ASU receives WURI 2024 recognition

The Aklan State University (ASU) made it among the Top 100 higher education institutions (HEIs) in 3 of the 13 categories in the 2024 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) released yesterday June 7, 2024.

ASU is Rank 20 in Industrial Application (A3) Top 100, Rank 38 in Crisis Management (A5) Top 100, and Rank 66 in Social Responsibility (A6) Top 100 among the numerous global universities who underwent the assessment.

The WURI assesses HEIs' real contributions to industry and society using the following 13 categories as bases: Student Support and Engagement (A1); Student Mobility and Openness (A2); Industrial Application (A3); Entrepreneurial Spirit (A4); Crisis Management (A5); Social Responsibility (A6); Generative AI Application; and, Support for Global Resilience (A8).

HEIs were also assessed on how they carried out innovations in terms of: Leadership (B1); Funding (B2); Infrastructure/Technology (B3); Symbol (promotion) (B4); and Culture/Values (B5).

BSED English research article scores 9th int'l journal citation

The article, "TikTok and grammar skills in English: Perspectives of English major students", penned by Nicole I. Revesencio, Rodemie R. Alonsagay, Luzlyn I. Dominguez, Donna Mae I. Hormillosa, Clint Hector I. Ibea, Mesty Mae S. Montaño, with Dr. Ersyl T. Biray as adviser, scored another international citation in the article, "Reinvigorating the Post-COVID Gen Z English Major", authored by Gaby Bedetti of Eastern Kentucky University and published in the May 2024 issue of the Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence, 8(1) by the Utah State University, Logan, Utah, USA.

The cited article by Revesencio et al. was originally published in the International Journal of Multidisciplinary: Applied Business and Education Research, Volume 3, Issue 11 in November 2022 by Future Science based in Jawa Timur, Indonesia.

Said article was presented as a paper during the 1st Future English Language Teachers (FELT) forum conducted by the College of Teacher Education as a final activity for the Language Research course.

Malonisio joins eminent speakers for 'Halo-Halo' fair

Dr. Manuel O. Malonisio, newly-promoted Professor V of the College of Teacher Education teams up with distinguished speakers from national and international institutions for the "Halo-Halo: The Filipino Mixed Methods Fair" slated on May 21-22, 2024 at the University of Sto. Tomas Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC) Auditorium and on Zoom. This two-day onsite and online symposium is organized by UST's Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSED).

Malonisio will lead the discussion on Disciplinal Education Delivery, with Dr. Annie A. Tumitit from Ifugao State University in Plenary 1 - Filipinos' Conduct of Mixed Methods Disciplinal Breakout Session 1.

Plenary speakers include Prof. Loraine Cook, President, Mixed Methods International Research Association (MMIRA), and Dr. Elizabeth G. Creamer, Former President of MMIRA.

Aside from the discussion on mixed methods design, other topics are reflections on doing mixed methods, particularly on knowledge generation and problem solving, and mixed methods as arsenal to determine Philippine solutions in varied disciplines.

Orbista, Renacido join IIARI journal editorial board

Dr. John R. Orbista, Instructor I and Program Chairperson of MAED English Language Teaching of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) was named as member of the Editorial Board of the Industry and Academic Research Review (IARR), the proceedings publication of the International Conference on Multidisciplinary Industry and Academic Research (ICMIAR) conducted annually by the Institute of Industry and Academic Research Incorporated (IIARI).

Meanwhile, John Marvin D. Renacido, 3rd year Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), major in English student of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) was qualified by the IIARI to be the newest member of its International Student Research Review (ISRR) Junior Editorial Board released on May 3, 2024.

Renacido is the 5th CTE BSED English student who qualified as member of the ISRR junior editorial board. The other BSED English students who had been with the journal are Jayben C. Mati-ong, 2nd year; Imee Dela Torre, Aldrin H. De Claro, Jr., and Klyde Francis R. Dela Cruz, who are all on their 4th year.

ISRR is a peer-reviewed open-access proceedings publication of the annual International Students Research Congress (ISRC) organized by the IIARI in collaboration with its institutional partners.

ASU-CTE has an existing BOR-approved Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IIARI.

BSED alumni, 2 others earn ATOM awards

Two Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) graduates of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) are among the awardees who will be honored during the 2024 Aklan's Ten Outstanding Mentors (ATOM) Award Ceremonies on April 27, 2024 at the Tangalan Sports and Cultural Center, Tangalan, Aklan.

Mr. Joecyl Philip V. Lauron ranked 3rd among this year's ATOM awardees who qualified after a rigorous selection process by the technical panel. Recently, he was also recognized during the annual Department of Education (DepEd) "Pagkilaea" as Outstanding Master Teacher Awardee in the Division of Aklan. He is a BSED major in English Cum Laude graduate of Batch 2011, and is now employed as Master Teacher I at the Batan Academy (A National School) in the District of Batan, Aklan.

"I am very happy to be an awardee, super grateful...I feel like a hero in my district as this is the first time to have an ATOM awardee from our municipality," said Mr. Lauron. "I am a very proud graduate of ASU main campus."

Dr. Mikko Jan D. Lopez, a BSED Physical Science major graduate in 2012, is currently a Senior High School Teacher II at the Regional Science High School for Region VI, District of Kalibo, Aklan.

"The news made my day!", exclaimed Dr. Lopez. "Being an ATOM awardee boosts my morale to continue doing my best to extend more my mentorship skills not just to my students and faculty in RSHS VI but in the DepEd Aklan," he added.

Meanwhile, two other ASU alumni awardees are from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). Ms. Leonelyn Dolloso - Monleon was a Bachelor of Arts (AB), major in Mathematics graduate in 2007, and is currently Teacher I at the Loctuga National High in the District of Libacao, Aklan. While, Ms. Dionadith Gay Honrado - Isturis, currently a Master Teacher I at the Lezo Integrated School, District of Lezo, Aklan, was an institutional scholar and graduated Cum Laude from her AB major in English degree in 2008. Both were active members of the Eamigas editorial board during their college years in Banga, Aklan.

BSED English students now int'l journal editors

Aldrin H. De Claro, Jr. and Klyde Francis R. Dela Cruz, 4th year Bachelor of Secondary (BSED), major in English students of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) in ASU, Banga, Aklan are now members of the Junior Editorial Board of the International Student Research Review (ISRR), an international journal published by the Institute of Industry and Academic Research, Incorporated (IIARI).

De Claro and Dela Cruz qualified and passed the rigorous screening of applicants by the IIARI jury composed research experts and academic practitioners who serve as consultants, and fellows of IIARI. They will be working with the editors of the ISRR who will review and recommend the publication of articles submitted to the journal.

The International Student Research Review (ISRR) is an open-access peer-reviewed proceedings publication of the International Students Research Congress (ISRC), an annual conference that gathers together student researchers from different countries of the world. It fosters research culture and academic excellence to high school and undergraduate (technical/vocational, college and university) students. It accepts articles from high school and undergraduate students for publication.

Last year, two BSED English students also made it as Junior Fellows of the IIARI. Jayben C. Mati-ong and Imee B. Dela Torre were among the first seven high school and undergraduate students chosen to be the counterpart of the national and international fellows of this organization. As such, Mati-ong and Dela Torre made valuable contributions in the second international students research congress held virtually on January 19-20, 2024. Now, they will be working with De Claro and Dela Cruz as junior editors of the ISRR.

To note, IIARI has an active memorandum of understanding with the ASU-CTE.

Nabayra presents paper in Tokyo conference

Dr. Jahfet N. Nabayra, a prolific Mathematics instructor of the College of Teacher Education (CTE), presented the paper, "On-The-Go Android-Based Learning Tool for Mathematics Learning in the Challenged Areas", during the 10th Asian Conference on Education and International Development/14th Asian Conference on Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences/10th Asian Conference on Aging and Gerontology (ACEID/ACP/AGen) of the 2024 International Academic Forum (IAFOR) Spring Conference Series held at the Toshi Center Hotel, Tokyo, Japan on March 25-29, 2024.

His attendance to the event was made possible through the support from the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), and the Aklan State University (ASU).

The article explored the mathematics learning experiences of the geographically challenged students during the pandemic. It utilized the Educational Design Research (ERD) with phenomenography as research method in the analysis stage.

This international conference gathered together 747 delegates from 63 countries, with 448 onsite presenters and 183 online presenters divided into 5 streams: aging and gerontology; mental health; psychology and education; teaching experiences, pedagogy, practice and praxis; and learning experiences, student learning and learner diversity. This year's event organized by the IAFOR was in partnership with the IAFOR Research Centre at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) at Osaka University, Japan, and IAFOR's Global Partners.

Malonisio, 2 MAED graduates earn IPOPHL copyright registrations

Dr. Manuel O. Malonisio, Associate Professor V, together with Ms. Mae-An D. Rigo, and Mr. Christian F. Tambong, Master of Arts in Education (MAED), major in Mathematics graduates, received their certificates of copyright registration for the research outputs from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Taguig City, Pasig, Rizal, Philippines.

The "Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale in Aklanon" by Ms. Rigo, who graduated from the MAED Mathematics degree in the 1st semester, AY 2023-2024, and co-authored by Malonisio, received the copyright registration certificate on June 26, 2024 signed by Atty. Emerson G. Guyo, Director IV of the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights of IPOPHL.

Similarly, the module publication, "Statistics and Probability: A Remediating Strategic Intervention Material (RSIM) for Grade 10" written by Tambong, who received his MAED in Mathematics diploma on the 2nd semester of AY 2022-2023, with Malonisio as co-author, was issued the copyright registration on January 29, 2024 by Atty. Guyo of IPOPHL.

Both publications were classified under Class A (books, pamphlets, articles, e-books, audio books, comics, novels, and other writings), and copies are deposited at the National Library of the Philippines (NLP).

CTE MAED-IA graduate secures Outstanding Research Award in int'l conference

Mr. Mark Anthony R. Meñez, Master of Arts in Education (MAED), major in Industrial Arts graduate of the Teacher Education Department in Aklan State University - Kalibo campus in 2023, with Dr. Ersyl T. Biray as co-author, secured the Outstanding Research Award in Technological Innovation track for the paper, "Compressive Strength of Concrete Hollow Blocks (CHB) with Upcycled Plastics as Partial Replacement for Choker Aggregates" during the 1st International Conference on Management, Education and Innovation (ICMEI) held on January 20, 2024 via Zoom.

The conference which was organized by the Institute of Industry and Academic Research Incorporated (IIARI), in collaboration with Northwestern Visayan Colleges (NVC), had 39 papers presented by researchers from different national and international colleges and universities.

Certificates of recognition, presentation, and participation were awarded and presented to the winners, presenters and co-authors, respectively after the conference.

Mr. Mark Jones M. Delgado, CTE instructor served as Technical Working Group member and master of ceremonies of the conference.

BSEd student-researchers present papers at ISRC 2024

Presenting their research papers among the 36 entries, student-researchers from the College of Teacher Education (CTE) in the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) major in English program participated in the 1st International Student Research Congress (ISRC) 2024 via Zoom Virtual Conference today, January 19.

With the theme "Nurture the New Gen Research Leaders," the following are the four research papers presented by BSEd lV English students:

'Literary Genres Preferred by English Pre-Service Teachers in Teaching Literature in a State University' authored by Imee B. Dela Torre, Denise Miraflores, Lea Marie N. Alcaraz, Ana May T. Cabaluna, and Mark Jones M. Delgado, CTE instructor and secondary author.

'Online and Onsite Language Learning Differences Through the Lens of English Major Undergraduates in a State University' authored by Klyde Francis R. Dela Cruz, Marvin James G. Esing, Riza D. Villanueva, Wiljoy B. Nazareta, and Jannine M. Rafael, CTE instructor and secondary author.

'Transition from Online to Onsite Learning: Standpoints of College Students in a Government-funded Institution' authored by Angie Rose M. Fernando, Alexandra Shekinah I. Apolinario, Aizel Nor R. Casuncad, Bash Raibon De Juan, and Ersyl T. Biray, CTE professor and secondary author.

'Genre of College Students' Social Media Posts: An Analysis' authored by Aldrin H. De Claro, Reyshien A. Dela Cruz, Kim Louie N. Navarra, Rose-Ann H. Vicente, and Ersyl T. Biray as secondary author.

"The experience offers me with a holistic development that is very important in pursuing academics researches and studies for future endeavor," De Claro stated.

Moreover, the paper titled 'Online and Onsite Language Learning Differences Through the Lens of English Major Undergraduates in a State University' earned recognition as the Outstanding Research Paper and Best Presentation, with Klyde Francis R. Dela Cruz honored as the Best Presenter.

“I felt so much pride and sense of validation for our efforts as a team. At the same time, I was so thankful because it was such a big recognition to receive. All our hard work has been paid off,” said Dela Cruz.

Jayben C. Mati-ong, BSEd II-English student and ISRC Conference Junior Chair, delivered his welcome remarks and served as one of the conference board committee members.

Meanwhile, Imee B. Dela Torre and Jarizz C. Sayawan, both from BSEd IV English and Ro Sueo Publication staff, served as junior session chair and Master of Ceremonies, respectively.

The said conference was organized by the Institute of Industry and Academic Research, Inc., in collaboration with the Santo Tomas College of Agriculture, Sciences, and Technology (STCAST).

CTE students' articles published, get citations in int'l journals

Research articles written by graduate and undergraduate students of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) were published and cited in separate research studies included in peer-reviewed international journals.

The article, "Humor as a Teaching and Learning Strategy in a Language Classroom", authored by Khrys Ianah R. Isagan, Vincent R. Enecito, Jim Paul S. Ungsod, Caren N. Nagal, and Ersyl T. Biray was published in the December 2023 issue of The Research Probe (Vol. 3, Issue 2), the peer-reviewed conference proceedings publication of the recently concluded International Research Congress (IRC) by the Institute of Industry and Academic Research Inc. (IIARI). Said article was one of the top finalists in the undergraduate category of the IRC 2023 participated in by high school, college, and graduate school students from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. Each of the authors were acknowledged by the publisher with certificates of publication.

Meanwhile, one article, "Error Analysis in Spoken English among Grade 12 Students" written by Fresalyn B. Honrado, Master of Arts in Education (MAED), major in English graduate, and Dr. Ersyl T. Biray, retired professor of CTE, which appeared in the International Journal of Educational Management and Development Studies (Vol. 3, Issue 1) in 2022, was cited in a published paper in the same journal in its Volume 4, Issue No. 2 dated June 2023.

Likewise, the research paper, "TikTok and Grammar Skills in English: Perspectives of English Major Students" penned by Nicole I. Revesencio, Rosamie R. Alonsagay, Luzlyn I. Dominguez, Donna Mae I. Hormillosa, Clint Hector I. Ibea, and Mesty Mae S. Montaño, Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), major in English graduates in 2023, with Dr. Ersyl T. Biray as corresponding author, was twice cited in international peer-reviewed journals. The first citation was in an article published in Dialektika (Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, dan Budaya) of the Universitas Kristen Indonesia in Jakarta, with ISSN: 2338-2635/e-ISSN: 2798-1371. And, the second citation was in an article included in the Journal of English Education and Linguistics (Vol. 4, No. 2) published on December 28, 2023.

BSEd English student-researchers article appears in peer-reviewed journal

The article, "Humor as a Teaching and Learning Strategy in a Language Classroom" authored by Khrys Ianah R. Isagan, Vincent R. Enecito, Jim Paul S. Ungsod, and Caren R. Nagal, BSEd 4 - English students, with Dr. Ersyl T. Biray as corresponding author, advanced internationally and made it into the pages of The Research Probe, Vol. 3, Issue 2 published on December 2023.

The article proved the social and psychological effects of humor as a teaching and learning strategy of language teachers to college students, and how and when teachers integrate humor into teaching.

Only recently, said article made it as among the Top 10 finalists during the International Research Competition (IRC) 2023, undergraduate category) organized by the Institute of Industry and Academic Research Incorporated (IIARI).

The Research Probe (TRP) is an open-access peer-reviewed proceedings publication of institutional conferences and research competitions focusing on four broad themes — education and development studies; humanities and social sciences; science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; and business, management, and accounting.

Noticeably, the research articles reported by the BSED English students have been consistently accepted and published in reputable international journals and publications in the last 2 years.

IIARI names Malonisio as EIC for int'l proceedings publication

Dr. Manuel O. Malonisio, Associate Professor V and International Affairs Chairperson of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) now serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Industry and Academic Research Review (IARR) of the Institute of Industry and Academic Research Inc. (IIARI) effective November 2023, with Dr. Anuradha Iddagoda from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, and Dr. Delon A. Ching from the Laguna State Polytechnic University, Philippines, as Associate Editors.

The IARR is an open-access peer-reviewed proceedings publication of the International Conference on Multidisciplinary Industry and Academic Research (ICMIAR), which is an annual event organized by IIARI.

Malonisio has served as Co-Chairperson in the recently concluded 2023 International Research Competition (IRC) by the IIARI, and had been one of the National Fellows of the same organization. Last year, he was selected as among the finalists in the search for IIARI International Luminary Award in Teaching.

The Aklan State University College of Teacher Education (ASU-CTE) is an active institutional partner of the IIARI since 2022, thus, the faculty members and students are actively involved in IIARI events organization and implementation.

PIA-6 honors Delgado as 2023 Best Performing School Paper Adviser; Ramos as Hall of Fame Awardee

Mr. Mark Jones M. Delgado, Ro Sueo Publication (RSP) adviser and instructor of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) received his first Best Performing School Paper Adviser award from the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region 6 - Western Visayas during the recognition program held at the Grand Xing Imperial Hotel, Iloilo City today, December 20, 2023.

This ceremony was part of the annual College Press Conference and Awards (COPRE) for the outstanding accomplishments of school paper student writers and advisers.

In a letter dated December 18, 2023 and addressed to Dr. Emily M. Arangote, SUC President III of the Aklan State University, EnP Cheryl B. Amor, Regional Head of PIA Western Visayas, extended her warm felicitations to the university for the productive partnership in advocating development journalism in the institution through campus publications. She also invited Mr. Delgado to join the esteemed roster of Best Performing School Paper Advisers for Western Visayas in fitting awards ceremony during the opening program of COPRE 2023.

Mr. Delgado has steered the RSP since 2021, and has been producing promising writers and winners in PIA-led workshops. It was under his mentorship that the RSP - official student publication of the CTE - has produced the university's first Mr. COPRE and Ms. COPRE 2nd Runner-up in 2022. His remarkable and sustainable community services, and promotion and emphasis of correct, concise, and complete information among his student writers have been key aspects on this recognition.

Meanwhile, Prof. Rhea M. Ramos, the winningest Eamigas publication adviser, and professor from the College of Business Management (CBM) received her 3rd Best Performing School Paper Adviser of Western Visayas award, and the lone Hall of Fame Awardee for Best Performing School Paper Adviser 2023.

BSED PhySci alumnus wins RDC/NEDA-6 outstanding volunteer award

Mr. Edson N. Solina, Bachelor of Secondary Education, major in Physical Science (BSED-PhySci) graduate in 2004, was recognized as one of the regional winners on the search for Outstanding Volunteers 2023 (Individual Adult Category) by the Regional Development Council (RDC) VI, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) VI, and the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSA) during the RDC VI 4th quarter meeting in Macau, China recently.

The regional awarding ceremony will be held in March 2024.

The search aimed to recognize outstanding and invaluable contributions and dedication of Filipino volunteers in nation-building and community development. Solina's exemplary performance in volunteerism is felt particularly during the COVID 19 pandemic where he led the learners' intervention assistance project for Libacaonon learners dubbed as "Inunga Ta, Amligan Ta". He also chaired other similar community projects, "Padayon" and "Pagkabaeaka". And, he is an active member of the Brotherhood Aklan Riders whose advocacy is "Riding for a Purpose: Weaving Together Hearts in Community Action". Their objective is to extend help to the indigent families, especially persons with medical needs.

Solina, who is currently employed as Senior High School Teacher II at the Libacao National Forestry Vocational High School, District of Libacao, serves as Senior High School District Coordinator, TESDA Accredited Competency Assessor for Housekeeping NC II, and Food and Beverage Services NC II.

He was a recipient of the International Award for Outstanding Research Management and Innovation in 2021, Asia's Golden Icons Award as Man of Achievements in the Field of Education and Research in 2022, and Gintong Parangal Award as Philippine Most Outstanding Leader in the Field of Education and Research in 2022.

He, too, was a national finalist for placing in the top 10 in the Pambansang Paligsahan ng Balagtasan 9th Sagisag Kultura ng Filipino Competition. In fact, Solina is a Regional Qualifier for the Civil Service Commission's Dangal ng Bayan Award 2023.

In the province of Aklan, Solina was semi-finalist in the search for Aklan's Ten Outstanding Mentors (ATOM) 2023, and a finalist for the Most Oustanding Aklanons (MOA) 2023.

In the District of Libacao, he ranked 2nd in the Guild of Outstanding Achievers and Leaders in Service (GOALS) Harvest of Excellence 2022, and District Innovator of the Year in 2021.
