Spices and Seasonings

Because we want our food to become as delicious as possible, the use of black pepper and salt takes the lead in flavoring our dishes. An article in the Epicurious Website says that it's not enough to simply sprinkle a little salt on your food at the end of cooking, we need to season a dish throughout the cooking process: boiling water is salted; sautéed vegetables are seasoned while cooking; meat is sprinkled with salt and pepper before cooking; and dishes are finished with a final seasoning to taste. Each of these steps helps infuse flavor throughout the cooking process, so that the final dish is as delicious as possible.

But to obtain the best flavor, use of fresh spices and seasoning is a must. Fresh whole black peppercorns should be cracked and crushed right before use. Hence, the need for a good pepper and salt grinder to save time and effort in manually smashing and grinding the pepper and salt.

Black Pepper

It is the most common spice on earth. It is so widely used that almost all savory dishes are flavored with it and sometimes even sweet dishes or drinks have it.

Black pepper is native to South Asia and Southeast Asia and has been known to Indian cooking since 2000 BCE. During the Roman conquest and trade with India, they found the spice, fell in love with it, and brought it back to Europe. Peppercorns were a much-prized trade good, often referred to as "black gold" and used as a form of commodity money.

Black peppercorns were found stuffed in the nostrils of Ramesses II, placed there as part of the mummification rituals shortly after his death in 1213 BCE.
