A UNIQUE COMMITMENT TO QUALITY – GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND REQUIREMENTS
Although some of the specifics in this article refer to regulations in the U.S., our attention to strict quality control applies in all markets. This information should be very useful for you in responding to questions about quality, manufacturing, and overall trust in the supplements you choose to use and give your family.
We have always emphasized that our products are manufactured according to standards modeled after pharmaceutical cGMPs (current good manufacturing practices). Additionally, one thing that makes us rather unique in the industry is our nearly 25 years of experience manufacturing our own tablets, allowing us oversight and control all the way through the process (which means we don't depend on an outside manufacturer to be honest with us. See link to “Dry Labbing” at the bottom of page). We have always gone above and beyond what is required to meet standards required for dietary supplements.
There are basically 3 sets of regulations that apply to foods, dietary supplements, and prescription drugs (with the latter being the most stringent).
The Food and Drug Administration requires that dietary supplement manufacturers follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for dietary supplements (21 CFR, part 111). USANA, however, voluntarily follows the more stringent GMP for pharmaceuticals (21 CFR, part 211) as the basis for its quality assurance program, which regulates virtually every aspect of manufacturing, including facility design and maintenance, raw material specification and control, supplier validation, product design and testing, and more.
Here are just a few of the ways that USANA meets and exceeds the dietary supplement requirements:
• USANA raw material supplier quality is reviewed by Quality Assurance before suppliers are approved to provide ingredients for use.
• USANA samples incoming raw materials in-house by a statistically sound sampling plan to ensure that our tests are representative of the entire lot of material received.
• USANA has a state-of-the-art laboratory on site where qualified scientists ensure the identity, purity and potency of each ingredient and finished product, as well as the absence of contamination.
• USANA has an extensive library of product records and standard operating procedures to ensure that quality is guaranteed for every batch.
USANA coordinates a robust stability program to ensure our products meet their label claims throughout product shelf life.
It isn't always possible to determine what another company is doing, but we could state with confidence that nobody does more to ensure quality than USANA. In addition, the quality and effectiveness of the products is not solely a matter of manufacturing quality. The actual formulations, balance, compatibility, stability, etc. are essential for a high-quality product. In other words, not only can poor quality manufacturing ruin a quality formulation, it is possible to make a very high quality tablet, with a formula or content that is incomplete or below average.
Finally, there is no standard or official definition for the term “pharmaceutical grade” in relation to dietary supplements. Definitions on the internet vary widely and are seldom very accurate. It is best to stick with wording such as “manufacturing modeled after pharmaceutical cGMPs” or something to that effect. For accuracy and consistency, it is best to use the official answers provided by Ask the Scientists, our Health and Science Education Facebook posts, or usana.com.
The video link provided below is an excellent introduction to our manufacturing facility and our philosophy on quality.

There are over 120 million photoreceptors in the eye.
80% of what we learn is through our eyes.
After the brain, our eyes are the most complex organ in our bodies.
There are over one million nerves that connect the eye to the brain.
Violet is the rarest eye color (the actress Elizabeth Taylor had violet eyes).
Bonus points for anyone that knows the name of the condition shown on the picture!

COQ10 SUPPLEMENTATION SUPPORTS HEALTHY GLYCEMIC CONTROL AND CHOLESTEROL LEVELS IN TYPE 2 DIABETICS
A clinical trial of adult type 2 diabetics found improved glycemic control and lower cholesterol levels among diabetics given Coenzyme Q10.
The blood glucose fluctuations that occur in diabetics increase potential free radical damage, which in turn may worsen diabetic complications. Since diabetics are often low in CoEnzyme Q10 levels, the research suggests that supplementation may help restore normal antioxidant defenses and protect pancreatic beta cells from excessive oxidative damage.
CoQ10 supplementation supports better glycemic control in type 2 diabetics
Why I no longer prescribe maintenance drugs and bypass surgery I will always remember the Monday morning that changed the course of my life. It was 8 a.m., and I was walking from the parking lot to my office in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where I had a thriving practice as a cardiologist. I felt pain in my chest and had to stop.
COENZYME Q10 SUPPLEMENTATION IMPROVES EJECTION FRACTION: A META-ANALYSIS
Congestive heart failure is a condition in which the heart's pumping power is weaker than normal, limiting the heart's ability to pump enough oxygen and nutrients to meet the body's needs. CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an antioxidant that has been used to help improve functional status during congestive heart failure (CHF).
In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers evaluated the effect of CoQ10 supplementation on ejection fraction (EF) and functional improvements of patients with CHF. Ejection fraction is a measurement of the percentage of blood leaving the heart each time it contracts.
When all studies were pooled, supplementation with CoQ10 resulted in improvements in ejection fraction, especially in studies longer than 12 weeks, dosages of at least 100 mg of CoQ10, and in subjects with mild to moderate CHF.

DIET AND NUTRITIONAL FACTORS IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES
Do you know anyone with an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or irritable bowel syndrome?
There is no single common diet suitable for all IBD patients; each of them is unique and dietary recommendations must be individually developed for each patient. However, what they do have in common is chronic inflammation and potential side effects from chronically used medications, putting them at risk for several nutritional deficiencies, including iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid, zinc, magnesium and vitamin A.
Not surprisingly, the role of diet and nutrition is often underestimated. The following paper is a very good review on nutritional influences in IBD that you can use as a basis for discussion with your doctor or health professional when determining dietary or supplemental program best suited to your individual needs.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Improve Arterial Flexibility
What is Arterial Stiffness?
Arterial stiffness is a general term for the elasticity in your arteries. Arterial stiffness may occur as a consequence of biological aging, inactivity, poor diet, smoking, and is also associated with certain diseases.
Long chain omega-3 fatty acids, primarily from fish oils, are associated with improved heart health, however a specific link between omage-3 intake and arterial stiffness had not been made until recently.
Did you know that a severe niacin (vitamin B3) deficiency results in what we call the 4 D's – dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death?
It is also fascinating, and very sad, that until a few decades ago, many people stuck in insane asylums were simply deficient in niacin because their nutrient related dementia was mistaken for mental disorders. We take our current food availability and benefits of great nutrition for granted too often, in my opinion.
It is true that in modern society we seldom see very severe and outright nutrient deficiencies. Our current dilemma is dealing with long-term, chronic insufficiency that often reduce the quality of life and may lead to both known and unknown consequences. But, understanding the history of vitamins shows just how powerful and important these micro-nutrients are to life, but also illustrate some very interesting and complex science and detective work.
This is a short, but very interesting compilation of the history of the most common nutrient deficiencies and how the vitamins were discovered. Pellagra, the deficiency of vitamin B3 or niacin, is found about half way down the page.
If you take the time to read the page, I promise you will learn something new and interesting.
