MAPYA
Mapya started with a passion for Bagobo culture and craftsmanship.
While walking through the Fair Trade in one of the plazas in Davao City, a group of Bagobo people selling handmade bags, clothing, jewelry, and other fashion materials caught the attention of Roland & Ljay. Eventually, they come up with a concept in bringing public attention to the crafts and traditions of the Bagobo tribe. The concept is about giving the Bagobos an online platform where they can sell their authentic indigenous crafts. They also emphasize how this idea can help generate more employment and better incomes to support the Bagobo community. The founders also hope of elevating this concept to the global stage. Therefore, Mapya was born.
Why Mapya?
Mapya has several meanings. In the Bagobo term, mapya means good. Goodness for their renowned metal-craft skills, weaving abacca cloths of earth-toned hues, as well as, basket-making trimmed with beads, fibers, and horsehair. Mapya also means new. New beginnings to start and new things to create.
