1898 MALOLOS MENU.
On September 29, 1898 a fiesta was held in Malolos to celebrate the solemn ratification of the declaration of Philippine Independence made in Kawit on June 12, 1898.
The menu for the fiesta had a cover in the shape of a Philippine flag (Left). When opened , it revealed the menu in French (Middle) as reproduced in Harper's History of the War in the Philippines (1900).
For close to a century, what we knew of the Malolos Banquet was based on the Harper's reproduction of the LUNCH menu (Middle), the DINNER menu (Right) often discussed like common knowledge today, was not so until I wrote about it in the 1990's. The menu was hiding in plain sight in the Museo de de Oro [Gold Museum it is not :)] , Xavier University. People saw it long before me, they walked by it, but did not stop to NOTICE it, to read what was on it.
My Inquirer column today makes reference to reviews and reportage on the fiesta that appeared, days later, in the anti-Filipino newspaper "El Cometa" and "La Republica Filipina" official paper of the Malolos Government.
