CLSU’s Jose Emmanuel Mico Represents BA Literature Program at 6th Japan Science Communication Forum
Fukuoka, Japan — Five students from Central Luzon State University (CLSU) represented the university and the Philippines at the 6th Japan Science Communication (SciCom) Forum, hosted at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, from October 22 to 24, 2024. Among them was Jose Emmanuel Mico, a CLSU’s Bachelor of Arts in Literature student, who took on the unique opportunity to highlight the role of literary perspectives in the field of science communication.
Mico, along with his fellow CLSU delegates, joined researchers, journalists, and media professionals, all united in exploring ways to make scientific knowledge more accessible and engaging for diverse audiences. Representing the BA Literature program, Mico brought a viewpoint on the power of arts in sciences and communication that emphasizes the importance of connecting scientific ideas to everyday experiences through narratives.
Reflecting on his experience, Mico noted, “As the only art student in this delegation, I thought about how I can reconcile the science of communication with its artistic nature. This may be a basic thought for some but I’ve only ever seen this interaction reside in the ideal world, so at least from my perspective as a literature major it was novel and eye opening.”
The delegation’s participation underscored CLSU’s commitment to promoting global leadership in science communication. Mico and his fellow students are now poised to bring fresh insights and approaches back to the Philippines, aiming to foster a scientifically literate society through the power of storytelling and accessible communication.
Milestone Achieved in Dumagat Gastronomy Project with Visit to Gabaldon
The “Growing the Literary Wealth: Anthology of Gastronomic Literature and Practices of the Dumagat in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija” project marked a significant milestone on October 29, 2024, with a visit to Gabaldon. Led by Dr. Mercedita M. Reyes from Central Luzon State University College of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of English and Humanities, the project team aims to document and preserve the culinary traditions of the Dumagat community. Key project staff members include Patricia Anne M. Martinez, Sharina Carla S. Merculio, Alliah Samantha P. Sugue, Karryl Angelie A. Amis, and Cynthia Lyn Curada.
The visit follows the successful finalization of essential agreements, including the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP) documentation, ensuring that the project adheres to ethical research standards and respects the traditions and rights of the Dumagat people. Previously, the team sought a Certification Precondition (CP) from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Regional Office III, as advised by the NCIP Nueva Ecija Provincial Office (NCIP NEPO). This certification is crucial for the project to proceed with cultural sensitivity and respect for the Dumagat community.
During the visit, the research team met with representatives from the Dumagat community, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Gabaldon, the Nueva Ecija Provincial Tourism Office, and NCIP officials to lay the groundwork for the upcoming fieldwork. The project will employ various research methods, including focus group discussions, one-on-one interviews, participant observation, and immersion to capture authentic gastronomic knowledge.
Over the next few weeks, the team will work toward producing an anthology of the Dumagat’s gastronomic literature and practices, alongside a scholarly article that contributes to the academic understanding of indigenous culinary traditions. The team’s commitment to ethical research and cultural preservation highlights the value of community involvement and respect for Indigenous Knowledge Systems in capturing the richness of the Dumagat culinary heritage.
