EXPLAINER: What’s going on with Marvel and their VFX Artists?

"Marvel genuinely works you really hard. I’ve had co-workers sit next to me, break down, and start crying.”

On July 26, a Vulture article from the perspective of a VFX artist narrated the experience of working with the biggest franchise in the world — and it's a grueling affair.

Due to the sheer number of movies and television shows, Marvel requires its artists to work for 7 days a week on an average of 64 hours (on a good week).

Marvel can command a lot of sway in the bidding wars of VFX houses because of their popularity. It also means they can prioritize cheaper bids, leading to lesser pay for artists.

They can do reshoots and big changes on tentpole films, even as the release date draws near, without any regard for the VFX teams working on them.

The artist in the article identified that the lack of a 'Director of Photography' involved in films and the relative inexperience of Marvel directors with VFX bred shoddy and rushed sequences — case in point, the final fight in Black Panther.

Lastly, the VFX artist gave Kevin Feige, and the industry as a whole, some notes:

-Train Marvel Directors on VFX
-VFX Unionization in consideration of the impacts of bids on employees.
-To quote a hypothetical Cap quote: "Stop being a bully."
