Especially like those muddy, rough, slippery, or super cold roads our rally heroes take but undeniably enjoy after going through it.
Just like Mike Chen. Our famous WRC Red Bull Broadcaster and circuit racer dared himself to try to compete in a rally for the first time.
If you arenβt aware, rally and circuit are two different worlds in racing. When circuit roads are normally graveled smooth roads, rallies take place on rough terrain and bad conditions and unpredictable roads even if you prepare and have a guide beside you.
What I find intriguing about Mike Chen was how he prepared for a grueling Wales Rally GB from his going straight sideways series.
What he did -
- He asked a lot of his rally peers multiple questions.
- Went to a rally school to be certified to enter a rally race.
- He and Richard Milener took extensive notes.
- He and Richard implemented a funny little blindfold training regimen for Mike to memorize the notes.
- Had to train his body to athlete standards.
When getting into new things, it's a great thing to be prepared.
Itβs better to be proactive rather than reactive because you can manage those problems more quickly and more efficiently.
Thatβs why itβs important to keep looking for solutions to counter problems in whatever situation you are in.
In the end, Mike Chen and Milener went through a grueling race and ended up at 36th place.
But that was an amazing result considering it was Mikeβs first time.
So friends, full speed ahead in where you want to delve into.
You may not get the no.1 results but at least the best result you can achieve in your current state if you proactively prepare.
Keep on Learning, it's part of the fun!

Sim Racing vs Real Life Racing
There are four points to consider -
1. COST
Setting up a rig can seem costly especially when you want to upgrade them. The most anyone can get is a US$1000 rig.
The best of the best you can get, can average around US$ 10000.
Of course, house electric bills come into play.
Let's switch that over to real racing.
- One day of circuit testing can cost between US$ 390 to US$ 650. For only 4x 35 minute sessions.
- Average money spent on fuel can go about US$ 521.80.
- Tyre and brake pads need constant repair or replacement.
Therefore these consumables add another hundreds.
- Since it is real racing, you are more prone to crashes and that leads to extensive repair costs.
Keep in mind this is for a single day worth of real racing practice.
2. SAFETY
Clearly, sim racing takes the cake here.
I mean in sim racing the worst you can get is crashing in a simulator and thatβs all settled in a reset button.
True, if you need to find limits to your car racing ability in real life, testing it out in an actual track and car is necessary.
However, it's not a controlled environment and possible recovery bills due to injury may occur since real racing is a hazardous occupation.
Not too mention we are currently in a pandemic. Going out for practice is considered risky at the moment unfortunately.
Sim racing strives to become as real as it can get for racers and even enthusiasts to practice their ability and help push their limits through a safe place before possibly arriving at an actual race track.
3. EDUCATION
Race simulation has come a long way and has implemented professional racer needs to improve their skill and how they can get the information they need in real time.
One of these are:
- In-depth data logging facility feature allowing racers to see graphical illustrations to help them analyze their driving technique (in terms of speed, angle, gyro readings and etc.)
- Ability to investigate which car setup affects the overall of the racers car handling.
However, proper driver conduct and etiquette is better practiced in real life racing.
Conducts and etiquette in racing exists to avoid crashes since
What is Sim Racing?
First off, there are distinctions between racing games and racing simulators.
Racing games are mainly for enjoyment and the freedom to choose whatever car while playing with driving aids.
These games can be An example of this is Nintendoβs Mario Kart series.
Racing simulator or more known as βsim racingβ, is a gaming genre striving to accurately represent driving dynamics.
Such as replicating real world physics (tyre grip, traction, suspension, aerodynamics etc.) An example of these games are Assetto-Corsa and Dirt Rally.
Sim Racing can be seen as way back as 1989 and the platform has grown exponentially.
Thanks to advanced scanning technology, we see additions to even more detail in terms of tyre models, suspension geometry and accuracy in track designs.
This vast attention to detail increases demand in sim racing users. Currently professionals from F1 to WEC find the importance of sim racing to help them increase skill while not in the actual driving seat.
Especially in this time of pandemic, sim racing is ever more essential for training.
These days, anyone with a sim racing rig can compete with the best. Sometimes, even the best can be actual driving professionals.
In fact, F1 drivers such as Lando Norris are all active sim racers. Thanks to online competitions or eSports, finding the highest competition is more accessible.
