilities of Gintong Butil Agri Farm-a demonstration farm of City Agriculture Office of Puerto Princesa City for natural farming and farm tourism projects.
WPU Hatchery personnel conducted the monitoring of stocked PLs and water quality of the culture pond. Regular sampling helps in making informed decisions about water quality, feeding practices, and overall farm conditions, ultimately leading to improved survival rates and a successful harvest. โProper monitoring and intervention based on these samples are essential for optimizing aquaculture practices and achieving sustainable production goals."
The M&E activities also provided an opportunity to capacitate the technical staff of both WPU and Gintong Butil Agri Farm about the nursery and grow-out of GFP.
LOOK | Sir Jonel Labao, staff from the MAO Office of Brooke's Point Palawan and an alumnus of WPU visited the WPU PPC Hatchery.
Sir Jonel is eager to collaborate and innovate in aquaculture, particularly interested in giant freshwater prawn farming due to its economic potential, environmental benefits, and
technological advancements in sustainable practices.
LOOK | The GeM-PHIL Team and the City Agriculture fisheries personnel with the help of aquatic biology on the-job-trainees releases a hatchery-produced post larvae of giant freshwater prawn in Gintong Butil Agri Farm pond, representing significant collaboration involving the city's
agriculture department.
This initiative underscores a broad educational effort aimed at integrating practical aquaculture techniques with immersive learning experiences. By combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on training in a real-world setting, participants gain valuable skills in sustainable aquaculture practices, fostering a deeper understanding of ecosystem management and resource conservation. Such initiatives not only contribute to the local economy but also promote environmental stewardship and innovation in the field of aquatic sciences.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sir Zaldy Hechanova of DA-BFAR Nueva Ecija for visiting the WPU Hatchery Facility.
Your visit marks the beginning of an exciting journey as we explore opportunities for future collaboration aimed at advancing sustainable Ulang culture.
Thank you for your support and dedication to fostering sustainable practices in our aquaculture industry.
GeM-PHIL Project team conducted sampling of Ulang stocks at Gintong Butil pond alongside the dedicated City Agriculture Office team in Puerto Princesa City.
This collaborative effort is integral to supporting our pioneering Ulang farming project, aimed at advancing sustainable aquaculture practices in the region. During our sampling sessions, we meticulously monitored the health and growth of these prawns, collecting essential data to ensure their well-being and optimize their development in our innovative farming environment.
This ongoing monitoring process allows us to make informed decisions and adjustments, contributing to the success and sustainability of our Ulang farming practices. As we continue to closely monitor their progress, our team remains committed to promoting environmental stewardship and achieving long-term Ulang aquaculture viability. Through partnerships and diligent research, we strive to set new standards for responsible farming and contribute positively to our local community and ecosystem.
Thank you for visiting WPU Hatchery Facility, BFAR Regional Director Emmanuel H. Asis, as we explore future collaboration for Ulang sustainable aquaculture in Palawan and MIMAROPA Region.

A milkfish project of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) targets to address the insufficient supply of milkfish fry caused by high importation rate and low survival of hatchery-produced fry.
Milkfish, locally known as โbangus,โ is one of the most important food commodities in the country. Recognized as the Philippine national fish, bangus has been providing communities with sources of food, livelihood, and income.
