The province of Nueva Vizcaya is known for being a major producer of a wide variety of agricultural commodities to include tomato. Tomato is a very popular and lucrative agri-commodity due to its numerous uses and nutritional value. This encourages farmers to produce during the regular planting season that results to oversupply. During its peak season, prices fall too low thus, causing a lot of loss especially to small growers.

Dominador “Dom” M. Calub Jr., 28 years old and a farmer’s son who hails from Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya, saw a silver lining on the oversupply. He then thought of a direct solution by turning tomato into a product that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Through the 4-H Aritao Committee on Vegetable Food Development and Processing, he studied the potential of tomato ice cream and DMC Vegie Ice Cream came into fruition. It is absolutely a “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” moment but for his case, when life gives you a lot of tomatoes, make tomato ice cream.

The Young Farmers Challenge Program came at the perfect moment. Dom successfully won in the provincial level thereby garnering Php 50,000.00. It opened up opportunities for him to further develop his product and make it competitive in the market. He did not only reduce the bulk seasonal loss of tomato during its peak season but also added value to the product. The acceptability of the tomato ice cream showed its potential as it has received numerous positive feedbacks from the consuming public.

Right now, he employs one regular processor and two part-timers to help him in the business. They process twice a month and they can process up to two tons of tomatoes when supply is abundant. The ice cream is available in cups which weigh eight ounces. His products are available in restaurants in Aritao namely LJ Eatery, Selma’s Eatery and Stone 8 Farm and Restaurant. He sells an average of 8,000 cups monthly. Because of this, he can financially provide for himself and his family. He was also able to buy additional materials to improve the operations of his enterprise.

He is beyond grateful to the Department of Agriculture and the Office of Senator Imee Marcos because through the YFC program, his ideas fused with hard work and tenacity turned into reality. There are indeed many trials in farming but being the president of the 4H Club in their municipality, he vows to be a role model and continue to encourage his fellow youth to engage in agriculture. As a young farmer, he thinks that the youth can greatly help the community by learning modern farming methods to maintain the adequate supply of food in every Filipino household.

Two 4-h'ers from Darapidap participated the simultaneous exam for the YFFIT and got Validated by ATI Region 2 focal person Mrs. Emergin Nicolas together with the Staffs of Magro Aritao Mrs.Divina Gracia Peralta and Mr.Alexis Gapasin....

During the dialogue of pres. Calub and Mrs. Ansing pres Calub ask for more projects and Trainings for the youths of Aritao and mrs. Ansing pledge to help the club and boost more agri projects for 4-H Club Aritao.

Ang 4-H Club Aritao sa pakikipagtulungan sa kagawaran ng Pangingisda ay nagsagawa ng pagsasanay sa Pagproproseso ng Isda, ang nasabing aktibidad ay pinangunahan ni Pres. Calub kasama ang mga Staff ng Magro Aritao at ng mga Staff ng Kagawaran ng Pangisngisda. Ang aktibidad ay nagdulot ng labis na kasiyahan sa mga dumalo.

The Filipino Young Farmers Internship Program in Taiwan is now accepting 3rd batch applicants going to taiwan!!!!

What are you waiting for chase your fate in Taiwan!!!!!

Implementing Guidelines:
1. Young Filipino farmer who is an out of school youth (OSY);
2. Male or female, single, 18-36 years old at the time of application;
3. Can be a son or daughter of a farmer or fisher;
4. Can be a son or daughter of Learning Site for Agriculture or Farm School cooperators;
5. Has existing land regardless of size and status of ownership;
6. Has no live-in partner or child;
7. High school graduate (senior high school level), undergraduate if college level, and technical or vocational graduate;
8. Not employed in any job at the time of application;
9. Not related to any ATI employee by affinity or consanguinity, until 3rd degree;
10. Must have at least one (1) year accumulated farming experience at the time of application;
11. Have no overdue obligations from the ATI at the time of application;
12. Has good community standing;
13. Has good communication skills and English proficiency;
14. With proof of not having physical deformities;
15. Willing to learn Mandarin and new technologies;
16. With a valid Philippine passport for at least two (2) or five (5) years validity;
17. Not a recipient of ATI's other International Exchange Programs;
18. No previous travel to other countries related to Internship (i.e. Japan and Taiwan);
19. Passed the following medical examination to be done in diagnostic clinics, hospitals, or laboratories accredited by the Department of Health (DOH): a) dental examination, b) chest x-ray for tuberculosis, c) stool examination for parasites, d) serological test for syphilis, e) proof of positive measles and rubella antibody, f) examination for Hansen's disease, g) skin examination for Hepatitis B and HIV or AIDS, h) ECG exam, and i) drug and neuro-psychological tests; and
20. Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time of application.

The Department of Agriculture regional field office thru High Value Crop Development Program awarded a mini tiller to 4-h Club Aritao, this aims to help every organization and barangay to have their own Vegetable Garden to attain food sufficiency.

Nakilala ko si 4H dahil sa pag hihikayat nito sa mga kabataan patungkol sa agrikultura at
nakilala ko din ito sa aking pinsan which is siya yung nang enganyo sakin para makilahok sa 4H club, bilang isang Youth marami ang naitulong ng 4H sakin sa pamamagitan ng ibat ibang uri ng programa, sa ngayon wala pa namang nabago sa buhay ko, isa ako sa napiling na maging representative ng Region 2 dito sa taiwan bilang Filipino Young Farmers Intern, dito palang mag sisimula nga aking unang hakbang para mabago/umunlad ang aking buhay.
