“Established on Dec. 19, 1980, through a manifesto signed by the heads of veterans organizations from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore in a meeting held in Jakarta, the Veterans Confederation of Asean Countries (Veconac) aims to "promote solidarity, closer cooperation, and understanding among veterans organizations in Asean member countries through active dialogue and interaction x x x." Beginning in 1985, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar joined the Veconac "to collectively represent and amplify the voices of veterans and former military servicemen in the region." Manila played a significant role in the crafting of the Veconac's Chapter that was presented in the Inaugural General Assembly hosted by the Legion of Veterans of the Republic of Indonesia.

On Nov. 26-30, 2023, Veconac's 35th Executive Board Meeting 2023 will be held in Manila. The major event will be hosted by the VFP at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel, with around 165 delegates and some observers from 10 countries attending. Alamillo, being the chairman of the host country will preside over the review of the resolutions for the 22nd General Assembly. Among the resolutions for adoption is the establishment of business platforms to connect veteran businessmen and businesses to foster economic cooperation across Asean and Veconac to benefit veterans of the Asean.

The Veconac being a venue for sharing of best practices of veterans, Alamillo is expected to showcase how the VFP, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office and the Veterans Memorial Medical Center have embarked on major projects and initiatives that advanced the welfare and well-being of Filipino veterans through public and private sector collaborations.

The Department of National Defense secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. is the guest of honor and speaker in the Opening Ceremony on Nov. 28, 2023. He will lead the Medal of Honor Investiture Ceremony to recognize veteran leaders who were instrumental in the attainment of Veconac's goals. The Veconac Presidency title will be conferred to Sr. Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Nguyen Van Duoc, president of the Veterans Association of Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Veconac Honorary Presidency title will be conferred posthumously on Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Rais Abin, the honorary president of LVRI and president of Veconac 2010-2012. Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Le Van Cau, director for the Department of Foreign Relations, Veterans Association of Vietnam, will receive the Veconac Medal of Honor.

Indeed, Filipino veterans and their brethren from the region should close ranks to promote the welfare of each other and of one another. Veconac and the VFP should engage men and women who are still in the active service — especially those in the senior levels of the hierarchy — to be involved in veterans affairs to which ranks they will be joining inevitably.

Because at the end of the day, no veteran should live up to his or her twilight years after serving the country, only to suffer and die with the same fate as the once proud and mighty lion who can roar no more.”

Brethren THERE is this powerful image that struck me and made me reflect on that inevitable fate that would befall anyone. And that being a destiny, it'll come. It's just a matter of time. I am referring to this picture of an aging lion, ostensively weak and sickly, surrounded by a cackle of hyenas, with tee...

We have created numerous chatgroups that empower the veterans to communicate with their comrades registered within their respective post, district and region. However, the veterans could still link with their buddies during active service as they can make a crossover in other groups in the post, district or region where their friends have settled and made residence in other parts of the country.

Among the different chatgroups we have constructed, be informed that the VFP Queries and Assistance chatgroup is very essential as it allows all VFP members to post their request for benefit assistance, follow-up if not acted upon, ask for clarification of any veteran-related topic or issue. We are encouraging all veterans to use this chatgroup for its intended purpose. All communications like text message or soft copies of supporting documents related to benefit assistance sent in this chatgroup are automatically acknowledged by the system, where the name of the senders and their cellphone numbers are recorded on the dates these were sent.

A designated Administrator to this chatgroup shall be responsible in replying to your inquiries and request for assistance. The posted communications are given high confidentiality as these are not exposed in the computer screen to be seen by unconcerned veterans.

I therefore urge everyone to use this chatgroup to enable us at the NHQ to act on all your communications expeditiously. Posting your request of assistance in other chatgroups may not be seen and acted upon by us in the NHQ as these may have been buried/covered and obscured by other topic of discussions.

I wish you all for your active participation and cooperation in the use of this chatgroup. Stay safe and COVID free.

While we are still on a lock down mode due to the COVID 19 pandemic that is sweeping not only our nation but the whole world, we want to assure you that we, your Team Pamaran is continuously exhausting all measures, working even from our homes beyond limit to be able to link with all our veterans and to extend our humble assistance. Our efforts may fail in volume and value but still, this manifest our thoughts and heartfelt compassion for all of you who are withering this crisis. Meantime, let us all continue to be safe and follow the government's guidelines. With the Lord's protection, we will emerge victorious in this battle!

VFP President Justice Manuel R Pamaran

Spot Report of Fire in the Veterans Center:

Please be informed that on or about 1640H 12 May 2020, a fire broke out in the warehouse leased by Grandeur (nature of business: importer and distributor of carpets). Due to the combustible materials the fire reached the warehouse leased by SPJ Electronics (nature of business: distributor of electronic appliances). Both are sublessees of JY and Sons
within the 88,044 sqm.leased area. Both warehouses are totally burned. Personally went to the fire scene and saw BFP fire trucks from Taguig City, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasay, and other volunteer firemen extinguishing the fire.
The VFP fire truck was in the scene of the fire before the arrival of other BFP fire trucks. Before leaving the fire scene on or about 1840H, I observed that the fire is already contained.
