DOST-STII partnered with a youth-led nonprofit organization to install a solar-powered STARBOOKS kiosk at a school for indigenous people in a remote community in Oriental Mindoro.
The DOST-Science and Technology Information Institute and Mountain Support PH, Inc. (MSPI) installed another solar-powered STARBOOKS at Sinariri Elementary School in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, on August 14, 2024.
Sinariri Elementary School is a 4-hour hike away from Panaytayan Elementary School. More than 360 elementary students and 11 teachers will benefit from the wide range of free science, technology, and innovation information resources in STARBOOKS.
Earlier, MSPI turned over two portable solar power stations and two laptop units to DOST-STII for deployment as a STARBOOKS server unit in two pre-selected IP schools in the province.
Mountain Support PH, Inc. provides human-centered solutions to socially vulnerable and off-grid mountainous communities.

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) spearheaded the turnover ceremony of the natural textile dyeing implements for the Ifugao Ikat weaving community headed by Mr. Sammy N. Buhle.
This activity was held on August 7, 2024, at Brgy O-ong, Hingyon, Ifugao as part of the celebration of 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
In July 2024, thirteen (13) members of the Ifugao Ikat weaving community participated in a skill-based training on natural dye extraction and textile applications hosted by DOST-PTRI. By providing the necessary tools and technical skills, the weaving community is empowered to preserve traditional textile dyeing, enhance productivity, and use sustainable practices.
These efforts are part of DOST-PTRIโs Fostering the Revitalization of Nascent Textile Innovation Ecosystems in the Region (FRONTIER) Program. This program integrates regional active players for the consolidation of textile research and innovation agendas in the regions.
The ceremony was also graced by DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, Assistant Secretary for Development Cooperation Rodolfo J. Calzado Jr., and DOST-CAR Regional Director Nancy A. Bantog.

Sa kanyang ika-100 na kaarawan, buong puso siyang binabati at kinikilala ng Department of Science and Technology โ

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) recently inaugurated the Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub (NTFIH) at Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) on August 2, 2024. This marks the establishment of the first innovation hub of its kind in the SOCCSKSARGEN region, aimed at advancing the textile industry in Central Mindanao in collaboration with DOST XII - Department of Science and Technology - Region XII and SKSU.
The NTFIH Sultan Kudarat will focus on optimizing the use of abundant Natural Textile Fibers (NTFs) in Mindanao, such as banana, abaca, and pineapple leaf fibers. Central to its mission is the advancement of socioeconomic progress and the empowerment of local communities, particularly farmers and indigenous groups who rely on these natural resources for their livelihoods.
This hub will positively impact 11,797 farmers, 15 fabricator personnel, and 700 weavers, benefiting 12,518 individuals. Additionally, the innovation hub will require twenty-nine (29) hectares of NTF source each year for textile fiber processing, guaranteeing a consistent supply of high-quality natural fibers for spinning.
Additionally, The NTFIH will support the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center (RYPIC) Sultan Kudarat's efforts to improve yarn production and drive innovation within the textile sector by providing a steady supply of high-quality natural fibers.
Stay tuned for the upcoming launch of the RYPIC Mindanao! Exciting details are coming soon!
