The Department of Science and Technology Region 7 (DOST-7) and the Central Visayas Consortium for Health Research and Development (CVCHRD) hosted the Brain and Mental Health Research & Development (R&D) Clinic of the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) on October 22, 2024, at the DOST-7 Elena O. Diola Memorial Hall.

The R&D Clinic provided guidance for Central Visayas researchers in brain, neuroscience, and mental health fields on accessing funding opportunities through DOST-PCHRD’s Brain and Mental Health Research and Development (BMH R&D) Program.

In a major initiative for advancing neuroscience in the Philippines, DOST-PCHRD also launched the Philippine Brain Research Agenda (PBRA) 2024-2028.

This comprehensive roadmap prioritizes essential areas in brain health research, including molecular neuroscience, neurological condition epidemiology, and the application of advanced technologies like AI and bioinformatics.

The PBRA was developed collaboratively with contributions from national agencies, academic institutions, and healthcare experts, and aligns with the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA).

The PBRA supports researchers and healthcare professionals in enhancing the Philippine health system's capacity, promoting brain health, and reducing health disparities.

Senior Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) managers from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Visayas Cluster completed an impactful benchmarking visit to Taiwan from October 21 to 25, designed to enhance their expertise in blue economy and smart community initiatives.

The delegation, comprising DOST leaders from Regions VI, VII, and VIII, engaged with Taiwan's top research and government institutions, including the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), National Central University, Institute for Information Industry, Kaohsiung City Government, Ocean Affairs Council, and National Sun Yat-sen University.

The STI managers gained firsthand insights into Taiwan's advanced approaches to sustainable marine resource management, smart urban technologies, and successful public-private collaboration models.

They explored Taiwan's data-driven governance frameworks, applications of artificial intelligence in urban planning, and innovative blue economy practices focused on aquaculture, marine conservation, and sustainable fisheries.

Key lessons from the visit include Taiwan’s emphasis on industry collaboration, community-centered innovation, and interdisciplinary research—strategies that will guide the Visayas Cluster’s STI managers in developing re-entry plans to strengthen local programs.

These plans aim to drive sustainable development in blue economy sectors and create resilient, tech-enabled communities across the Visayas region.

This international collaboration underscores DOST’s commitment to adopting global best practices and empowering STI managers to lead regional development and innovation in the Philippines.

The DOST 7 Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its first surveillance assessment with a special assessment for ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation.

The assessment, conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry - Philippine Accreditation Bureau (DTI-PAB), focused on the laboratory's Microbiology and Chemistry sections.

The Microbiology section has successfully maintained its scope of accreditation, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to providing accurate and reliable testing services. The assessment highlighted the laboratory's dedication to quality assurance practices and adherence to international standards.

The Chemistry section has also successfully maintained its scope of accreditation, with additional scopes added. The assessment also recommended new applicants for accreditation, further highlighting the section's commitment to expanding its capabilities and services.

DOST 7 RSTL remains committed to continuous improvement and upholding the highest standards of quality and technical competence. The laboratory values the feedback received during the assessment and views it as an opportunity to further enhance its services.
