PREVENT DRY EYES DURING THE DRY SEASON

Ask your ophthalmologist about lubricating eyedrops; also called artificial tears, these eyedrops are designed to lubricate dry eyes and help maintain moisture on the outer surface of your eyes. Try not to use a hair dryer, if possible. Protect your eyes from drying wind by wearing wraparound glasses outside.

Talk to your ophthalmologist about adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet for dry eye relief. They are found naturally in oily fish (such as salmon, sardines, tuna, trout, and anchovies), and in flaxseeds. Omega-3 fatty acids can be added as a dietary supplement (pill or tablet). Keep in mind that such supplements have no approved therapeutic claims.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

PREVENT SORE EYES THIS DRY SEASON

The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public about sore eyes, one of the common ailments during the dry months of summer. Here are some steps you can take to prevent sore eyes:

✅ Minimize exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during midday, to reduce the risk of contracting sore eyes and other seasonal illnesses.
Wear eyeglasses or sunglasses on windy days to protect your eyes from foreign particles.
✅ Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water. Minimize hand-to-eye contact.
✅ Use your own towels, eyedrops, makeup and sunglasses.
✅ Disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, counters, elevator buttons, and handrails with dilute bleach solution.
✅ Avoid crowded places.
✅ Wash clothes, towels, pillowcases, and anything else which may have come in contact with a person with sore eyes.

Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information about sore eyes prevention.

WAYS TO PREVENT DIABETIC EYE DISEASE

Diabetic eye disease refers to several eye problems that are all caused by diabetes. It includes diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataract, and glaucoma. Diabetic eye disease can be prevented by maintaining good blood sugar control through proper diet, regular exercise, and taking maintenance medications prescribed by your doctor. It’s also important to have periodic eye exams done by an ophthalmologist.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information about preventing and managing diabetic eye disease.

WHAT IS RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease in some premature babies born before 31 weeks. A full-term pregnancy is about 38 to 42 weeks. With ROP, abnormal blood vessels grow on the baby’s retina, which can cause serious eye and vision problems later. ROP may go away on its own as an infant grows. However, the growing infant should be seen by an ophthalmologist regularly. Sometimes, urgent treatment is needed to prevent blindness.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on ROP.

EYE HEALTH TIPS FOR ADULTS 40 TO 65

It’s very important to get a baseline comprehensive eye exam at age 40, even if you have no symptoms or known risk factors for eye disease. This is because early signs of disease and changes in vision often begin at age 40. In a comprehensive exam, your ophthalmologist will look for signs of cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.

If you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, you need to have annual eye exams and work with your doctor to control your weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. Your ophthalmologist will recommend follow-up exams based on your family history and the results of the baseline comprehensive eye exam.
