The plant species Cyrtosperma merkusii, commonly referred to as giant swamp taro, belongs to the Araceae family and is connected to other types of taro. The edible corm of swamp taro is the primary reason for its cultivation.

In terms of nutritional content, giant swamp taro corms are superior to potatoes since they have a higher concentration of proteins, calcium, and phosphorus. Taro corms have twice as much vitamin B as a potato and are comparable to cabbage in terms of vitamin B concentration. Additionally, taro has higher levels of vitamin B-complex than whole milk. The main bulk starch in corms is found in extremely fine grains, making them easily digested.
