The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999, and the award program was founded in 2001. "DAISY" stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, which was the name of the foundation created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family after he died from complications of an auto-immune disease. It aims to celebrate nurses who go above and beyond in providing exceptional patient care, demonstrating compassion, professionalism, and clinical expertise.
