The Aroy Mak Story

Aroy Mak (“very delicious” in Thai) traces its origins to the streets of Bangkok, where Bing Concepcion was inspired by the robust culinary tradition of the city. She found home in the vibrant feast that is Thai street food, with the cuisine’s creative use of only the freshest produce. Bangkok’s food hawkers also take pride in their wide array of herb-and-spice tea concoctions – crafted beverages to share over lingering conversations with friends, after a quick, filling snack of pad thai. Most impressive of all, these dishes and drinks, prepared right on the streets, come at pocket-friendly price points. This left Bing determined: Filipinos deserve the same quality and affordable, authentic Bangkok streetfood experience.

The pilot Aroy Mak kiosk was set up in the POEA Building cafeteria in 2016. But having surveyed a more promising market, Bing moved her business to the canteen of the UP College of Social Work and Community Development. Her most loyal patrons were initially students and faculty of CSWCD and adjacent offices. It did not take too long for word to spread that there was a (then)PhP60-peso Thai milk tea, brewed from leaves, as ordered, and not to be missed is the Aroy Mak pad thai, cooked in minutes, all making for a winning combo to be enjoyed by students on a quick break. Soon, Aroy Mak welcomed diners from other offices in the area, and even curious food enthusiasts from outside the UP Campus.

Aroy Mak was invited to other venues, the most successful venture of which is Aroy Mak’s pop-up in DLSU Taft grounds during weeklong University festivities. The steady expansion of Aroy Mak has connected Bing with like-minded food and culture enthusiasts. At the same time, this growth has allowed her to provide equitable wages to her team of food attendants whom she fondly calls Aroy Mak’s Angels.

Aroy Mak is exploring opportunities for social entrepreneurship like subsidized meals for less-privileged students as well as linkages with produce suppliers from nearby communities. Relationships are being built with partners who can deliver the Aroy Mak experience to a wider customer base. With this promise of growth, Bing stays committed to maintaining the affordability and quality that every cup of Aroy Mak tea or every Aroy Mak box of pad thai has come to be known for.
