A self-taught artist from Cebu, Wilfredo Cañete, Jr. bagged Third Prize in the Oil on Canvas Category in 1998 with his work, "Palagdas."
Rendered in classical realism, the work is a masterpiece of photographic representation. "Palagdas" depicts a group of boys engaged in gambling. Young, frail, and old before their time, the boys' expressions lead the audience to assume that this is more than just a game of chance. It is perhaps a turning point where triumph or defeat may result in a day of plenty or hunger for children living in the fringes of society.
