So I've kind of missed every single day right after Day 1 ๐Ÿ˜… and this is one of the reasons why. I've been working on setting up my own online food business as a sideline, and I'm proud to introduce you all to a new alter ego of mine: KevJumbo.

Cooking has been my other main comfort activity during this pandemic as it makes me and loved ones happy whenever I successfully make something delicious. After a while of doing it, my girlfriend and some close friends strongly suggested that I should try selling my best dishes as a side business, and I figured why not? I've been doing test runs with friends and setting up the groundwork since August, and after plenty of positive feedback, I've now mustered the confidence to finally open it for the public.

This is the logo I made for because I wanted something that would instantly express my passion for both art and home cooking, and this is also the public image that I aspire KevJumbo to have: a little extra, a little rough around the edges, but will try his best to give you a great eating experience filled with love and care.

Stay tuned for the weekly schedule if you'd like to give my cooking a try, I'd be delighted to serve you all! ๐Ÿ˜„ And I'll try to put out more artworks soon when my schedule clears up. Just keep doing what you do, and stay safe!

Goddamn, it's insane that my fanart was shared by the official Eyedea and Abilities page and garnered so many shares and positive feedback! I'm a bit late in saying this because there was stuff I had deal with yesterday, but thank you very much for liking my art! It warms my heart to see the E&A fanbase this alive and in such solidarity ๐Ÿฅบ

If this has somehow reached those of you out there who've never heard of Eyedea your whole lives, I hope this piques your interest enough to give his songs a listen ๐Ÿ™‚

This is dope. 10/10.

I decided to join in on the fun just so I can unwind from all of the things I've been busy with recently. ๐Ÿ˜… I wasn't gonna join at first since I couldn't think of anything unique for 's theme (fish), but then I remembered a certain song from my all-time favourite musician that was perfect for the theme!

"Birth of a Fish" is a song by the late, great Eyedea (along with his partner, DJ Abilities) about one's perception of being and reality. The song is waaaay better than I can represent in this drawing of mine, so if you like this artwork, check the song out on YouTube, then listen to all of his other songs.

Mikey was an amazing person who wrote highly introspective and empathetic songs that have literally saved my life, and you would be doing yourself a great service by delving into this more personal side of hip-hop, especially during times like these when we all need a metaphorical shoulder to lean on.

Keep safe and sane during these troubled times!

17/08/2020

Hey, everyone! How are you doing? It's been two full months since the last drawing I made. I got caught up in a lot of stuff with my personal life, and I felt that I had to take a little break from art and cope with our current living conditions in more leisurely ways like video games. Sometimes, you just have to step away for a bit from the things you love so you can replenish your passion and avoid burning out. I hope you guys are able to retain or replenish your passion for the things you love too, and I hope you're still hanging on as the pandemic is not over yet.

With that said, here's a new for Einstein Cruz, who wanted to give this to his girlfriend as a birthday present. Thank you for trusting me with such an important love expression, and for helping me break my hiatus. :)

As always, for anyone who wants to make requests just like this! I missed drawing artworks, and I hope to post more content soon!

Do Depressed Artists Make Better Art? 14/05/2020

"It is very admirable to pursue absolute honesty in your work, but it can be very dangerous to think that your suffering is your only source of personal honesty. To think that this is the only way that you can express yourself openly and honestly, maybe to the point where you feel like you need to keep suffering to keep your success; to essentially fall in love with your own depression."

Ended up working on this until 4AM 'cause it would be stuck in my mind if I tried to sleep without finishing it ๐Ÿ˜… I wanted to try giving the black and white uploads some more fleshed-out shading so it wouldn't look so incomplete compared to the colored ones. I also tried to use softer lines just to see how it looks. Let me know if you like it better this way!

Made from Grandmother's China. The artist, Glen Martin Taylor writes a revealing background that speaks to this piece:

Itโ€™s been almost a year since my mother died. And in opening the grief, I have mostly grieved for her childhood. It was cruel. I am sad for my motherโ€™s life. Her father was a angry man, forced to leave a good life in his own country where his family was important, and to immigrate to a place where he was looked down on as a โ€œstupid foreignerโ€ because he struggled with English, bitter until the day he died. And my grandmother, in a story I heard many times, would control her six children with drama, threatening to throw herself in the nearby river if they didnโ€™t behave, my mother recalled her and her siblings chasing their mother to the river yelling โ€œNo, Mama, no!โ€ My grandmother was also a stranger in a strange land forced as a child to leave her parents to come here. And then there was a picture of purgatory hanging above my motherโ€™s childhood bed, just a tiny girl, warned every night that she was going to burn in hell if she wasnโ€™t a good girl. And that is how my grandparents were also raised.

It took me a very long time to learn about and maybe understand my grandparents. It was a life of survival, when love was only expressed with food on the table and clothes on your back. I had to learn that there arenโ€™t โ€œgoodโ€ or โ€œbadโ€ people. Just damaged people, broken people. And when I accepted that, some forgiveness slowly followed, and some compassion for everyone of us. And maybe grief isnโ€™t just a โ€œprocessโ€ maybe itโ€™s a gift to be opened.

A Powerful Statement.

Six Fanarts Challenge: Batch 1
(Six Favourite Battle Rappers, all requested by Klarize Starling )
Entry # 2 - Sak Maestro

For the second entry of my , I went with my next favourite battle rapper, Sak Maestro - Unofficial. Sak is a really chill dude, but a beast on the battle ring and could easily make a case for himself as FlipTop's true king if he went all out. He makes amazing music too, and I'd be really excited to see him drop an album!

I had so much fun making this entry. I decided to go Samurai Champloo with the color scheme and applied some of the new coloring techniques that I learned. I'll do my best to keep improving with each fanart!

Man, I had way too much fun making this, I didn't even notice it was already 2AM when I finished the lineart ๐Ÿ˜… I marathon'd Sak battles in the background while making this, didn't think I'd actually finish all of it at the same time I finished this haha.

As always, stay safe out there, take care of your loved ones, and spend time on the things that keep you mentally healthy.

Six Fanarts Challenge: Batch 1
(Six Favourite Battle Rappers, all requested by Klarize Starling)
Entry #1 - Loonie

I decided to kickstart this by drawing my all-time favourite battle rapper, . First became a fan of him back in 2010 because of FlipTop Battle League, until I eventually started listening to his music and found out that he's equally amazing in that regard. Critical Condition has to be my favourite local hiphop album!

I definitely still need to get better at coloring, but I hope you like this fanart! Let me know what you think in the comments down below. Open to commissions, just send a DM!

This scene is from a manga that I'm still working on. The scene depicts how the abuse that the main character -- a misunderstood delinquent flunkie -- goes through everyday has manifested into a dark spectre whose roots have pierced into his heart.

Pain grabs hold of us, taking our innocence hostage until we're forced to disconnect from our feelings in order to cope. It can leave cracks on anyone, from the weakest of us, to the seemingly toughest of us.

Apologies for the lack of activity in the page, I haven't really been in the mood to draw lately. I missed the deadline for SMA14, COVID-19 has left all of us living in f**ked-up times, and there's much in life for me to ponder about. I'm trying to get back in the groove of drawing again, so I asked for 6 fan art requests in my personal account, and now I gotta draw three batches of these. ๐Ÿ˜…

Stay safe and sane out there. Make sure to express gratitude to your loved ones and to the frontliners working hard to keep things running right now; and look out for the people around you.

Manga update: I'm really behind schedule right now, but I'm really enjoying the learning process of digital manga-making, so whether I make the deadline or not, I'll happily see this manga through to the end. ๐Ÿ˜Š

One thing I wasn't able to practice before I went digital was my shading. I recently learned that drawing arrows representing the light source helps me visualize how the lighting is supposed to interact with the contours of the human face (and other solid objects), rather than just imagining it from my head.

I'm really happy with how this page turned out (check the stories for the full page), and I'll strive to keep getting better at every step of the way. I wish all of you well, and I'll be back with more updates, but for now I'll

I'm proud to announce that I'm finally done sketching my SMA13 entry! From tomorrow until before the January deadline, I'll be going digital to make the official version of this manga. I'll also try to give you guys a preview of the whole story soon!

Gotta say, I'm really excited to transition to digital for the first time. ๐Ÿ˜

Found this in Pandayan Bookshop while buying mechanical pencil lead, and I picked it up on a whim. I gotta say, it was quite the find. A 126-page one-shot story, the concept of the story was pretty cool. The art was extremely good, with every page full of gritty detail that really made its cyberpunk setting come to life. The page layout was at times chaotic to read through (though this probably has more to do with me being used to manga pacing and layout, where there's a singular focus on panel-to-panel events), but it's that same chaotic page design that makes it so artistic.

It was a really fun comic to read and a good source of inspiration for my own comic endeavors, and I'm glad I picked it up. ๐Ÿ˜

It all starts with a youthful dream, and it takes a lot of practice to keep that dream going. If you don't feel like you're good enough now, don't think about how inferior you are to your peers. Think about how good you can be if you don't stop and just keep trying to improve.

The dream goes on!

My loot from Day 1 of Komikon Grande 2019 (OFFICIAL). It was my first time attending a Komikon event and I had so much fun. I wasn't there for long, but I learned much about the hustle of independent comic artists like these guys. This was as much support as I could give with the money I had that day, but rest assured that I'll be showing more support as I continue to immerse in our local comic scene. And I'm hoping that soon, I'll also be sitting in my own booth and making a living out of my art. ๐Ÿ˜

ACROSS TIME | SMA11 Winners 22/11/2019

I'm 2/3 done sketching my SMA13 manga, and from December onwards, I'll be working on making the finished product digitally. For now, I want to post about my SMA11 entry.

Across Time was my first officially finished manga as Panic Rayne. I know the story isn't particularly original, but it's something I was really excited to draw about because I wanted to make a story about my dog, and challenge the limitations of the tournament rules. I made the whole thing traditionally on paper, and with the limited capabilities of scanners here in the Philippines, and my lack of time (and knowledge) to do digital editing (screentones, shadings, etc.) before the deadline, I realized the disadvantages of that. That's why my new entry will be fully digital.

I didn't get the win in the end (the link headline is a bit misleading), but still, I'm very proud of making this, and I aim to keep getting better with the next ones. ๐Ÿ˜

ACROSS TIME | SMA11 Winners My favourite part was drawing the T-Rex and the final page. I can only draw for a limited time per day because I have a full-time job, so I've been thinking about those pages for an entire month and I'm happy with how it turned out.

Sound & Movement: Writing True Manga Brilliance 17/11/2019

As comics and manga are static art mediums, it takes a lot of skill for an author to convey the illusion of motion to readers as they go from page to page. An author's mastery of these techniques is the reason why some manga are easier to digest than others, and why reading a story on paper can be just as exciting as watching its flashily-animated adaptation.
