One of the rarest, most unique animals the North Pacific has to offer. Basking sharks 🦈 have become extremely rare in California waters, and there’s some concern about their status. They have been designated as a species of concern, that is are a species that has has some concerns regarding status and threats, but for which insufficient information is available to indicate a need to list the species under the Endangered Species Act. The designation is a means to draw proactive attention and conservation action to these species. North Pacific basking sharks are also listed as “Endangered” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The second largest shark on the planet has experienced a massive decline in population along the eastern North Pacific. There has been no sign of recovery, as their reproductive rate is extremely low. They may only give birth every 2-3 years to litters of only 1-6 pups. They’re susceptible to vessel strike when feeding at the surface, and entanglement in fishing gear as are most of our large whale species.. I’m lucky enough to live and work in an environment that seems to have the highest chance at seeing these rare sharks. Over the 5 years I’ve explored the channel, there has been at least half a dozen sightings of these prehistoric Chondrichthyes. I’ve been lucky enough to see them on 2 separate occasions. Let’s strive to invest in sustainable fishing methods, cut our CO2 emissions as much as we can, and be conscious of what we’re buying as consumers.
