Marimos were actually first discovered and publicized in Austria, and not Japan during the 1820’s. However, the largest ones in the wild come from Lake Akan, Japan - where they are considered a sacred and protected species. The cultural significance of Marimos definitely runs deep in the Hokkaido Prefecture (see our post about the Marimo Matsuri festival). 🇯🇵

We do not recommend purchasing live Marimos from these sources, as we cannot verify where these come from and are likely compromised. Believe it or not, most Marimos in our hobby are farm-raised. This is because naturally occurring moss balls are a protected species around the world, especially in Japan, where they have cultural significance. 🇯🇵

𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗼𝘀: 𝗜𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱?
In 2021, moss balls in big pet store chains in the US were found to carry zebra mussels (see 2nd slide); which are a freshwater invasive species that disrupt local ecosystems. See 3rd slide for how zebra mussels can even clog pipes! 😱

Our Marimos come from reputable farms around East Asia which also distribute to Hong Kong. As a second line of precaution, our moss balls are carefully inspected on arrival, then quarantined in a saltwater solution which eliminates any possible invasive species. 🚫

We are officially introducing snails! 🐌

We know a lot of our followers have been intrigued by these little friends, so due to popular demand, we will be making them an add-on option for your Marimo sets! They’re only 𝟮𝟬 𝗽𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘀!

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀:
Ramshorn snails (Planorbella duryi) are a very common peaceful aquatic snail in the aquarium industry. There are quite a few color variations ranging from red, blue, brown, black, or violet; however the ones Mariimo Co. offers are the pink/red variety. Ramshorns get their name from their spiral shaped shell which resembles an actual ram’s horn. They generally stay pea-sized, (however, can grow up to the size of a 1 peso coin) so you don’t have to worry about them outgrowing the mariimo jars.

As for their diet, they are omnivorous, usually eating decaying plant matter and algae. Don’t worry, they won’t eat your healthy marimos or foxtails. In the jar sets, feeding on the microscopic algae, biofilm or fallen foxtail leaves will usually be enough for these little snails, not much dedicated feeding is required. Ramshorns can also be fed some veggies such as cucumber and zucchini as treats (optional).
*Feed responsibly: Take a piece of food no larger than the snail’s shell. Any uneaten food must be removed after a few hours.

Fun facts!
- Ramshorn snails can store air in their shells which they use to stay afloat. If you’re lucky, you might be able to witness a snail “surfing” under the surface of the water.
- In rare cases, they can reproduce asexually. Ramshorns are actually considered hermaphroditic. But it is unlikely that they will reproduce in large numbers when kept in one of our jar sets.

Warning!
Never release any flora and fauna into your local waterways wherein they are not native to. As pet-keepers and plant-keepers, we must be responsible in keeping our local ecosystems healthy; without the threat of any invasive species.

Let’s talk about: Betta Buddies! 🐟

Betta fish (siamese fighting fish) make excellent buddies for marimo moss balls, and vice versa. These fish love to be among plants, and marimos help keep them curious! 🧐 Furthermore, most types of live aquatic plants including marimos, help keep the water quality optimal by to soaking up fish waste to use as fertilizer. 💧

Disclaimer: Mariimo Co. jars may be too small for most bettas. We recommend keeping bettas in tanks/bowls of 1 gallon and up. Aquatic plants also should not substitute regular aquarium maintenance & water changes.
