Even the simplest acts of honesty can be powerful. Honesty is being loyal to what is right; living with courage; giving life to the ideal. The simplest, smallest acts of honesty will receive grace to grow, because they have the power to rise as praise to God and bring Him pleasure.

From undisputed historical records, let me weave a story of the Shroudโs journey to its present home, Turin.
Writing to Pope Clement VI on April 10 (or 16), 1349, French knight Geoffrey de Charny requests permission to build a church, named St Maryโs of Lirey. According to the 1380s "D'Arcis Memorandum," the first known expositions of the Shroud are held in Lirey. Large pilgrim crowds come. Parisโs Cluny Museum still keeps an extant souvenir medallion from this period (see photo).
Bishop Pierre d'Arcis of Troyes in 1389 describes the cloth claimed as the true Shroud that wrapped Jesus's body as bearing the double imprint of a crucified man. The next year, a Papal bull grants new indulgences to visitors of St. Mary of Lireyโs relics, including the Shroud.
Fearing marauders, the Shroud is kept in a de Charny castle in 1418. 15thC archives of Mons record Margaret de Charny protecting โwhat is called the Holy Shroud of Our Lord.โ In 1453, the Shroud ownership changes to Savoy Duke Louis I, in exchange for two castles given to Margaret.
According to 17thC chroniclers, yearly expositions of the Shroud are held at this time in a meadow called the Prรฉ du Seigneur (Lordโs Meadow). A St Chapelle Church inventory describes the Shroud as "enveloped in a red silk drape, and kept in a case covered with crimson velours, decorated with silver-gilt nails, and locked with a golden key."
Accompanying the Savoys as their Court journeys from castle to castle, the Shroud finally gets a permanent home through an elaborate ceremony in 1502 at the Royal Chapel at Chambรฉry Castle. A 1532 fire melts the Shroudโs silver reliquary. The Shroud is preserved but for a corner damaged by molten silver. Poor Clare nuns repair it. Their foundress is Yolande, wife of Duke Amaedeus (Louisโs successor), who in the same year is said to have instituted the Cult of the Shroud.
In 1578, upon the Shroudโs transfer to Turin, it is welcomed with gun salutes, processions, and public exhibitions, and Agostino Cusano describes it as โtestimony to its own authenticityโ. A print marking that occasionโs 30th anniversary is preserved in London's British Museum.
In Turin, the Shroud witnesses royal weddings, visiting Emperors, Popes, Cardinals and like dignitaries, treaties ending conflicts, swells of pilgrims and grateful citizens delivered from a plague - this last occasion commemorated by art: a painted copy of the Shroud extractum ex originali (gotten from the original), preserved at the Castillo de Garcimunoz to this time. On June 1st, 1694, the Shroud is solemnly brought into the Guarini Chapel where it remains almost uninterruptedly for over three centuries now.
Are you wondering: why does this story begin in 1349, whilst the Shroud is said to be Jesusโs burial cloth? Well, I said undisputed history, remember? There are other kinds of history.
Read about it in the next article, out on 21 May.
Peace be with you!

Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who are truthful, His delight. - Proverbs 12:22
A Christian should be a person whose word is truthful and dependable. If he signs a contract, he should meet the terms of the contract. If he makes a promise, he should keep it. Others should know he is a man of his word. Such honesty in word and deed delights the Lord.

"๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐: The Cross is the word through which God has responded to evil in the world. Sometimes it may seem as though God does not react to evil, as if He is silent.
And yet, God has spoken, He has replied, and His answer is the Cross of Christ: a word which is love, mercy, forgiveness. It reveals a judgment, namely that God, in judging us, loves us.
Remember this: God, in judging us, loves us. If I embrace his love then I am saved, if I refuse it, then I am condemned, not by him, but my own self, because God never condemns, he only loves and saves. โ Pope Francis
May we draw from the cross the power to be humble, the strength to be meek, and the guidance to be true always.
