As per the CAL Dean’s announcement on Sep 6, the Department of English and Comparative Literature will be conducting synchronous/asynchronous online classes from Sep 10-13.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this causes our students. We recognize that F2F classes resume for many colleges on Sep 12-13, and that the closure of PAV 1 and the CAL building after last week’s suspensions is not only an additional disruption to your learning experience but also an obstacle for many students on campus who will need to seek space elsewhere to join their online synchronous classes.
We ask for your patience and understanding, and we reiterate our call for space.
We have a new video up on the UPD DECL Youtube channel. Here's Prof. Julie B. Jolo's lecture "Blurred Encounters" on vulnerability and counter-visibility of Filipina migrant workers in London.

'𝐊𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐀 𝐌𝐆𝐀 𝐍𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐀'

UPD Department of English and Comparative Literature creative writing faculty member Gerry Los Banos will launch Extra Time, his latest book, during the Manila International Book Fair on Sunday, 15 September, 1-4 p.m. at Booths 6-8, SMX Convention Center. Of Extra Time: “The YA novel is still a rare commodity in Philippine literature, more so the sports novel. But for young adult readers, sports (and romance) is where they can vicariously encounter many of the
lessons they need to learn in life. For the writer, the plots are built in. In sports, there is defeat and triumph and the story in between.
Extra Time is a novel that should be recommended reading in schools.”
From the foreword by Carla Pacis, Graphic Salute Awardee, 2024 Nick Joaquin Literary Awards
“As we stand and run alongside Benj in his journey, we are compelled to reflect on our own finite existence. One cannot help but ponder: How much of our remaining hours, days, years are we living fully—with and for others?
Benj’s story moves you as much as it inspires. This book is worth your extra time.”
From the afterword by Ronnie E. Baticulon, Pediatric Neurosurgeon and Author, "Some Days You Can’t Save Them All" https://www.facebook.com/share/p/EUcoRVbbGkQVHvkW/?mibextid=WaXdOe
And that’s a wrap! CFP: Shoreline Shakespeares: The 6th Biennial Conference of the Asian Shakespeare Association (Iloilo, 4-6 December 2024)
We are very excited to announce that Shoreline Shakespeares: The 6th Biennial Conference of the Asian Shakespeare Association will take place in Iloilo City, 4-6 December 2024. A shoreline is a dynamic border, being created, erased, and reshaped by the eternal dance of tide and time. It separates yet connects ecosystems, identities, and civilizations. Shorelines set boundaries but also open gateways to different experiences and perspectives. The shoreline serves as a focal point for exploration, transition, and adaptation. “Shoreline Shakespeares” welcomes papers that examine the literal and metaphorical meanings of the shoreline in Shakespeare and his afterlife.
The conference will be hosted by the University of the Philippines Visayas on its Iloilo City campus, adjacent to hotels, restaurants, and shopping. A short flight from Manila, Iloilo City is the regional center of Western Visayas. The area features immense natural beauty with pristine beaches and lush forests as well as vibrant history and architectural landmarks. Iloilo was named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2023.
We are now calling for abstracts in 2 categories: 20-minute panel presentation or 6-minute symposium presentation. Graduate Students are welcome. More information is at https://asianshakespeare.org/2024/07/06/cfp-6th-asa/.
The deadline of submission is 31 August 2024.
Send submissions and queries to [email protected].
We look forward to seeing you in Iloilo!
